Georgia hospital wins McGaw Prize for excellence in community service. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital cited for building coalitions.

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Health System, Albany, Ga., has been awarded the Foster G. McGaw Prize for excellence in community service. The award is sponsored by the American Hospital Association, The Baxter International Foundation and the Cardinal Health Foundation. This story contains examples of how the $100,000 award will be used for Phoebe's ongoing work in building coalitions in its community.

Hospital hooks FISH! Philosophy. Treatment, visits at Silver Cross become more pleasant experiences.

FISH! Philosophy at Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet, Ill., is designed to make the hospital experience pleasant, and even fun for patients, visitors and employees. Outpatient satisfaction was the first objective in the campaign, which was first introduced to hospital staff last year through a two-hour training session. The program's four main principles are: Be There; Choose Your Attitude; Play, and Make Their Day.

Television spots win national award. Part of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center's branding effort.

"Miracles in Medicine," a series of award-winning television spots, was produced for OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Ill., by The Roberts Group, Inc., Waukesha, Wis. They are an integral part of a broader branding campaign, launched in May 2003, that includes newspaper, radio, and outdoor elements. The spots were deemed so successful, the branding effort was expanded to include Children's Hospital of Illinois.

Baldrige Award cites two hospitals. Baptist, Saint Luke's hospitals honored for quality, performance.

Baptist Hospital Inc., Pensacola, Fla.; and Saint Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., have received the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the category of healthcare. Named for a former secretary of commerce, the award recognizes efficiency, effectiveness and excellence. The two hospitals are among only seven companies in the U.S. to be so recognized this year.

King's Daughters Medical Center web site is an award winner.

King's Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Ky., has an award-winning web site, www.kdmc.com, that attracts an average of 24,000 visits a month. Designed to be user-friendly and informative. The web site for the 366-bed regional referral center uses a newspaper-like style that makes it easily to update.

Anne Arundel opens world's first See and Treat Cancer Center.

Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC), Annapolis, Md., is promoting he world's first See and Treat Cancer Care Center of Excellence at The DeCesaris Cancer Institute. The system uses medical imaging equipment from GE Healthcare and radiation therapy technologies from Varian Medical Systems.

Medical group forges information link with television station web site.

Methodist Medical Group, Peoria, Ill, has entered into an interesting partnership with the local WEEK-TV to provide timely informative health related information. Through the WEEK web site, members of the public have access to a variety of locally produced health related articles by clicking on the MedWatch tab at www.week.com. Viewers can request specific topics of interest by e-mail.

Press kit kicks off new branding.

A smartly produced press kit resulted in unprecedented news coverage when Denver's Porter Adventist Hospital recently unveiled plans for an extensive 80 million dollars redevelopment. A news conference was held to announce this plan, along with the opening of the hospital's new emergency department. The overall effort is part of the new branding strategy of the 75-year-old hospital.

M.D. Anderson, Ball cancer centers focus on research, care, prevention.

The folks at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, win first place in this category with their traditionally excellent report. The Cancer Center at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Ind., receives the second place award with a report that uses unusual design elements to "shatter the myths" about cancer research.
