Parallel three-step phase-shifting digital holography.

We propose parallel three-step phase-shifting digital holography as a technique capable of noiseless instantaneous measurement of three-dimensional objects based on phase-shifting interferometry. The proposed digital holography carries out three-step phase shifting at the same time by using a phase-shifting array device located in the reference beam. The array device has a periodic three-step phase distribution, and its configuration is simplified compared with that required for conventional parallel phase-shifting digital holography. Therefore the optical system of the proposed parallel phase-shifting digital holography is more suitable for the realization of the proposed holography. We conduct both a numerical simulation and a preliminary experiment. The results of the simulation and experiment agree well with those of the conventional phase-shifting method and are superior to the results obtained by conventional digital holography by using the Fresnel transform alone. Thus the effectiveness of the proposed technique is verified.

Scheme to improve the reconstructed image in parallel quasi-phase-shifting digital holography.

We propose a scheme to improve the reconstructed image in parallel quasi-phase-shifting digital holography. Parallel quasi-phase-shifting digital holography is a technique capable of noiseless instantaneous measurement of three-dimensional objects, and it implements four kinds of phase shifting at a time with an array of 2 x 2 phase-shifting devices located in the reference wave. In the phase-shifting calculation in the reconstruction process of the technique, the scheme assigns the 2 x 2 cell configuration for each pixel in the vertical direction and for each 1-pixel interval in the horizontal direction of the hologram recorded by the image sensor. We conduct both a numerical simulation and a preliminary experiment. The results show that the proposed scheme can improve the quality of the reconstructed image calculated by the conventional scheme of parallel quasi-phase-shifting digital holography we previously proposed, and then the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified.

Dependence of reconstructed image characteristics on the observation condition in light-in-flight recording by holography.

We analyze the dependence of the reconstructed image characteristic on the observation condition in the light-in-flight recording by holography both theoretically and experimentally. This holography makes it possible to record a propagating light pulse. We have found that the shape of the reconstructed image is changed when the observation position is vertically moved along the hologram plane. The reconstructed image is numerically simulated on the basis of the theory and is experimentally obtained by using a 373 fs pulsed laser. The numerical results agree with the experimental result, and the validity of the theory is verified. Also, experimental results are analyzed and the restoration of the reconstructed image is discussed.

Optimum holographic optical element lens recorded by visible laser beams for an infrared two-dimensional vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array.

We have designed an optimum holographic optical element (HOE) lens recorded by visible laser beams for an infrared two-dimensional vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array. The hologram computer-aided design tool that we have developed is used for the optimum design. The optimum HOE has both high light efficiency and a small amount of aberration. An Nd:YAG laser operated at 532 nm and an 8 x 8 VCSEL array operated at 850 nm are used for HOE recording and reconstruction, respectively. The designed lens is experimentally demonstrated, and the experimental results of the lens almost agree with the numerical results.

Analysis and evaluations of logical instructions called in parallel digital optical operations based on optical array logic.

The authors have analysed and evaluated a two-dimensional instruction set of parallel operation based on optical array logic (OAL), which is a digital optical computing paradigm, to clarify efficient composition of an optical computing system based on OAL. To evaluate parallel operation based on OAL, the author have introduced new indices and evaluated a logical instruction set of various parallel operations with the indices, so that a guideline for composing a simple and efficient OAL computing system is clarified. Also, the authors have proposed the reduced operation kernel set correlation technique to perform parallel operations more efficiently by a simple OAL computing system. It has been clarified that the technique can reduce the required hardware necessary for an OAL computing system for efficient general-purpose processing.

Analysis of p53 mutations and Helicobacter pylori infection in human and animal models.

BACKGROUND: p53 gene mutations are believed to play a critical role in the development of gastric carcinoma. We examined the relation between Helicobacter pylori infection and p53 gene mutations of the gastric mucosa in human and animal models. METHODS: To detect the original p53 DNA sequences of the Japanese monkey and Mongolian gerbil, the p53 genes of these animals were amplified using the nested polymerase chain reaction method with primers for the human p53 gene. Direct DNA sequencing of exons 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the p53 genes was performed by the dideoxy terminator method for gastric mucosa of humans, the Japanese monkey, and the Mongolian gerbil. The expression of p53 was examined immunohistochemically in a Japanese monkey model. RESULTS: Mutations of the p53 gene were identified in 52.4% of human H. pylori-positive mucosa and in 100% of monkey H. pylori-positive mucosa. However, no mutations of the p53 gene were found in the H. pylori-positive gastric mucosa of Mongolian gerbils. There were no mutations in H. pylori-negative gastritis mucosa of humans, monkeys, or Mongolian gerbils. Nuclear staining of p53 was seen in the glandular cells of the H. pylori-infected mucosa of Japanese monkeys, especially in the neck region of the glands. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that the H. pylori infection can induce p53 point mutations in humans and the Japanese monkey and appear to be involved in the pathway leading to dysplasia or carcinoma. However, our direct DNA sequencing method showed no p53 mutations in the Mongolian gerbil model at present. Further studies with this model are needed.
