[A statistical approach to pruritus senilis].

The purpose of this study is to analyse the cause of itching and explore the relationships between pruritus senilis and various stimuli. Sample of 132 men and 238 women with ages ranging from 60 to 96 years were used in our study. Pruritus senilis is not significantly related to cosmetics and soap. Nevertheless, statistically significant correlations were found between pruritus senilis and physical stimuli (e. g., warmth, coldness, dryness). These observations could suggest that pruritus senilis is caused by changes of temperature.

Excretion, distribution and metabolism of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene in rats.

1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene (TCB) labeled with C-14 was given perorally to rats at a dosage of 50 mg/kg for excretion and distribution studies. About 66% and 17% of the oral dose was excreted in the urine and feces, respectively, within 7 days. Trapped radioactivity in the expired air amounted to 2.1% of the dose, but production of labeled carbon dioxide was negligible. Tissue residues were evenly distributed throughout the organs and tissues examined, except for the adipose tissue which consistently had a little higher concentration. The urinary, fecal and expiratory metabolites were identified. Free 2,4,5- and 2,3,5-trichlorophenol (TCP) and their conjugates were mainly detected in the urine. 5- or 6-Sulfhydryl, methylthio, methylsulfoxide and methylsulfone derivatives of TCB were also detected as minor metabolites. Dichlorobenzenes and unchanged TCB were confirmed in the expired air. Reductive dechlroination seems to be catalysed by intestinal microflora enzymes.

Fat in the dural sinus.

Fat density in the dural sinus on computed tomography (CT) is described in eight cases. Of the eight cases, five had fat deposit in the torcular Herophili, and three in the superior sagittal sinus. This finding was incidentally found by CT and there was no common underlying disease in these cases. It is suggested that this finding represents normal adipose tissue in the dural sinus.

Effects of thiabendazole on the mouse limb-bud organ and cell in culture.

In relation to the mouse limb malformations caused by thiabendazole (TBZ), we tested the teratogenicity of TBZ in a mouse limb bud culture system. TBZ interfered with the development of the explants under our experimental conditions. Comparison of the protein and DNA content of the forelimbs of TBZ-treated and control animals showed that TBZ tended to reduce the amounts of DNA more than those of protein. Studies on the biosynthesis of proteoglycan as an index of limb chondrogenesis demonstrated that TBZ impaired its biosynthesis in the limb bud cell system. These results may indicate that TBZ directly causes the abnormalities in mouse limb development. The site and mechanism of teratogenic action of TBZ are also discussed.

Plasma and erythrocyte copper, zinc, manganese and magnesium concentrations in Wilson's disease.

Plasma copper was significantly reduced in Wilson's disease with decreased ceruloplasmin levels, while there was no significant difference in erythrocyte copper levels between Wilson's disease and controls. Mean zinc and manganese levels in plasma were increased in Wilson's disease, but these differences were not significant. Mean magnesium level in plasma was normal. The levels of these metals in erythrocytes showed no difference between Wilson's disease and controls. Our results suggest that the abnormal copper level in plasma is not due to the primary metabolic defects, but is probanly due to the level of the binding proteins in plasma to this metal, ceruloplasmin, in Wilson's disease.

Pupillary elongation after anterior chamber lens implantation.

Pupillary elongation was seen along the lens loop in four of 12 eyes that had Simcoe-SAC3 lenses and two of six eyes with Kelman-MT3 lenses. Gonioscopy, especially in the eyes with the Simcoe lens, showed the iris overriding a lens loop, with goniosynechias and scattered pigmentation in the angle. Argon laser photocoagulation of the overriding iris was ineffective.

[The influence of biliary diversion on canine gastric acid secretion and gut hormones].

The effect of biliary reconstruction on gastric acid secretion and gut hormones was studied. Canine models undergoing either surgical biliary diversion or jejunal exclusion were compared and the following results were obtained. The acid output from Heidenhain pouch after test meal loading remained in the same levels in the cholecystoduodenostomy (CD) group, the Thiry-Vella's fistula (TVF) group and the cholecystojejunostomy (CJ) group compared to the control group, while it decreased in the cholecystoileostomy group. The integrated gastrin response after test meal loading decreased in the CI group. The integrated total GLI response remained unchanged in the CD group and CJ group, but markedly elevated in the TVF group and CI group. The integrated GIP response decreased in the TVF group and no response was obtained in the CI group. The integrated GI response was almost the same in all groups. In conclusion, gut hormone secretion was found to be affected by jejunal exclusion and most strongly influenced by biliary diversion into the ileum. The present study also suggested that enteroglucagon had enterogastrone effect and that compensating mechanism existed among various gut hormones.

[Histopathological studies of the osteophytes and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in the cervical spine].

To obtain information on ossification around the vertebral body of the cervical spine, we carried out histopathological investigation on 30 autopsy cases. The results were as follows; Intervertebral discs were untouched, anterior osteophytes developed along the anterior longitudinal ligament and they corresponded to anterior spur in spondylosis deformans. Posterior osteophytes around the posterior edges of vertebral body resulted in intervertebral insufficiency, and corresponded to hypertrophic spur in osteochondrosis. Histopathological findings of hyperostotic anterior osteophytes were similar to anterior osteophytes, but in the former there were advanced osteophyte formations. In OPLL of the segmental type, intervertebral discs were degenerated, and ossified mass did not involve the posterior longitudinal ligament of the parts of discs. With regard to morphological appearance and the tendency of increasing ossification, OPLL of the continuous type was similar to hyperostotic anterior osteophytes, without involvement of intervertebral disc. OPLL of the distinctly continuous type was differentiated from that of the segmental type.
