[Therapeutic effectiveness of Crataegus].

Hawthorn (crataegus) has been used since antiquity for medicinal purposes. More recent research suggests it to be useful in congestive heart failure. Rigorous clinical trials show benefit concerning objective signs and subjective symptoms of congestive heart failure stage NYHA-II. No adverse drug reactions have been reported. It is therefore concluded that crataegus is an effective and safe therapeutic alternative for this indication.

Changes in blood rheology of grossly obese individuals during a very low calorie diet.

A group of grossly obese individuals were put on a 300 kcal diet for 15 days. Blood rheology was quantified by measuring blood and plasma viscosity, haematocrit, red cell aggregation and deformability, fibrinogen and ESR. After 15 days blood viscosity had decreased and red cell deformability increased. The results suggest that the rheological deficit in obesity can be partly normalized by low calorie diets.

Cardiovascular risk factors and hemorheology. Physical fitness, stress and obesity.

To date there is little information about hemorheological data in the presence of secondary risk factors. Inter- and intraindividual comparisons of hemorheological parameters show that fitness has a significant influence on blood fluidity as quantified by ex vivo measurements of blood and plasma viscosity, red cell filterability and red cell aggregation. In fitter individuals blood is more fluid. Similar observations can be made with stress. Prolonged psychoemotional stress leads to a loss in blood fluidity and red cell filterability. Finally a comparison between excessively obese patients and healthy controls reveals a deterioration in hemorheological parameters in the obese group. These results, together with reports from the literature suggest that all accepted cardiovascular risk factors are associated with abnormalities in the flow properties of blood. It is proposed that partly the same phenomena are involved in the genesis of atherosclerotic lesions and influence rheological properties of blood.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid and homovanillic acid concentration in the CSF of patients with senile dementia of Alzheimer's type.

The investigation of enzyme and neurotransmitter levels and/or their metabolites in the CSF of patients with senile dementia of Alzheimer's type (SDAT) could become a promising approach for a clinical research and diagnostic procedure. To learn more about the metabolic reflections of central metabolism in the CSF of patients with SDAT, we measured CSF levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and homovanillic acid (HVA), the dopamine metabolite. In 16 female patients with SDAT and in eight matched control patients, CSF GABA levels were measured by ion exchange with fluorimetric detection, and HVA levels were measured fluorimetrically. The GABA content of the CSF was significantly reduced in patients with SDAT, whereas the HVA level was unchanged.
