Anomalous pancreaticobiliary union was found in nine cases among 300 consecutive adult patients examined by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Three had congenital choledochal cysts: one had a cyst of the choledochus associated with a cyst of the intrahepatic bile duct, another had a fusiform dilation of the choledochus, and the third had a choledochal diverticulum. Five of the nine patients had biliary malignancies (55.6%): four carcinomas of the gallbladder and one carcinoma of the choledochus. On the other hand, 18 of 291 patients without anomalous pancreaticobiliary union had biliary malignancies (6.2%): four carcinomas of the gallbladder and 14 carcinomas of the choledochus. When anomalous pancreaticobiliary union is detected, biliary malignancy, especially carcinoma of the gallbladder, should be considered as a possible complication.
A case of Hodgkin's disease with amyloidosis in various organs in a 68-year-old Japanese man is reported. The initial sign was dysuria followed by diarrhea, melena, and ileus. There was no history of pulmonary tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis. Autopsy findings suggested that Hodgkin's disease may have been the initial disease in development of secondary systemic amyloidosis, followed by dysuria and paralytic ileus.
Rabbits were immunized with vaccinia-soluble early antigen (Es antigen) in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). Circulating neutralizing antibody was not induced, but CF antibody against the soluble antigens of vaccinia-infected cells was induced. By intradermal inoculation of vaccinia virus, erythema developed early at the site of inoculation and enlarged up to 3 days post infection (p.i.). No multiplication of the viruses in the erythematous areas was indicated on day 3 p.i. The erythematous areas showed histologically severe changes involving infiltration of numerous cells accompanied with necrotic and hemorrhagic lesions in a part of the dermis. Eosinophilic leukocytes were dominant and there were also some lymphocytes in the cell infiltration. The role of these kinds of cells was discussed in connection with cell-mediated immunity in the mechanism of excluding vaccinia virus from the immune rabbits.

The development of renal tubular cell tumors by the end of experimental week 32 was studied in inbred Wistar male rats fed a diet containing 1,000 or 500 ppm N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethylnitrosamine (EHEN) for 2 weeks and then given 1,00 ppm basic lead acetate (LA) for 20 weeks. A low dose of LA enhanced the development of renal tubular cell tumors in rats treated with EHEN and increased the number and size of the tumors. The incidence of renal tubular cell tumors at the end of week 32 was 50% in rats treated with 1,000 ppm EHEN for 2 weeks and 100% in rats treated with 1,000 ppm EHEN for 2 weeks and then given 1,000 ppm LA for 20 weeks. The incidences of renal tumors of more than 3 mm in diameter were 70% in rats treated with 1,000 ppm EHEN plus LA and 0% in rats treated with EHEN or LA alone. The low dose of LA showed the enhancing effect of the development of renal tubular cell tumors in rats treated with a subthreshold dose of 500 ppm EHEN.

31phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) measurements have provided new and valuable insights for studying the metabolism of living systems. The aim of this paper is to introduce a technique of application of 31P-NMR measurements using a surface coil method, and to discuss the effects of halothane anesthesia and hypoxic hypoxia on the energetic metabolism of intact rat brains. All measurements were made using a JEOL FX 270 spectrometer with a super conducting magnet of 54-mm bore diameter. The magnetic field intensity of this machine is 6.3 tesla, and the resonance frequency used for 31P was 109.14 MHz. We remodelled an ordinary probe to take a live rat, and the animals were made to inhale anesthetic halothane or mixture of oxygen and nitrogen at various concentrations controlled by a flow regulator. The best conditions for measurements with our surface coil method were determined in this study as follows: (1) 90 degrees pulse width and selectivity, Fig. 1 shows signal selectivity in depthwise direction changed with 90 degrees pulse width, which was set to 20 microseconds. (2) Sensitivity and resolution; To obtain a spectrum of 31P-NMR from a rat brain 500 accumulations of free induction decays were considered suitable for both time and space resolution. Fig. 2 shows variations of signal intensity with pulse repetition time, which was set to 2 sec. It took about 17 min for averaging to get a spectrogram. (3) Quantitative accuracy and qualification; As shown in Fig. 3, a linear relationship was found between the signal intensity of beta-phosphate of ATP and the concentration of ATP solutions, thus proving the quantitative accuracy of our systems.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The newly developed cefadroxil (CDX) dry syrup in a mean daily dose of 32.9 mg/kg t.i.d. or q.i.d. was administered to children for a period of 8 days on the average; viz. a total of 64 cases consisting of 39 cases of tonsillitis, 2 of tonsillitis complicated with otitis media, 1 of bronchitis, 1 of pneumonia, 14 of scarlet fever, and 7 of urinary tract infections; and its clinical and bacteriological effects, and adverse reactions were examined, leading to the following results. 1. The clinical effects were "good" or "excellent" in any of 39 cases of tonsillitis, 2 of tonsillitis complicated with otitis media, 1 of pneumonia, 14 of scarlet fever, and 7 of urinary tract infections, and "fair" only in a case of bronchitis, showing the high efficacy of 98.4%. 2. The clinical effects by daily dose were compared only in the great cases of tonsillitis between the 2 daily dose groups of 30 mg/kg or below and 31 to 40 mg/kg, and both groups showed "good" or "excellent" results, but the latter group revealed that the excellent rate was greater by 20.8% than that of the former group. 3. The frequency of daily administration was 3 times or 4 times and the cases of 4 times administration were few in any disease. In comparison of clinical effects between the 3 times group and the 4 times group in the whole cases, no significant difference was observed between both groups but it is desirable to make the 4 times administration in view of the pharmacokinetics. 4. The bacteriological effects could be judged in 15 cases, namely bacteria were eradicated in 14 cases and unchanged in 1 case, showing a good result of the eradication rate as 93.3%. 5. No adverse reaction was observed and the laboratory test values showed eosinophilia in 7 cases (15.9%) and abnormal elevations of GPT in 1 case (4.5%), of GOT and GPT in 2 case (9.1%), of LDH in 1 case (4.8%) and of BUN in 1 case (4.8%), but 4 of the 7 cases with eosinophilia seemed attributable to underlying diseases or objective diseases. From the above it can be said that this preparation is a useful drug in mild bacterial diseases.
Phenobarbital (PB) and barbital (BB) promoted the development of thyroid tumors in rats treated with a sub-effective dose of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (DHPN) for thyroid tumorigenesis. Rats were given s.c. injections of 70 mg DHPN/100 g body weight once a week for 4 or 6 weeks with or without diet containing 500 p.p.m. PB or BB for the next 12 weeks. The incidences of thyroid tumors at the end of week 20 of the experiment were 66% in rats given DHPN for 4 weeks and then PB, 23% in rats given DHPN for 4 weeks and then BB, 100% in rats given DHPN for 6 weeks and then PB, 45% in rats given DHPN for 6 weeks and then BB, and 23% in rats given DHPN for 6 weeks. Rats given only DHPN for 4 weeks or only PB or BB had no thyroid tumors after 20 weeks.
3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole (AT) promoted the development of thyroid tumors in rats treated with a subeffective dose of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (DHPN) for thyroid tumorigenesis. The incidences of thyroid tumors at the end of the 20-week experiment were 91% in rats injected s.c. once a week for four weeks with 70 mg DHPN per 100 g body weight and then given diet containing 2000 p.p.m. AT for 12 weeks, 100% in rats injected s.c. once a week for eight weeks with 70 mg DHPN per 100 g body weight and then given diet containing 2000 p.p.m. AT for 12 weeks, and 58% in rats injected s.c. once a week for 8 weeks with 70 mg DHPN per 100 g body weight. Rats only injected s.c. once a week for four weeks with DHPN or only given diet containing AT for 12 weeks had no thyroid tumors at the end of the experiment.
