Bioactive polymers: in vitro and in vivo study of controlled release neomycin.

Neomycin is coupled on xanthan-a polysaccharide of microbial biosynthesis produced by Xanthomonas campestris-through ionic complexation. The kinetics of neomycin release, in vitro, at pH = 8.2 is studied. A controlled release of neomycin, following a zero order kinetics is observed, regardless of the eluent flow. Neomycin complexed on xanthan, administered in a unique daily dose to patients suffering from dysentery in the 100 cases taken in study, has shown a high clinical efficiency as compared with the treatments with ampicillin or furazolidone, administered for 5-10 days or longer.

Epidemic outbreak of Coxsackie virus meningitis. Note I. Clinico-epidemiological features.

An epidemic outbreak of viral meningitis mainly caused by Coxsackie B3 virus is described. Characteristic of the outbreak was the involvment of a large number of infants under 1 year of age (about 1/4 of the total number of cases) and the elevated incidence of encephalitis symptoms, as compared with the meningitis outbreak caused by echovirus 4 in 1973.

[Effectiveness of repeated antibiotic or chemotherapeutic treatments on Shigella carrier states].

A group of 39 former dysentery patients, who continued to excrete Shigella bacteria after a first cure of antibiotics when full clinical recovery was obtained, were treated differentially under bacteriological control. The carrier state was still extent in 7% of the cases after three antibiotic or chemotherapeutical cures. No direct relation was found between the sensitivity of Shigella to chemotherapeutics and the level of the carrier state. Although treated already in the acute stage with adequate antibiotics, resistance to a second therapeutical attempt was recorded in a proportion of 33%. It is considered useless to repeat the antibiotic or chemotherapeutical cures in the treatment of convalescent carriers because of the low efficiency and the biological and economical disadvantages.

[Acute nosocomial bacterial meningitis. Apropos 27 cases].

Our series includes 27 patients with nosocomial meningitis (22 post neurosurgery and 5 post spinal puncture) of whom 15 with stated etiology (gram-negative bacilli and staphylococcus aureus in equal shares). Under the treatment with chloramphenicol + rifampicin + gentamicin a cure was obtained in 22 cases, improvement in 3 cases and 2 patients died.
