Apoferritin particles were found in mouse peritoneal macrophages cultured in vitro. They were found as 20S particles in the "ribosomal fraction" of macrophages labeled with L-[14C]glutamic acid. Possibilities that they were breakdown products of ribosomes or of other well-known contaminants of the ribosomal fraction were excluded because they did not incorporate [5-3H]uridine. They were resistant to RNase and were relatively resistant to detergent. The antibody against horse spleen apoferritin precipitated about 70% of the particles in the 20S region, judging by measurement of radioactivity. On in vitro incubation with Fe2+ and suitable oxidizing agents the sedimentation coefficient of 80% of the 20S particles changed to about 60S, which corresponds to that of ferritin. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed the presence of subunit structures with the same molecular size as that of mouse liver apoferritin. Under the electron microscope, the particles appeared spherical with a relatively uniform diameter of about 130 A.
In a double-blind comparative study, by 29 dermatological departments, the activity of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate (HC 17-B, Locoid), triamcinolone acetonide (TA) 0.1% and hydrocortisone 21-acetate (HA) 1%, were compared in patients suffering from acute eczematous dermatitis, atopic dematitis and psoriasis. After a 7-day period of observation, the results were evaluated by means of a chi2 test, and an Armitage tests. The following results were obtained: in acute eczematous dermatitis HC 17-B was found to be superior to the placebo and equal to TA; in atopic dermatitis HC 17-B was found to be superior to the placebo and HA, equal to TA; in psoriasis vulgaris HC 17-B was found to be superior to the placebo, HA and TA.
The histological evidence of EAE in mice was presented to show the identity with those of other species of animals. There was a typical perivascular mononuclear cell infiltration. In addition, a hyperacute form was characterized by edema and the infiltration of polymorphs. In vascular lesions, vascular stasis, thrombosis, and hemorrhage were observed. As for the effect of pertussis vaccine used in the induction of mouse EAE, responsiveness to the histamine sensitizing factor was not directly correlated to the incidence of EAE. However, the intravenous administration of pertussis vaccine caused remarkable leukocytosis, which might play a certain role in mouse EAE induction.

The corticopontine projections from the parietal association cortex (the anterior portion of the middle suprasylvian gyrus) were electrophysiologically investigated and compared with those from the frontal motor cortex (the anterior sigmoid gyrus) in cats under light Nembutal anaesthesia. It was indicated by field potential study that the pontine nucleus (PN) neurones receive a significant amount of the direct corticopontine fibres from both the parietal and frontal cortical areas. In extracellular unitary study, out of 107 PN neurones identified by antidromic activation due to the brachium pontis stimulation, 33 responded with firings to stimulation of the parietal association area and 64 to the frontal motor area. Only 10 of them were excited by both parietal and frontal stimulations, but they were not estimated to receive the dual monosynaptic projections from both cortical areas. There were found data suggesting that the pontocerebellar neurones with faster conduction velocities respond at shorter latencies to the cortical stimulation and those with slower conduction velocities fire at longer latencies on the cortical stimulation. No remarkable difference was observed between the topographical localization of the PN neurones receiving the projection fibres from the parietal association and the frontal motor cortical areas. It was concluded that a vast majority of the pontocerebellar neurones possibly receive monosynaptic contacts differentially with the corticopontine fibres originating from the parietal association and the frontal motor areas.

Encephalitogenic protein fraction (BEC) was isolated from bovine brain tissue by extraction with salt-ethanol mixture at neutral pH, instead of employing dilute mineral acid. The fraction BEC was separated into two fractions. An acid-soluble protein was encephalitogenic and the major component was very alike to the basic protein of myelin (Al). The other was acid-insoluble acidic protein that was not encephalitogenic even at a dose of 100 mug. The acidic protein formed an insoluble complex with Al rotein which was purified by Eylar's method. Encephalitogenic activity of the complex was higher than Al protein in young guinea pigs when injected with complete Freund's adjuvant. However, this enhancement of encephalitogenic activity was not observed in aged guinea pigs. The complex showed higher blastogenic activity than Al protein alone with peripheral blood lymphocytes from guinea pigs immunized with Al protein and complete Freund's adjuvant. These results show that an adjuvant-like acidic protein is present in brain tissue and the complex with Al protein enhances the induction of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE).
The condition of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) induction was investigated in several mice strains. SJL and C3H/He strains were found to be susceptible. A single immunization with mouse spinal cord, complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) and pertussis vaccine produced clinical signs of EAE in SJL and C3H/He strains after 11 to 18 days. Isogenic spinal cord produced EAE in C3H/He strain. A single immunization with myelin basic protein from bovine spinal cord in CFA and pertussis vaccine produced EAE in SJL strain. EAE susceptibility of SJL strain correlated with the amount of mycobacteria used for sensitization. It was necessary to give pertussis vaccine intravenously in all cases.
