Activities of acetylcholinesterase and NA+, K+ -ATP-ase in human erythrocytes after ethanol consumption.

The influence of ethanol consumption on acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and Na+, K+ -ATP-ase activities was examined in 14 healthy volunteers after 30 minutes of ethanol treatment at a dose 0.6 g/kg of body weight. It was observed that the activity of both enzymes decreased. The activity of AchE was significantly lower, and that of Na+, K+ -ATP-ase tended to be lower, but the difference was not significant. In vitro experiments showed that ethanol inhibited the AchE and N+, K+ -ATP-ase activities immediately and in proportion to the concentration of ethanol used.

Effect of ethanol on human erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity and malonyl dialdehyde concentration.

The effect of a single administration of ethanol on the erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity and malonyl dialdehyde concentration was examined in 14 healthy volunteers. We observed that 30 min after ethanol consumption in a dose 0.6 g/kg of body weight, superoxide dismutase activity was significantly higher as compared to that before ethanol treatment. No changes in susceptibility of erythrocytes to lipid peroxidation was observed after ethanol consumption. There was no significant changes in the malonyl dialdehyde concentration before and after ethanol treatment.

[Effect of gamma radiation on levels of adenine nucleotides in erythrocytes of healthy individuals after submaximum physical exertion].

The authors studied the effect of gamma radiation and submaximum physical exercise on adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP), adenosine-5'-diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine-5'-monophosphate (AMP) contents in erythrocytes of healthy males. Twenty one men aged 20-22 years were examined. They underwent physical exercise at doses of 2 w/kg body weight for 15 min. Erythrocytes were exposed to gamma radiation (500 gy doses) from 60Co source. The concentration of adenine nucleotides in erythrocytes was measured by the Boehringer Mannheim tests. The submaximum physical exercise was found to decrease ATP content and to to increase ADP and AMP in erythrocytes. Gamma radiation at 500 Gy dose was found to decrease ATP concentration in erythrocytes both at rest and after submaximum exercise and to increase AD content. It was revealed that AMP content increased at rest and decreased after submaximum exercise in irradiated erythrocytes.

[Effect of gamma radiation on the concentration of pyruvate and lactate in erythrocytes of healthy men after submaximal physical exercise].

The aim of this work was to study the effect of gamma radiation and submaximal physical exercise on the concentration of final products of anaerobic glycolytic pathway in erythrocytes of healthy men. Twenty one men aged 20-22 were examined. They underwent physical exercise at doses of 2 w/kg body weight for 15 min. Erythrocytes were taken in the rest and after physical exercise and were exposed to gamma radiation (500 Gy doses) from 60Co source. The concentration of pyruvate was estimated by Fermognost tests and the concentration of lactate by Boehringer Mannheim tests. The submaximal physical exercise was found to cause a significantly increased concentration of pyruvate and lactate in the non-radiated and irradiated erythrocytes. Gamma radiation at 500 Gy dose was found to increase concentration of pyruvate in erythrocytes (in the rest and after physical exercise) with simultaneous decrease of lactate concentration.

[Effect of gamma radiation on the 2,3-diphosphoglycerate level of erythrocytes of healthy persons after submaximal physical exertion].

The authors studied the effects of gamma radiation and submaximal physical exercise on 2,3-DFG content in healthy men erythrocytes. Twelve men aged 20-22 were examined. They were loaded by physical exercise (at doses of 2 M/kg body weight) for 15 minutes. Erythrocytes were exposed to gamma radiation (500 Gy doses) from a 60Co source. The concentration of 2,3-DFG in erythrocytes was estimated by Bartlett's method. Gamma radiation at 500 Gy dose was found to decrease 2,3-DFG content in erythrocytes both at rest and after submaximal exercise. Furthermore, submaximal physical exercise was found to decrease 2,3-DFG content in non-irradiated erythrocytes.

[Effect of gamma radiation on fructose-1,6-diphosphate aldolase activity in the erythrocytes of healthy persons after submaximal physical exertion].

