Enzyme immunoassay of neocarzinostatin using beta-galactosidase as label.

A novel convenient procedure was introduced for enzyme labelling of neocarzinostatin (NCS) with beta-D-galactosidase using a new hetero-bifunctional reagent N-(gamma-maleimidobutyryloxy) succinimide (GMBS). With the enzyme labelled NCS and a rabbit anti-NCS serum which was elicited in a rabbit immunized with NCS in complete Freund's adjuvant, a highly sensitive enzyme immunoassay which can quantify a femto mol order NCS was developed. Accuracy and precision of the assay as well as a comparison with the immunodiffussion method were studied with satisfactory results. This enzyme immunoassay of NCS was applicable to monitoring serum NCS levels of patients in clinical treatment of the antitumor agent.

[Airway response to short-term inhalation of NO2, O3 and their mixture in healthy men (author's transl)].

One hour inhalation of 0.7 ppm (1.32 mg/m3) of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), 0.7 ppm (1.4 mg/m3) of ozone (O3), and their mixture, 0.5 ppm (0.9 mg/m3) of NO2 and 0.5 ppm (1.0 mg/m3) of O3, and sham inhalation were conducted in five healthy male volunteers through mouth breathing using a multipurpose inhalation apparatus. Airway response was measured by specific airway conductance (Gaw/Vtg) and maximum expiratory flow rate at 50 and 25 percent forced vital capacity (Vmax50, Vmax25). Evaluations by analysis of variance revealed: no significant effect of inhalation of NO2 alone, slight significant transient decrease of Vmax50 in inhalation of O3 along (0.1 greater than p greater than 0.05), and slight reversible decrease of Gaw/Vtg and Vmax50 in inhalation of NO2 and O3 in combination (0.1 greater than p greater than 0.05). As their variations were within the range of normal diurnal change, these results were considered to be non-adverse effects.

Ventilatory response to CO2 rebreathing at rest in the ama.

Ventilatory response to CO2 in the Ama (Kachido) was determined by the CO2 rebreathing method in the beginning (March) and during (September) harvest season. It was found that mean slopes of the ventilatory response curve in March and September were 0.76 and 0.73 liters/(min.m2.mmHg), respectively, this difference being insignificant.

Difference in the mechanism of emotion in Japanese and Westerner.

The author found that cerebral hemisphere dominance of steady-state vowels as well as human emotional and natural sounds are different between the Japanese and the Westerner; the Japanese shows a verbal hemisphere dominance, while the Westerner shows a non-verbal hemisphere dominance. He brought forward the theory of mental structure and vowels stating that such a difference in the brain related to emotional activities forms the starting point of mental structure and culture. In this study the author confirmed the above hypothesis by emotional stimulation of human olfaction.

[Chrysotile fiber count in asbestos-cement board plants (author's transl)].

An asbestos fiber counting trial has been conducted in 19 asbestos-cement board plants throughout Japan, based on the phase-contrast microscopic count on membrane filter samples. In the four working places, i.e., bag carrying-in, bag opening, board cutting and shipping, airborne chrysotile fiber counts in 1 cm3 of air, the geometric mean and standard deviation were 1.86 (1.73), 3.87 (3.01), 2.34 (2.59) and 1.26 (2.17) respectively. Mean size distribution (geometrical length) of the fiber in bag opening and board cutting were 8.91 micrometers (sigmag 2.88) and 5.51 micrometers (sigmag 1.22) respectively by measuring on the magnified photomicrographs. As the clearing agent of filters, dimethyl phthalate with diethyl oxalate containing dissolved filter material was used.

Ultrastructural studies of human acute pancreatitis.

The pancreatic tissue from a patient with acute hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis was studied by routine electron microscopic observation. The remarkable change was the destruction of pancreatic acinar units. 1) The acinar lumen was dilated with filling of fibrillar materials, which occasionally contained degenerated cellular components or neutrophils. 2) Accumulations of fibrillar materials were present at the periphery in the acinar cells, especially depositted thickly at the basal portion. 3) In some acinar cells, the accumulation of fibrillar materials occupied the entire acinar cell, accompanied by disappearance of luminal margin, and the intracellular fibrillar materials were mixed with acinar lumen contents. 4) The acinar units which showed above described changes had almost intact basal lamina.
