Erectile function following external beam radiotherapy for clinically organ-confined or locally advanced prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: External beam radiotherapy (XRT) has been a standard treatment for clinically localized prostate cancer. However, preservation of erectile function following XRT is controversial. In this study, the influence of XRT on erectile function of patients with clinically organ-confined or locally advanced prostate cancer was retrospectively evaluated. METHODS: The study included 34 of 84 patients with organ-confined or locally advanced prostate cancer who underwent XRT between 1995 and 2002. Erectile function following radiotherapy was assessed by a simple mailed questionnaire that was constructed for the study. To determine the predictive factors for erectile dysfunction following radiotherapy, data were analyzed by multivariate analysis with the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: The modality of XRT was the only factor to independently predict erectile dysfunction following XRT. The maintenance rates of erectile function were 47.6% at 1 year and 19% at 3 years in patients who received the 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, which were significantly higher than in those who received conventional radiotherapy (P = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS: XRT significantly reduced the maintenance rate of erectile function during the follow-up period, with the rate being 19% at 3 years in patients who received 3-dimensional conformal radiation. The XRT modality was involved in the reduction of erectile function. These results suggest that erectile dysfunction is a possible adverse event following XRT.

Early and late complications of radical retropubic prostatectomy: experience in a single institution.

BACKGROUND: Radical retropubic prostatectomy is one of the first-line treatments for clinically organ-confined prostatic cancer. However, some studies have reported the morbidity of this procedure. We retrospectively assessed the incidence of complications of radical retropubic prostatectomy in our institution. METHODS: We reviewed 123 consecutive medical charts of prostate cancer patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy between 1988 and 2001 at our institution. We evaluated intraoperative complications, early complications within 1 month postoperatively, and late complications, including anastomotic stricture and urinary incontinence. RESULTS: The median age of patients was 66 years (range, 53 to 74 years) and median follow-up duration was 44.0 months (range, 2 to 157 months). None of the patients died due to surgery-related causes. Intraoperative complications included rectal injuries in six patients (4.9%) and ureteral injury in one patient (0.8%). As for late complications, anastomotic strictures were observed in 16 patients (13.8%), and stress urinary incontinence that persisted for more than 12 months was observed in 13 patients. The estimated continence recovery rate at 12 months was 87.3%. Multivariate analysis did not reveal any predictive factor for anastomotic stricture. However, the blood loss volume and period of surgery were significant predictive factors of continence recovery. CONCLUSIONS: Radical retropubic prostatectomy was safely performed, though there were various intra- or postoperative complications that were adequately managed. Early recovery of continence was related to the blood loss volume and the surgery period. Adequate surgical experience and a meticulous technique to avoid excessive bleeding are important factors for an early recovery.

Treatment of invasive bladder cancer: lessons from the past and perspective for the future.

Radical cystectomy with lymphadenectomy is the gold standard for treatment of invasive bladder cancer. However, the treatment alone does not always provide a satisfactory result for the disease extending outside the bladder. In this review we discuss several clinical issues in the diagnosis and treatment of this invasive disease. Although the quality of diagnostic imaging modalities has improved, they are still not sensitive enough for the staging of the disease, especially for early invasive disease. In addition, lack of serum markers hinders appropriate monitoring of patients with the disease. Regarding the surgical aspect of lymphadenectomy, the area of its dissection, the standard number of nodes retrieved and the method of pathological examination should be established so that the clinical benefits of surgery can be more clearly defined. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for invasive disease is promising for improvement of survival of patients. A chemotherapy regimen as effective as, but less toxic than, MVAC (methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin and cisplatin) has been reported and several phase III clinical trials have been launched to determine the benefits of adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy with newly developed agents. However, we still lack a chemotherapy regimen more effective than MVAC, which is the most crucial issue in the treatment of this invasive disease. An alternative option for such disease may be bladder preservation with transurethral resection of tumor followed by chemoradiotherapy. However, patients who are indicated for this treatment may be limited to those with early invasive disease having certain favorable clinical and pathological features.