The authors studied the effects of gamma radiation and submaximal physical exercise on aldolase activity in healthy men erythrocytes. Twelve men aged 20-22 were examined. They underwent physical exercise at doses of 2 W/kg body weight for 15 minutes. Erythrocytes were exposed to gamma radiation (500 Gy doses) from 60Co source. The activity of aldolase in erythrocytes was estimated by Fermognost test. The submaximal physical exercise was indicated to increase the aldolase activity. Gamma radiation at 500 Gy dose was found to increase aldolase enzymatic activity in erythrocytes both a rest and after submaximal physical exercise.

[Effect of gamma radiation on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in the erythrocytes of healthy persons after submaximal physical exertion].

The authors studied effects of gamma radiation and submaximal physical exercise on G6P-DH activity in healthy men erythrocytes. Twelve men aged 20-22 were examined. They were loaded by physical exercise (at doses of 2 W/kg body weight) for 15 minutes. Erythrocytes were exposed to gamma radiation (500 Gy doses) from 60Co source. The activity of G6P-DH in erythrocytes was estimated by Boehringer-Mannheim test. Gamma radiation at 500 Gy dose was found to inhibit G6P-DH enzymatic activity in erythrocytes both at rest and after submaximal physical exercise. Furthermore, submaximal physical exercise was indicated to increase the G6P-DH activity in irradiated erythrocytes.

[Effect of gamma radiation on selected indicators of oxygen metabolism in erythrocytes of patients with multiple sclerosis].

The aim of the work was to study certain parameters of aerobic metabolism in the erythrocytes of multiple sclerosis patients and healthy controls after exposure of the erythrocytes to ionising radiation. The group of patients included 32 cases (17 women and 15 men) aged 19-54 years. The control group comprised 60 healthy subjects (28 women and 32 men) aged 19-56 years. The erythrocytes were exposed at +20 degrees C in contact with air during 50 minutes. The source of gamma radiation was 60 Co of 1.33 MeV energy and 10 Gy/min yield. In the erythrocytes of the patients the activity of the antioxidative enzymatic system was reduced, with decreased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and with increased level of malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) at the same time gamma radiation as an additional source of free radical generation increased the changes of these biochemical parameters which suggested a greater susceptibility of multiple sclerosis erythrocytes to oxidative stress.

[Superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) activity in erythrocytes of patients with multiple sclerosis].

The purpose of the study was determination of the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) in the erythrocytes of multiple sclerosis patients taking into consideration certain aspects of the disease, such as its duration, clinical form and course, age and sex of the patients. The study included 34 patients (17 males and 17 females) aged 19 to 56 years. The control group comprised 64 healthy subjects (25 females and 38 males) aged 19-59 years. A significant reduction was found of SOD-1 activity in the erythrocytes of the patients which may suggest a lower enzymatic defense mechanisms against oxidative stress. No difference in the activity of SOD-1 was found between clinical forms and different courses of the disease, although the activity changed in relation to age, sex and disease duration.

[Effect of the treatment with adrenocorticotropic hormone on the 2,3-diphosphoglycerate level in the erythrocytes of patients with multiple sclerosis].

The reported study was carried out in 20 patients with multiple sclerosis (12 women, 8 men) aged 23 to 54 years, with disease duration from 3 to 20 years. The patients were treated with the preparation ACTH-Polfa 2000 mg for one treatment course. The patients were divided into subgroups considering the age, disease duration, clinical form and clinical course of the disease. The control group comprised 22 healthy subjects (10 women and 12 men) aged from 22 to 41 years. The concentration of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate in the erythrocytes was determined by Bartlett's method twice: before and after ACTH treatment. Before the treatment the concentration of 2,3-DPG in the erythrocytes of the patients was not different from that in the controls, but after the treatment this concentration was significantly increased in all groups. It was demonstrated, furthermore, that 2,3-DPG concentration in the erythrocytes could change before ACTH treatment depending on the age of the patients and the clinical course of the disease.
