Establishment of a variant cell clone growing at 41 degrees C from embryonic rat and tupaia (tree shrew) fibroblast cells.

Rat and tupaia 41 degrees C temperature variant cell clones were derived from parental embryonic cells, cloned and established in tissue cultures. Both variant cell clones grew permanently at 41 degrees C. The morphology of these cell clones was altered in comparison to the original fibroblast cell clones. The cell biological characterization of the rat and tupaia 41 degrees C temperature variant cell clones showed that both cell clones were stable. After abolishing the selection pressure (incubation at 41 degrees C) for more than 10 further cell passages by incubation at 37 degrees C and then raising the temperature again to 41 degrees C, neither of the cell clones lost their newly acquired property of growing at 41 degrees C. This fact demonstrates that the newly acquired property is certain to be genetically manifest in both cell clones. The modal number of chromosomes of the rat 41 degrees C temperature variant cell clone was increased, and in the case of the tupaia variant cell clone, bimodality was observed. The plating efficiency of both cell clones did not rise significantly in comparison to the parental cells. Neither of the 41 degrees C temperature variant cell clones grew in semi-solid medium.

[The catecholaminergic connections of the visual system of the albino rat (author's transl)].

By using the glyoxylic acid method of DE LA Torre and Surgeon (1976), occurrence, distribution and origin of catecholamines were investigated in the visual system of the albino rat. A dense network of green fluorescent terminals and preterminals could be detected in the dLGN. The spreading of terminals of catecholaminergic fibres had been observed in laminae I and II of the visual cortex. Investigation of lamina I with the Golgi-Kopsch method showed axons the thickness of which was below 1 micron, and with varicosities with a distance of approximately 3.5 micron, having a diameter of 2 to 4 micron. These axons might be identical with the fluorescent-histochemically represented terminals. Taking into account the course of catecholaminergic axons it can be concluded that the pyramidal cells of the neocortex, the spiny dendrites of which are heavily branched in the lamina I, are affected. After application of horseradish-peroxidase in the dLGN labelled cells have been found in the locus coeruleus (A6) only. After application of the enzyme in the visual cortex, labelled cells have been observed in the nuclei A 6 and A2. The pathway of catecholaminergic axons from the nucleus of origin to the terminal regions was investigated using the "false transmitter" 6-OH-DA. The results can be seen in a diagram.

[Distribution of species of Moraxella and moraxella-like organisms in the nasopharynx of healthy human adults (author's transl].

By means of a lincomycin containing selective medium, gram-negative, oxidase-positive, non-motile, non-saccharolytic, penicillin-sensitive rods have been isolated from 24 of 165 healthy adults (13,9%). Three strains were lost, 7 strains were Moraxella osloensis (4,2%), 12 strains were Neisseria elongata (7,3%) and 2 strains were considered to be a subspecies of N. elongata (1.2%). By agglutination and immunodiffusion could be demonstrated that N. elongata is a serologically heterogenous species. The nasopharynx seems to represent the natural habitat of M. osloensis and N. elongata.

[Group Y meningococci as respiratory pathogens (author's transl)].

Serogroup Y meningococci are more frequently respiratory pathogens than one might suppose from their prevalence in meningitis and septicemia. A case of a peracute fatal septicemia caused by group Y meningococci is reported here in which post mortem hemorrhagic lesions of the pharyngeal, laryngeal and tracheal mucosae as well as a beginning pneumonia and pleurisy have been found. The association of meningococcal and respiratory viral infections is discussed.

[Endocarditis lenta caused by Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salicinicus (author's transl)].

After two tooth extractions performed without antibiotic cover endocarditis lenta occurred in a ten-year-old girl. The causative organism isolated was Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salicinicus, the first such reported case. The child has a small, haemodynamically insignificant, ventricular septal defect. A cure was achieved after long-term administration of penicillin G in high doses, at first combined with ampicillin. There were no complications.

[Some properties of carrier strains of Listeria monocytogenes (author's transl)].

About 60 characteristics have been investigated in 7 hemolyzing and 12 nonhemolyzing strains of L. monocytogenes. From these investigations resulted inter alia that the organism grows well under strictly anaerobic conditions, esculin is split at 45 degrees C,NH3 is produced from peptone, but not from arginin, and H2S can be traced by sufficiently sensitive methods. All strains possess a lipase, muramidase, and deoxyribonuclease, the hemolytic ones only also a lecithinase. Besides, the hemolytic strains only dispose of experimental virulence and of a CAMP factor-like agent. The experimental animal of choice seems to be the conjunctivally infected guinea pig in which a generalized infection develops.

[The rate of healthy carriers of Listeria monocytogenes].

The feces of 318 healthy adults were examined for L. monocytogenes by means of the cold enrichment and of two different selective media (nalidixic acid-trypaflavin-serum agar; Braveny medium). 15 persons (4.7 percent) proved to be carriers. Three of the 15 strains only caused hemolysis on sheep blood agar and belonged to serotypes 1/2b, 1/2c and 3c. The nonhemolytic strains without exception belonged to serotypes 4f and 4g. The Braveny medium proved to be superior to the nalidixic acid-trypaflavin-serum agar for isolating L. monocytogenes from feces.

[How fastidious are the so-called non-fastidious neisseriae? (AUTHOR'S TRANSL)].

75 strains of all the so-called non-fastidious Neisseria species were examined for their ability to grow on blood and nutrient agar at temperatures between 22 degrees C and 45 degrees C. The result was that only Neisseria mucosa var. mucosa, N. catarrhalis, N. ovis and N. canis grow sufficiently on nutrient agar at 22 degrees C. N. lactamica has an even narrower range of of growth (30-37 degrees C) than meningococci. Therefore, the statement in Bergey's Mnaual that the saprophytic neisseriae can be separated from the pathogenic species by their minor needs for temperature and media should be corrected.

[Columnar organization of pyramidal cells of the visual cortex in the albino rat].

1. The arrangement of the pyramidal cells of the visual cortex has been investigated by light and electron microscopy in 36 albino rats. 2. It was shown, that the apical dendrites form bundles. The number of dendrites per bundle is about 5 in the lower lamina Vb and 7.5 in the upper lamina Va, the diameter of bundles is about 25.7 mum. The average distance between the centers of bundles is 76,4 mum, and between the peripheries 53.1 mum. 3. The results are compared with physiological and morphological findings. It was shown, that there is an agreement of diameter of bundles und their lateral branching dendrites with diameters of columns of cells and of terminal branchings of specific afferents. 4. The morphological results are graphically reconstructed.
