Urine samples from two patients with the Lowe syndrome were analyzed for sialic acid and mucopolysaccharides. The sialic acid content, relative to the creatinine content, was 4--5 times higher in these patients' urine than in normal urine. Most of the sialic acid was found in unidentified glycoproteins of high molecular weight, but the levels of sialyllactose and free sialic acid were also elevated about 2 fold. A most remarkable finding was the excretion of undersulfated chrondroitin sulfate A without other mucopolysaccharides normally occurring in urine. It is suggested that a disorder in sulfation of mucopolysaccharides is etiologically implicated in the Lowe syndrome.

Seven male Japanese children with chronic granulomatous disease were given sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SMX-TMP) for recurrent pyogenic infections, most of which had proved difficult to control with other antibiotics. With continous treatment the children remained free of infections severe enough to necessitate hospitalization, except on one occasion. Serious complications, including hematological disorders, never occurred during therapy and there were no changes in leukocyte function during therapy. These results indicate that SMX-TMP should be considered in the treatment of bacterial infections associated with chronic granulomatous disease.

Superoxide dismutase activity of the human blood cells was determined by the capacity to inhibit nitrite formation from hydroxylammonium chloride. Relationship between percentage of nitrite formation and amount of purified human erythrocyte superoxide dismutase was plotted on conventional graph paper, double log and logit papers. A comparison of the results showed that a linear relationship was obtained only with the logit paper, and thus a more accurate and simple estimation of the activity can be made on a single determination of the specimens.

1-Deamidino-, 3-deamidino- and 1,3-di(deamidino)dihydrostreptomycin (1, 2, 3) were prepared by treatment of dihydrostreptomycin (DHSM) with ammonia at 100 degrees C. The 3-guanidino group of DHSM is suggested to be more important than the 1-guanidino group for the antibacterial activity of DHSM. 1-N-[(S)-4-Amino-2-hydroxybutyryl) and 1-N-[(S)-4-guanidino-2-hydroxybutyryl] derivatives (4, 6) of 1-deamidinodihydrostreptomycin were futher prepared.
