Self-assembled graphitic nanotubes with one-handed helical arrays of a chiral amphiphilic molecular graphene.

Self-assembly of a Gemini-shaped, chiral amphiphilic hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene having two chiral oxyalkylene side chains, along with two lipophilic side chains, yields graphitic nanotubes with one-handed helical chirality. The nanotubes are characterized by an extremely high aspect ratio of >1,000 and have a uniform diameter of 20 nm and a wall thickness of 3 nm. The nanotubes with right- and left-handed helical senses were obtained from the (S)- and (R)-enantiomers of the amphiphile, respectively, due to an efficient translation of point chirality into supramolecular helical chirality. The (S)- and (R)-enantiomers coassemble at varying mole ratios to give nanotubes, whose circular dichroism profiles are almost unchanged over a wide range of the enantiomeric excess of the amphiphile (100-20%). The high level of chirality amplification thus observed indicates a long-range cooperativity in the self-assembling process. In sharp contrast, a hexabenzocoronene amphiphile with chiral lipophilic side chains did not form nanotubular assemblies. The present work demonstrates the majority rule in noncovalent systems and also may provide a synthetic strategy toward realization of molecular solenoids.

Energy funneling of IR photons captured by dendritic antennae and acceptor mode specificity: anti-stokes resonance raman studies on iron(III) porphyrin complexes with a poly(aryl ether) dendrimer framework.

A series of poly(aryl ether) dendrimer chloroiron(III) porphyrin complexes (LnTPP)Fe(III)Cl (number of aryl layers [n]=3 to 5) were synthesized, and their Boltzmann temperatures under IR irradiation were evaluated from ratios of Stokes to anti-Stokes intensities of resonance Raman bands. While the Boltzmann temperature of neat solvent was unaltered by IR irradiation (LnTPP)Fe(III)Cl (n=3 to 5), all showed a temperature rise that was larger than that of the solvent and greater as the dendrimer framework was larger. Among vibrational modes of the metalloporphyrin core, the temperature rise of an axial Fe-Cl stretching mode at 355 cm-1 was larger than that for a porphyrin in-plane mode at 390 cm-1. Although most of the IR energy is captured by the phenyl nu8 mode at 1597 cm-1 of the dendrimer framework, an anti-Stokes Raman band of the phenyl nu8 mode was not detected, suggesting the extremely fast vibrational relaxation of the phenyl mode. From these observations, it is proposed that the energy of IR photons captured by the aryl dendrimer framework is transferred to the axial Fe-Cl bond of the iron porphyrin core and then relaxed to the porphyrin macrocycle.

Rewritable phosphorescent paper by the control of competing kinetic and thermodynamic self-assembling events.

Security inks have become of increasing importance. They are composed of invisible substances that provide printed images that are not able to be photocopied, and are readable only under special environments. Here we report a novel photoluminescent ink for rewritable media that dichroically emits phosphorescence due to a structural bistability of the self-assembled luminophor. Long-lasting images have been developed by using conventional thermal printers, which are readable only on exposure to ultraviolet light, and more importantly, are thermally erasable for rewriting. Although thermally rewritable printing media have already been developed using visible dyes and cholesteric liquid crystals, security inks that allow rewriting of invisible printed images are unprecedented. We realized this unique feature by the control of kinetic and thermodynamic processes that compete with one another in the self-assembly of the luminophor. This strategy can provide an important step towards the next-generation security technology for information handling.

Controlled self-assembly triggered by olefin metathesis: cross-linked graphitic nanotubes from an amphiphilic hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene.

Acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) in CH2Cl2 of a Gemini-shaped nonionic hexabenzocoronene amphiphile (2), bearing triethylene glycol chains with terminal allylic functionalities, resulted in spontaneous formation of graphitic nanotubes with a cross-linked surface. Without ADMET, 2 did not self-assemble to form a tubular structure due to a high solubility in CH2Cl2. Although 2 formed nanotubes in THF, ADMET on the surface of the preformed nanotubes in THF proceeded only sluggishly and resulted in partial disruption of the tubular structure. The cross-linked nanotubes showed a softening temperature (244 degrees C) higher than that of the uncross-linked version (195 degrees C) and preserved their hollow structure much longer upon heating.

Cooperativity in chiroptical sensing with dendritic zinc porphyrins.