Characteristics of patients with prostate cancer who have initially been treated by hormone therapy in Japan: J-CaP surveillance.

OBJECTIVE: Hormone therapy for prostate cancer has empirically prevailed in Japan. We planned to evaluate the trends and outcome of hormone therapy for establishing an adequate guideline. METHODS: Patients with prostate cancer who were initially treated by hormone therapy were registered through the J-CaP registration system. This report summarizes the background factors. RESULTS: From January 2001 to October 2003, 17,872 patients were registered from 395 institutes throughout Japan. The background factors of 17,312 patients were analyzed. The 17,872 patients were estimated as composing more than half of newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients in Japan. Of these, 22.9, 35.1, 32.9 and 8.6% belonged to T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively. For the purposes of hormone therapy, 77.5% was primary hormone therapy. Neoadjuvant setting and adjuvant setting were 18.1 and 4.3%, respectively. About 60% of the hormone therapy was combined hormone therapy with LH-RHa plus anti-androgens. CONCLUSION: Irrespective of patients' age, TNM, stage of illness, or histological background, the majority of prostate cancer patients in Japan are receiving hormone therapy. It is necessary to evaluate whether this trend is merely a continuation of past experience of Japanese urologists or if there is a difference in the profile of effect and side-effect in the case of Japanese patients compared to therapy given in Westerners.

An allograft model of androgen independent prostatic neuroendocrine carcinoma derived from a large probasin promoter-T antigen transgenic mouse line.

PURPOSE: Animal models that mimic this hormone refractory prostate cancer may be useful for developing and testing novel treatment strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the prostate of the 12T-10 transgenic mouse an allograft model was established by transplantation into a nude mouse. To our knowledge we describe the first allograft model derived from the primary prostate tumor of a transgenic mouse. RESULTS: The primary tumor progressed from high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasm to invasive, undifferentiated and metastatic cancer with loss of androgen receptor expression. After 10 passages in nude mice the allograft retained the same histological and immunohistochemical features as the primary tumors, including neuroendocrine differentiation. The allograft demonstrated androgen independent growth and metastases to liver and lung, paralleling tumor behavior in the original transgenic line. Cytogenetic characterization of the allograft revealed consistent chromosomal abnormalities for multiple in vivo passages. CONCLUSIONS: This allograft model may give insight into the mechanism by which human prostate cancer progresses to an androgen independent state and provide a system for testing drugs that can inhibit this disease.

Is seminal vesiculitis a discrete disease entity? Clinical and microbiological study of seminal vesiculitis in patients with acute epididymitis.

PURPOSE: To our knowledge direct evidence of inflammatory involvement of the seminal vesicles has not previously been reported in patients with acute epididymitis. We verified the discrete disease entity of seminal vesiculitis associated with acute epididymitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 13 patients who were clinically diagnosed with acute epididymitis. We report imaging, cytological and bacteriological findings in the seminal vesicles of patients with acute epididymitis. RESULTS: On transrectal ultrasonography 12 of the 13 patients (92.3%) had dilatation of the seminal vesicle on the side ipsilateral to epididymitis. Dilatation of the contralateral side was found in only 4 patients. Seminal vesicle fluid from the ipsilateral side showed inflammatory findings in all patients. In patients 40 years and younger Chlamydia trachomatis was detected in seminal vesicle fluid in 7 of the 8 patients with epididymitis with results positive for the microorganism on first voided urine. CONCLUSIONS: Inflammatory responses were found in the seminal vesicles of patients with acute epididymitis. Chlamydia trachomatis was the causative pathogen most frequently detected in seminal vesicle fluid. Seminal vesiculitis is clearly associated with acute epididymitis and it may be a discrete disease entity.

A case-control study of diet and prostate cancer in Japan: possible protective effect of traditional Japanese diet.

