Teaching history of medicine at Russian medical schools: past, present, and future.

Teaching history of medicine at Russian medical schools has a long tradition. It always reflected the general political situation in the country. The present program has been approved by the Ministry of Health 10 years ago. History of medicine is an obligatory subject taught at the first or second year of medical school. The course usually has 40 hours, equally split between lectures and seminars, and the program is focused on Russian medicine. Here we analyze the existing textbooks on the history of medicine and their drawbacks (ideologization, inventing of national priorities in medical discoveries, and avoiding the 20th-century medicine). To improve teaching of the history of medicine, longer courses and written exams are needed. There is also an evident need of writing a new textbook on the history of medicine.

[Argasid tick lysozyme action on HEp-2 cells].

The cytotoxic effect on Argasidae lysozyme was shown on a model of cell line HEp-2 in comparison to egg lysozyme. The lysozyme was obtained from homogenates of Ornithodoros papillipes of subfamily Ikodoidea. The lysozyme in concentrations of 300 and 500 gamma/ml had a cytotoxic effect, while in doses of 50 and 100 gamma/ml it has no such activity. The cells of line FL were not sensitive to the above concentrations of the lysozyme. In concentrations of 500 gamma/ml and higher the egg lysozyme had an analogous cytotoxic effect on the cells of line Hep-2. The comparative study of the cariogrammes of the cell monolayer treated with the Argasidae and egg lysozymes, as well as the study of the level of 3H-thimidine incorporation into the cell DNA showed the absence of the preparations effect of the mitotic activity of the cells and DNA synthesis by them.

[Study of the dynamics of human serum albumin by coherent Rayleigh dispersion of Mossbauer radiation].

The measurements of angle dependencies of total and elastic Rayleigh scattering of Mossbauer radiation intensities have been performed for human serum albumin (HSA) with hydration degrees h = 0.13 and h = 0.4. The extended model was developed for calculating the inelastic intensity of Rayleigh scattering. Original data for HSA and published data on met-Mb were fitted within the frame of this model. The best agreement with experiment was obtained when two types of intraglobular motions were taken into account: individual motions of small side-chain groups and cooperative (mechanical) motions of segments (most probable alpha-helices). Long-range correlated motions are essential at low hydration degree. The possibilities of application of the coherent version of RSMS technique are described.
