Drugs or no drugs?
Guidelines for the treatment and management of depression in primary and secondary care have been available for more than a year. Yet anecdotal evidence suggests their implementation is patchy. Treatment should be tailored to the severity of the depression. Psychological treatments can be used alone or in combination with antidepressants, depending on the illness severity. Prescribers and patients should be aware of the side effects of the drugs.

Making sense of psychosis. Part 3. Schizophrenia: care for the 21st century.
Mental health nurses have had to come to terms with rapid developments in the psychological, social and pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia in recent years. This article aims to outline some of these developments, first by considering the growth in what are known as psychosocial interventions and second by reviewing the current status of antipsychotic medication. The principles and efficacy of these two aspects of treatment are discussed.