The age-adjusted incidence of prostate cancer is low in Japan, and it has been suggested that the traditional Japanese diet, which includes many soy products, plays a preventive role against prostate cancer. We performed a case-control study on dietary factors and prostate cancer in order to assess the hypothesis that the traditional Japanese diet reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Four geographical areas (Ibaraki, Fukuoka, Nara, and Hokkaido) of Japan were selected for the survey. Average daily intake of food from 5 years before the diagnosis was measured by means of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. We studied 140 cases and 140 individually age ( +/- 5 years)-matched hospital controls for analysis. Estimates of age-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and linear trends were calculated by conditional logistic regression models with adjustment for cigarette smoking and total energy intake as confounding factors. Consumption of fish, all soybean products, tofu (bean curds), and natto (fermented soybeans) was associated with decreased risk. ORs of the fourth vs. first quartile and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were 0.45 (0.20-1.02) for fish, 0.53 (0.24-1.14) for all soybean products, 0.47 (0.20-1.08) for tofu, and 0.25 (0.05-1.24) for natto. Consumption of fish and natto showed significantly decreasing linear trends for risk (P < 0.05). Consumption of meat was significantly associated with increased risk (the OR of the second vs. first quartile was 2.19, 95%CI 1.00-4.81). Consumption of milk, fruits, all vegetables, green-yellow vegetables, and tomatoes showed no association. Our results provide support to the hypothesis that the traditional Japanese diet, which is rich in soybean products and fish, might be protective against prostate cancer.

Detection of Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum (biovar 1) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (biovar 2) in patients with non-gonococcal urethritis using polymerase chain reaction-microtiter plate hybridization.

AIM: To use polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-microtiter plate hybridization assays to detect Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum (biovar 1) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (biovar 2) in first-voided urine specimens from patients with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). METHODS: A total of 153 male patients with NGU, who visited one of 24 clinics in Japan, were recruited for this study. All were examined using PCR-microtiter plate hybridization assays for the presence of M. genitalium, M. hominis, U. parvum (biovar 1) and U. urealyticum (biovar 2) in first-voided urine specimens. They were also examined for the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis. RESULTS: Of these 153 patients, 73 (47.7%) were positive for C. trachomatis. Overall, the prevalence was 17.0% for M. genitalium, 16.3% for U. urealyticum (biovar 2), 7.8% for U. parvum (biovar 1) and 2.6% for M. hominis. In the 80 patients with non-chlamydial NGU, the prevalence of M. genitalium, U. urealyticum (biovar 2), U. parvum (biovar 1) and M. hominis was 23.8%, 18.8%, 8.8% and 2.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the prevalence of mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas in NGU in Japan. M. genitalium and U. urealyticum (biovar 2) might be pathogens of NGU and could be associated with persistent and recurrent urethritis. When patients with NGU are treated, such pathogens should be taken into account. This PCR-microtiter plate hybridization assay provides a useful method for diagnosing NGU caused by M. genitalium and U. urealyticum (biovar 2).

Membrane-anchored CD14 is important for induction of interleukin-8 by lipopolysaccharide and peptidoglycan in uroepithelial cells.

We investigated the induction of interleukin-8 (IL-8) by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and peptidoglycan (PGN) in the bladder cancer cell lines T24, 5637, UM-UC-3, and HT1197. T24 and 5637 cells strongly induced IL-8 after stimulation with LPS or PGN in a dose- and time-dependent manner, whereas UM-UC-3 and HT1197 cells did so very weakly. The expression of CD14 at the mRNA, total cellular protein, and cell surface protein levels differed among these cell lines, but the expression levels of Toll-like receptors 2 and 4 (TLR2 and TLR4) were not significantly different. The CD14 expression levels were found to correlate with the inducibility of IL-8 by LPS or PGN. Treatment of T24 and 5637 cells with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C to eliminate CD14 from the cell surface dramatically suppressed the induction of IL-8. On the other hand, UM-UC-3 cells transfected with CD14 cDNA expressed membrane-anchored CD14 and showed more efficient induction of IL-8 by LPS stimulation than untransfected controls. These results suggest that the presence of the membrane-anchored, but not the soluble, form of CD14 is a strong factor in IL-8 induction in bladder epithelial cells in response to bacterial components. The presence of the membrane-anchored form of CD14 may thus be a determinant for the inflammatory response of uroepithelial cells.