Zinc porphyrin-appended dendrimers, 12PZn, 18PZn, 24PZn, and 36PZn, containing 12, 18, 24, and 36 zinc porphyrin units, respectively, were synthesized using zinc porphyrin dyad (2PZn) and triad (3PZn) as precursors. Although these dye-functionalized dendrimers all serve as chiroptical sensors for an asymmetric bipyridine (RR- and SS-Py2), the sensing capability is highly dependent on the structure of the dendritic scaffold. 2PZn, which is chiroptically silent toward Py2, turns cooperative and displays a large ICD (induced circular dichroism) response in the visible region when incorporated into 12PZn. Judging from the extents of contribution of each zinc porphyrin unit to the CD amplitudes ([Deltaepsilonmax]), the cooperativity in 24PZn (112 M-1 cm-1) is lower than that in 12PZn (196 M-1 cm-1) and much lower in dendron 4PZn (59 M-1 cm-1). In contrast, 3PZn, which is ICD-active toward Py2, hardly shows such an enhanced cooperativity when incorporated into 18PZn and 36PZn and dendron 6PZn, as well. Absorption spectroscopy suggests some unique conformational characteristics of the zinc porphyrin units in highly cooperative 12PZn.

Spin-crossover dendrimers: generation number-dependent cooperativity for thermal spin transition.

Poly(benzyl ether) dendrons having a focal triazole unit (Gntrz: trz = triazole; n = generation number = 0-2) were found to react with (MeSO(3))(2)Fe to form dendritic coordination polymers ([Fe(Gntrz)(3)](MeSO(3))(2).2H(2)O) that undergo the thermal spin transition. When the generation number of the dendritic unit was larger (n = 0 --> 1 --> 2), the average degree of polymerization (D(p) = 20 --> 10 --> 3) and spin-crossover temperature (T(c) = 335 --> 315 --> 300 K) of the resulting polymer were lower. However, the abruptness of the spin transition was not monotonically dependent on the generation number; (G1trz)Fe exhibited an abrupt spin transition with a temperature width of only 10 K, while the smallest and largest members of the (Gntrz)Fe family both displayed a rather broad spin-transition temperature width (30 (n = 0) and 50 K (n = 2)). X-ray diffraction and calorimetric analyses indicated the presence of a discotic columnar core-shell assembly with a crystal lattice best occupied by a C(3)(v)() symmetric array of medium-sized (G1trz)Fe.

Phosphorescent organogels via "metallophilic" interactions for reversible RGB-color switching.

A trinuclear Au(I) pyrazolate complex bearing long alkyl chains (1) in hexane self-assembles via a Au(I)-Au(I) metallophilic interaction, to form a red-luminescent organogel (lambda(em) = 640 nm, lambda(ext) = 284 nm). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of an air-dried gel with 1 show the presence of heavily entangled fibers, each consisting of a rectangularly packed columnar assembly of 1. Doping of the organogel with a small amount of Ag(+) results in a blue luminescence (lambda(em) = 458 nm, lambda(ext) = 370 nm) without disruption of the gel, while removal of doped Ag(+) with cetyltrimethylammonium chloride results in complete recovery of the original red-luminescent gel. Upon heating, these organogels undergo gel-to-sol transition due to the destabilization of the metallophilic interactions, where the red luminescence of the nondoped system becomes hardly visible, while the blue luminescence of the Ag(+)-doped system turns green (lambda(em) = 501 nm, lambda(ext) = 370 nm). On cooling, these solutions undergo gelation and synchronously recover the original luminescences. The observed RGB (red-green-blue) luminescences are all long-lived (3-6 micros) and assigned to electronic transitions from triplet-excited states.

Nanotechnology-based photodynamic therapy for neovascular disease using a supramolecular nanocarrier loaded with a dendritic photosensitizer.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was evaluated using a supramolecular nanomedical device, that is, a novel dendritic photosensitizer (DP) encapsulated by a polymeric micelle formulation. The characteristic dendritic structure of the DP prevents aggregation of its core sensitizer, thereby inducing a highly effective photochemical reaction. With its highly selective accumulation on choroidal neovascularization (CNV) lesions, this treatment resulted in a remarkably efficacious CNV occlusion with minimal unfavorable phototoxicity.

Photosensitized hydrogen evolution from water using conjugated polymers wrapped in dendrimeric electrolytes.

High-efficiency light-driven hydrogen evolution from water was demonstrated by using poly(phenyleneethynylene) bearing negatively charged, [G3] poly(benzyl ether) dendrimeric side groups 3(L4) as photosensitizer. Three-dimensional wrapping of the conjugated backbone suppressed self-quenching of the photoexcited state, while methyl viologen (MV(2+)), a positively charged electron acceptor, was trapped on its negatively charged surface, to form a spatially separated donor-acceptor supramolecular complex. Studies with time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the quenching rate constant (k(q) = 1.2 x 10(15) M(-1) s(-1)) is much greater than diffusion control rate constants. Upon excitation of 3(L4) in the presence of a mixture of MV(2+), triethanolamine (TEOA; sacrificial electron donor), and a colloidal PVA-Pt, hydrogen evolution took place with an overall efficiency of 13%, 1 order of magnitude better than precedent examples. Comparative studies with several reference sensitizers showed that spatial isolation of the conjugated backbone and its long-range pi-electronic conjugation, along with electrostatic interactions on the exterior surface, play important roles in achieving the efficient photosensitized water reduction.
