Calcium flux and binding in the aortic smooth muscle from the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

There was no significant difference in the tissue calcium content between spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and normotensive rat aortae. 45Ca uptake was significantly greater, whereas 45Ca influx was significantly less in SHR than in control aortae. There was no difference in 45Ca efflux in SHR and control tissues. 45Ca influx in both SHR and control tissues was increased by potassium, not increased by norepinephrine and inhibited by Co++, Mn++ and La+++ (all 0.5 mM). Both SHR and control aortae were equally inhibited by Mn++ and Co++ (0.1 mM). There was no difference in the 45Ca uptake by microsome fraction from both SHR and control tissue. These data indicate some differences in the translocation of Ca++ at the cellular level in SHR and control aortae.

Changes of enzyme activities in spleen lymphocytes from tumor-bearing rats.

The induction of concomitant immunity was studied in Donryu strain rats with Yoshida ascites sarcoma cells. The changes of enzyme activity in spleen lymphocytes were also examined in normal and tumor-bearing rats. The concomitant immunity was detected 1 week after transplantation of tumor cells. Extended metastases were found 2 weeks after transplantation. The enzyme activities of ATPase and acid phosphatase were definitely higher than that of normal rat 1 week after the transplantation but decreased to lower level than normal 2 weeks later. On the other hand, alkaline phosphatase activity increased 3 times at 1 week after the transplantation and remained at the same level even at 2 weeks later.

Flow dichroic spectra of tobacco mosaic virus and their protein assemblies.

Ultraviolet flow dichroisms of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), TMV-RNA and TMV-protein were measured using three strains of TMV. 1. Large positive dichroisms were observed with three strains of TMV, namely ordinary, bean form of bean, and tomato strains (TMV-OM, TMV-B and TMV-T, respectively) at about 255, 276, 284 and 290 nm. The positive dichroisms were confirmed with reconstituted protein assemblies of TMV-OM and TMV-B at about 276, 284 and 290 nm where tyrosine and tryptophan residues of these proteins contribute. These results show that the electronic transition moments of their base groups and aromatic groups are nearly parallel to the polymer axis. It is suggested that there is a strong interaction between the base groups of RNA and aromatic groups of amino acid residues in TMV. 2. A small negative dichroism was observed near 296-300 nm with intact TMV-OM and TMV-T and with the reconstituted protein polymer of TMV-OM. But negative dichroism was not observed either with the intact virus or the protein assembly of TMV-B. 3. Isolated RNA from TMV-OM, TMV-B and TMV-T showed no dichroism. The configuration of RNA in TMV appears to be imposed on it by its packing with the protein.