The protein encoded by cancer/testis gene D40/AF15q14 is localized in spermatocytes, acrosomes of spermatids and ejaculated spermatozoa.

We have previously identified and cloned a human gene, D40, that is preferentially expressed in testis among normal organs, while it is widely expressed in various human tumor cell lines and primary tumors derived from different organs. In this report, we have examined the expression and localization of this protein in human testis with an antibody specific to D40 protein. In Western analyses, the anti-D40 antibody recognized a major band with a molecular mass of 300 kDa and a minor band of 250 kDa. These bands were not observed in the testis lysates from patients with Sertoli-cell-only syndrome and with Kleinfelter syndrome, who lack germ cells of the testis, indicating that D40 protein is expressed in the germ cells of normal testis. Immunohistochemical studies have revealed that D40 protein is highly expressed in spermatocytes and in the pre-acrosome of round spermatids. In the acrosome, D40 protein expression is observed not inside but outside the acrosome membrane. This is consistent with the finding that the amino-acid sequence at the amino terminal of the D40 protein lacks a hydrophobic signal peptide that is required for proteins to translocate to the membrane. Expression of D40 protein is observed in the acrosome of ejaculated spermatozoa as well, although the level is low compared with that in the pre-acrosome of spermatids. These results suggest that D40 protein plays important roles in spermatogenesis, especially in the formation and maintenance of the acrosome.

[Analysis of clinical manifestations and endocrinological aspects of patients having PADAM-like symptoms].

PURPOSE: To analyze clinical manifestations and endocrinological aspects of the patients who visited our hospital to be examined for partial androgen deficiency in the aging male (PADAM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred forty-three patients were evaluated. History taking and questionnaires were employed for analysis of their symptoms. Serum total testosterone (T), free-T and other hormones were measured for evaluation of the androgen deficiency. RESULTS: The chief complains of the patients were categorized as psychological symptoms, somatovegatative symptoms, and sexual symptoms, accounting for 51%, 36%, and 13%, respectively. A depressed mood, hot flashes and sweating and erectile dysfunction were dominant in these symptom categories, respectively. The prevalence of the psychological symptoms and somatovegatative symptoms was relatively high in the 30-50-year-old and 60-70-year-old groups, respectively. The free-T, but not total-T, was significantly decreased with aging as measured by the RIA method. Twenty one percent of the patients showed a lower total-T level than the normal range (2.7-10.7 ng/ml). The percentage of those with a total-T level lower than 2.0 ng/dl, which is the criterion for T-replacement recommended by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists guidelines, was 9%. Eighty two percent and 30% of the patients had lower free-T levels than the normal range (15.2-43.5 pg/ml) and that of men in their twenties in the Canadian data (9.3-26.5 pg/ml). Depending on the criteria of androgen deficiency, not all patients had low total-T and free-T levels. CONCLUSION: Patients suspected of having PADAM present various clinical symptoms and endocrinological aspects.

[XX 'pure' gonadal dysgenesis and XYY syndrome].

XX 'pure' gonadal dysgenesis is a disease related to Turner's syndrome. Patients of this disease are characterized by normal female external genitalia, bilateral streak gonads, amenorrhea and sexual infantilism. Recently, it has been reported that point mutations of the FSH receptor gene may be one of cause of this disease. The relationship between criminal behavior and XYY syndrome is still controversial. Increased incidence of disomic sperm in 47,XYY males has been reported by fluorescent in situ hybridization(FISH). Genetic counseling should be done when they undergo intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

Partial nephrectomy for small localized renal cell carcinoma.

