Impairment to viability of neutrophils and lymphocytes by angular psoralens and UV-radiation.

The angular psoralen derivative, 4,5'-dimethylangelicin (Dm Agn), both without and with UV-radiation induces under adequate conditions a higher percentage of lethally damaged cultured human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) as compared with angelicin (Agn). In general, PMN photosensitized with Dm Agn are less resistant than similarly photosensitized lymphocytes. These results suggest that Dm Agn might be used to improve the photochemo (PUVA-)therapy of skin diseases where PMN are of pathogenic importance.

[Influence of personality traits on reaction performance in volunteers after a single administration of placebo, crotylbarbital and caffeine].

We examined the influence of single applications of placebo, caffeine (7 mg/kg), and crotylbarbital (2 mg/kg) on reaction and attention performance in 15 volunteers. A newly developed reaction-time apparatus permits the reaction time to be split for differentiation between initiation time and movement time. Moreover, simple and complex attention performance can be quantified. The volunteers were selected as to the dimensions of "introversion/extraversion" and "emotional lability/stability" by means of the Freiburg Personality Inventory. Labile volunteers responded to placebo faster than stables. Caffeine improved mainly the performance of introverted subjects. Crotylbarbital was without influence on the reaction time at the threshold dose applied.

Effect of an acute dose of crotylbarbital on reaction time and attention testing in healthy human subjects.

The effect of an acute dose of crotylbarbital (2 mg/kg) on reaction time and attention testing was studied in 12 volunteers. This dose appeared to be a threshold for which both performance impairments and improvements were found. Relationships to the vigilance level of the subjects were established. The problem of reactive exertion increase is discussed in conjunction with crotylbarbital concentrations in the subjects' saliva.

[Biologic availability of caffeine in subjects with regard to the variability of the elimination half life].

400 mg of caffeine and sodium salicylate (= 220 mg of caffeine) were given orally and intravenously (at an interval of one week) to six test persons. The serum levels were determined; and certain pharmacokinetic parameters were measured, using an open one-compartment model. Finally, the absolute bioavailability was calculated. With one of the test persons this experiment was repeated ten times to evaluate the extent of the intra-individual variability of the half-life period and its repercussions on bioavailability.

[The performance of ECG telemetry in the analysis of rhythm disorders].

630 outpatients and inpatients under rest as well as under conditions of physical loads and psychic stress were examined with the help of a radiobiotelemetry device of own construction, which corresponds to a combination of traditional radiotelemetry and tape storage. In 81.4% of the patients with hitherto unclarified disturbances of the cardiac rhythm telemetry obtained their qualitative clarification. In 50% of all cases with classical angina pectoris symptomatology the ischaemic heart disease was verified by determination of the usual criterias of ECG at the telemetry stripe. Of these 50% only 7 patients had no arrhythmia. In 57.5% of all examined patients with pacemakers of permanent frequency we could prove a considerable parasystoly in load by telemetry. 9 patients with R-demand-pacemakers became evident by triggering defects in load. During the psychoanalytic examination we registered extrasystoles in 25%, apart from this once developed a pancardiac asystolism. The radiobiotelemetry is a valuable completion of the well-known methods of load.
