Parental attitude and role perception in families of asthmatic children.

The attitude of the parents of 30 asthmatic children, was studied in four subjects: 1) Parental behavior, 2) modes of coping with every day events, 3) parent-child communication, and 4) anxiety and fears towards the child's health. The following situations were observed: The parents of asthmatic children showed a higher level of anxiety towards the health of the children in comparison with parents in control group (p less than 0.01). The coping modes of Israeli born parents scored higher than parents born in North Africa or Asia. Parents from other countries scored the lowest of the three (p = 0.004). The behavior pattern of parents of children with mild asthma was more controlled than parents of children with severe asthma (p less than 0.05). Chronic and prolonged asthma cause a decrease in communication between the parents and child (P less than 0.05). The number of children in the family has a direct effect upon the degree of the parent's anxiety towards the child's health. Parents who have 1-2 children, one of which is asthmatic, were found to be more anxious than parents with 3-4 children. The above mentioned data influence the parental behavior, which was better when the first or second child was asthmatic than if he was the third or fourth child in the family. Coping with chronic disease of the asthmatic child should include medical and behavioral education of his parents by the medical and paramedical staff in the hospital and in the respiratory clinic.

The correlation between low birth weight and learning traits in senior school pupils--a retrospective survey.

The purpose of this study was to establish whether a correlation exists between childrens birth weight and their scholastic achievements in high school. This correlation has previously only been investigated only in primary school children and it was felt that it would be interesting to observe whether schooling changed the known status. The records of 718 children were reviewed and there appears to be a statistically significant disability for low birth weight children in the study of exact sciences and foreign languages whilst no significant differences were noted in the humanities and sport.

An assessment of asthmatic knowledge of school teachers.

A group of 69 teachers in two high schools in Holon were asked to fill out questionnaires measuring their general knowledge about asthma as well as their specific awareness of the asthmatic pupils in their class. The source of their knowledge comes from reading popular articles in newspapers and periodicals as well as popular scientific books (43.5%); and later from discussions with physicians and nurses (15.5%). The knowledge of the class teachers was compared with that of various single subject teachers. The importance of the teachers' knowledge is emphasized as well as its effect upon the pupils. Practical ways to increase that knowledge are suggested and discussed.

[Self-image of asthmatic children expressed in their drawings].

Chronic asthma has an obligatory influence on the emotional state of children with this disease. The disease has psychosomatic components and stress can be the principal cause of the attacks of dyspnea. 50 asthmatic children, 8-14 years of age, were examined and their drawings were compared with those of 20 control children. The drawings of 60% of the asthmatic children were interpreted as showing that they regarded themselves as ill and that they underestimate their self-image. Half of the group use the disease for secondary gain from their peers, and especially from their parents. The rest feel themselves to be healthy without restriction in their daily lives. The prognosis for asthmatic attacks in this group is good.

The importance of inhalation of beta 2 sympathomimetic drugs in the home care treatment of asthma in children.

In order to improve the care of asthma attacks in children and to reduce hospitalization, 50 patients and their parents were taught a home program using beta 2 sympathomimetic drugs administered by aerosol inhaler. The parents obtained recordings of respiratory rate and pulmonary flow meter. A control group of 50 patients received only slow-release theophylline. Inhalation therapy improved the respiration recorded by reduced respiratory rate and pulmonary flow meter while visits to the emergency department and hospital admissions were reduced by 60%. Absence from school was also reduced by 60%. Benefits to the patient and to cost containment have been achieved by home care treatment.

Vitamin A in Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

A 9-year-old boy was admitted to the Pediatric Department with high fever, severe photophobia, and a rash on his face, eyelids, and neck. Two days before admission he received injections of penicillin. During the night his general condition worsened, and his fever rose to 40 degrees C. He began to hallucinate, and clear fluid-filled blisters appeared on his skin and mouth. Severe photophobic epiphora, conjunctival injection, and punctate keratitis were also observed. Several hours after local administration of corticosteroids and antibiotic eye drops, his eyelids swelled severely, the corneas became covered by pseudomembranes, and later, in attempting to open the eyelids, the skin peeled off and the eye lashes fell out. Treatment consisted of artificial tear eye drops, and intravenous antibiotics and steroids. His condition improved gradually, visual acuity became 6/15 in both eyes, and a superficial punctate staining of the cornea was observed. The Schirimer test showed lacrimal hyposecretion. A tarsal conjunctival biopsy showed a complete absence of goblet cells. Vitamin A was administered topically and systemically. After three months of treatment with Vitamin A, tear secretion was almost normal, and conjunctival biopsy indicated a regeneration of goblet cells.