We retrospectively reviewed the records of 54 patients with RCC who underwent partial nephrectomy for the primary lesion between 1992 and 2001. The indications for partial nephrectomy were elective in 43 and imperative in 11 patients. We selected 51 patients with clinical stage T1a who underwent open radical nephrectomy for localized RCC for comparison during the same period. We evaluated the peri- and postoperative complications, disease-free survival rates and changes of renal function in the partial nephrectomy (PN) group, compared to the radical nephrectomy (RN) group. There was no significant difference with regard to pathological findings and clinical outcomes between two groups, except for the amount of intraoperative bleeding. Three patients in the PN group developed postoperative complications, consisting of urine leakage in 2 patients and renal hypertension in 1 patient. The 5-year disease-free survival rates in the PN and RN groups were 90% and 97%, respectively. Local recurrence from the resected area of the renal parenchyma was not found in patients in the PN group. All patients in the PN group maintained satisfactory and stable renal function. In the RN group, renal function slowly deteriorated in 2 patients. Therefore, partial nephrectomy offers cancer control and an acceptable low mortality rate, comparable to those of radical nephrectomy.

The 3rd Conference on Asian Trends in Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy.

From its inception in 2001, the Conference on Asian Trends in Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy has served as an annual forum for Asian urologists to compare data on prostate cancer and to discuss issues regarding the use of hormone therapy. The 3rd conference, held in Tokyo in December 2003, began with participants from China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan presenting QOL data deriving from a survey of patients with prostate cancer. For this purpose, each country translated the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate (FACT-P) questionnaire into its own language. Although the surveys conducted in each country included a heterogeneous cohort of patients and gave very mixed results, the trial of FACT-P in Asian countries seemed propitious and in future may provide insights that could prove beneficial to patients. Day 2 of the conference included 2 discussions, focusing on the most appropriate number of biopsy cores and the implementation of prospective trials involving the collaboration of Asian countries, respectively. In the latter discussion, although a varied assortment of proposals were put forth, the participants generally agreed that any collaborative study must be a prospective outcome study conducted in a relatively short time not exceeding 2-3 years, and that patient registration should be done using the Internet.

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (2002). I. Susceptibility distribution].

The bacterial strains isolated from 491 patients diagnosed as having urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 13 institutions in Japan were supplied between August 2002 and July 2003. The susceptibilities of them to many kinds of antimicrobial agents were investigated. Of them, 578 strains were estimated as causative bacteria and used for the investigation. The number of them was 578 strains consisting of 177 gram-positive bacterial strains (30.6%) and 401 gram-negative bacterial strains (69.4%). Against Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin (VCM) showed a strong activity and prevented the growth of all strains with 1 microg/mL. The susceptibility of Staphylococcus epidermidis to cephems including cefotiam (CTM) was relatively good. Against Enterococcus faecalis, ampicillin (ABPC), imipenem (IPM), and VCM showed the strongest antibacterial activity (MIC90: 2-4 microg/mL). In addition, the low sensitive strains (MIC: > or = 256 microg/mL) to clarithromycin (CAM) were detected at 48.3% but none to cefozopran (CZOP). The antibacterial activity of cephems to Escherichia coli was generally good, and especially CZOP and cefpirome (CPR) showed the highest activity (MIC90: < or = 0.125 microg/mL). Quinolone resistant E. coli was detected at frequency of 13.5%, which was higher than that in the last year. The antibacterial activity of cephems to Citrobacter freundii was generally low but CZOP and CPR had a strong acitivity (MIC90: 0.25 and 0.5 microg/mL, respectively). The antibacterial activity of cephems to Klebsiella pneumoniae was good and especially cefmenoxime (CMX), cefixime (CFIX), flomoxef (FMOX), CPR, and CZOP showed stronger activity (MIC90: < or = 0.125 microg/mL). Against Serratia marcescens, meropenem (MEPM) had the highest antibacterial activity followed by CPR and CZOP. Against Proteus mirabilis, CMX, ceftazidime (CAZ), CPR, MEPM, carumonam (CRMN), and levofloxacin (LVFX) showed the strongest activity (MC90: < or = 0.125 microg/mL). Among other cephems, CZOP and CFIX were also strong (MIC90: 0.25 microg/mL). The antibacterial activity of the drugs to Pseudomonas aeruginosa was generally low, and MIC90 of all the drugs were ranged from 64 to > or = 256 microg/mL except IPM and amikacin (AMK) having 16 microg/mL. The antibacterial activity of CZOP was relatively good (MIC50: 8 microg/mL).

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (2002). II. Background of patients].

