Although three types of cells are known to exist in glomeruli in vivo, it is not clear whether the same is true of glomerular cells in vitro. The outgrowth from the cultured glomeruli was continuously monitored with time-lapse cinemicroscopy until the glomerular tissues completely disappeared. The results clearly indicated that only two types of cells arise from the glomeruli in vitro, epithelial (E cell) and fibroblastic (M cell). A cell line of M cells was established that showed relatively constant morphologic characteristics as compared with the M cells in primary cultures. Morphologic evidence was obtained indicating that M cells produce GBM-like materials and collagen fibers with clearly visible periodicity.

The EEG findings in 25 children with moyamoya disease were studied. Characteristic findings such as posterior slow, centrotemporal slow (CT slow), "rebuildup" after the end of hyperventilation, and sleep spindle depression were observed. Posterior slow activity was mainly observed in the EEGs examined within a short period (mean, 10 months) after onset, CI slow activity after a longer period (mean,, 28 months), and a diffuse low-voltage pattern after these periods (mean, 56 months). Buildup after the end of hyperventilation, which we refer to as "rebuildup," was discovered in more than half of the cases.
Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and calcitonin were assayed in 8 patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid (MCT) and 14 unaffected family members, from 4 pedigrees of Sipple's syndrome and one pedigree with inherited MCT. Serum CEA ranged from 5.4 to 44.5 ng/ml in the patients, but less than 2.5 ng/ml in the unaffected. This is in contrast with retinoblastoma and cancer family syndrome, where not only the patients but also unaffected family members show high serum CEA, and cytoplasmic or selective maternal inheritance of serum CEA level is presumed. In inheritable MCT, serum CEA increases in association with the development of MCT, and serum CEA level per se is not inherited.
Elastin was extracted from human aortic plaque and adjacent grossly normal intima by the following methods: (1) 0.1 N NaOH at 100 degrees C, (2) hot NaOH and 0.2 M EDTA, (3) 5 M guanidine--HCl and collagenase, (4) guanidine--collagenase and dithioerythritol--urea--sodium dodecyl sulfate, (5) guanidine--collagenase and EDTA, (6) 10% NaCl and collagenase, and (7) NaCl--collagenase and EDTA. All elastin samples contained small amounts of carbohydrate and hydroxyproline. The lipid content of non-plaque intimal elastin samples was small (2--3%), whereas it increased to 4--6% in plaque intima. The lipid composition of elastin preparations varied significantly with the extraction procedure. Elastin from plaque intima contained significantly more cholesterol (50--60%) and less triglyceride and phospholipid than elastin of non-plaque intima (30--50% cholesterol). The contents of free and esterified cholesterol were comparable in all preparations. The main phospholipid in all samples was sphingomyelin, which comprised between 50 and 80% of the total phospholipid. Compared with NaOH-purified elastin, the other elastin samples were characterized by an increased phosphatidyl--choline content, while they all contained an almost equal amount of phosphatidylethanolamine. In elastin samples from plaque intima, the polar amino acids were increased, whereas cross-linking amino acids were decreased. The polarity and hydroxyproline content of elastin samples were slightly decreased after treatment with EDTA or dithioerythritol--urea--sodium dodecyl sulfate.
Attempts were made to isolate mycoplasmas from the uterine cervix of infertile women and normal pregnant and nonpregnant women to investigate the relationship of genital mycoplasma infection to infertility. Ureaplasma urealyticum was demonstrated in 63% of patients with infertility, 68% of normal pregnant women, and 62% of normal nonpregnant women. The incidence of Mycoplasma hominis infection was found to be noticeably lower, with corresponding isolation rates of 10%, 11%, and 6%, respectively. The differences in rate of isolation for U. urealyticum and for M. hominis among the three groups did not reach statistical significance. During a follow-up period of more than 12 months without any treatment for mycoplasma infection in the infertile cases, 11 women (27.5%) became pregnant. These included 7 (28%) of 25 women with positive U. urealyticum cultures. The results demonstrate a fairly high incidence of female genital infection with U. urealyticum which, as the data would indicate, cannot be directly associated with infertility.
Intractable ascites has been accompanied by significant jaundice in some patients. In such cases, a newly developed synthetic resin, AR-1, has been successfully employed to reduce excess bilirubin from the ascitic fluid. This resin has proved to be excellent compared with XAD-2, XAD-7 and activated charcoal, for removal of bilirubin from the plasma and ascitic fluid in our experiments. A column containing 100 ml of AR-1 is inserted in the drip infusion line between the modified ascitic fluid reservoir in the Autoascit device and the patient. This method has been used in 7 cases of intractable ascites associated with advanced gastric, pancreatic, hepatic, rectal and ovarian cancers. The column has sufficient capacity to adsorb excess bilirubin from the modified ascitic fluid. Other biochemical parameters were eseentially unchanged from pre-column values.