A total of 615 bacterial strains isolated from 491 patients diagnosed as having urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 13 institutions in Japan were supplied between August 2002 and July 2003. Then, the clinical background of patients were investigated such as sex, age, and type of infections and kind of bacteria, frequency of bacteria isolation by age and infections, bacteria and infections by timing of antibiotics administration, and bacteria and infections by surgical procedures. The bacterial strains were divided by the age and sex of the patients and the types of infections. In males, the number of patients aged less than 50 years was few and the complicated UTIs without indwelling catheter was observed most frequently. In the present time, the bacteria most frequently isolated were Escherichia coli. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis were also relatively frequently isolated. E. coli decreased and P. aeruginosa increased with the complication of the infections. E. faecalis tended to be isolated more frequently in the complicated UTIs than in the uncomplicated UTIs. With respect to the relation of these results to the age of the patients, in the uncomplicated UTIs, the isolation frequency of E. coli was the highest in all age groups, accounting for 70.8% in 20-49 years old. In the complicated UTIs without indwelling catheter, the isolation frequency of E. coli decreased with aging of the patients and was lower than that of E. faecalis in the patients aged 70 or more (18.3 vs 20.6%). In the complicated UTIs with indwelling catheter, the isolation frequency of E. coli was lower than in the uncomplicated UTIs in all age groups and P. aeruginosa and E. faecalis were more frequently isolated. In comparison of causative bacteria in UTIs between before and after the administration of antibiotics, E. coli decreased and P. aeruginosa increased after the administration in any UTIs. In comparison of causative bacteria in UTIs with or without surgery, E. coli was more frequently isolated in the patients without surgery, while P. aeruginosa was more in the patients with surgery in any UTIs. E. faecalis was more frequently isolated in the patients with surgery in uncomplicated and complicated UTIs without indwelling catheter and in the patients without surgery in complicated UTIs with indwelling catheter.

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (2002). III. Secular changes in susceptibility].

The bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) isolated from patients diagnosed as urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 13 institutions in Japan were supplied between August 2002 and July 2003. The susceptibilities of these bacteria to various antimicrobial agents were examined. The bacteria were divided into 2 groups consisting of uncomplicated UTIs and complicated UTIs (with and without indwelling catheter) based on their isolation origins. The results were compared with those obtained between 1993 and 2001. The drug sensitivity of S. aureus in this year was similar to those in up to the previous year and S. aureus showed the best susceptibility to vancomycin. The drug sensitivity of E. faecalis in this year also was similar to those in up to the previous year. The drug sensitivity of E. coli in this year was generally good except penicillins and was similar to those in up to the previous year. Among cephems, cefozopran (CZOP) and cefpirome (CPR) showed the highest potency (MIC90: < or = 0.125 microg/mL). An antibacterial activity of cefotiam (CTM) was similar to it in 10 years ago and was fine (MIC90: < or = 1 microg/mL). The sensitivity of E. coli to carbapenems and carumonam (CRMN) also was good like to CZOP. However, the sensitivity of the complicated UTIs group to quinolones decreased after 2000 and was suggested to develop the resistance to the drug. The drug sensitivity of Klebsiella spp. in this year also was similar to those in up to the previous year. The bacteria showed good susceptibility (MIC: < or = 0.125 microg/mL) to cefmenoxime (CMX), CPR, cefixime (CFIX), flomoxef (FMOX), and CZOP among cephems. The drug sensitivity of P. aeruginosa was generally low. Most of the bacteria were little sensitive to cephems except CZOP and ceftazidime (CAZ). The sensitive bacteria to CZOP and ceftazidime (CAZ) were observed to be 26.8% (15/56 strains) and 39.3% (22/56 strains) in complicated UTIs group, respectively. The sensitivity profile of P. aeruginosa to the other tested drugs was not much different from that in up to the previous year. However, the sensitivity of the bacteria to carbapenems tended to decrease after 2000, and the low sensitive strains (MIC: > or = 256 microg/mL) were detected at 22.2% (2/9 strains) in the uncomplicated UTIs group and 3.6% (2/56 strains) in the complicated UTIs group.
