Twenty-nine patients with systemic scleroderma (SSD), whose lymphocytes significantly responded to a scleroderma-inducing glycosaminoglycan-associated antigen (stimulation index greater than or equal to 1.7), were separated into the two groups of marked and moderate responses, according to the mitogenic response of their peripheral lymphocytes. A marked response, with a [3H]-thymidine uptake of +3 SD over the mean of unstimulated SSD lymphocytes, was seen in severely affected patients with a high OKT4/OKT8 ratio. In contrast, the lymphocytes of patients with benign disease responded moderately to the antigen, showing lower thymidine uptake by both unstimulated and stimulated lymphocytes. This latter group had a high frequency of elevated anti-nRNP antibody.

We examined the urinary iodine excretion of sedentary and physically active male university students in order to estimate the iodine intake of Japanese. Iodine excretion in sweat collected during treadmill exercise was also determined in different dietary iodine levels. The mean urinary iodine excretion of 5 sedentary students during 15 consecutive days was 357 micrograms/day (40-3,390). When high-iodine food, i.e. seaweed, was included in meals in only 22% of the total experimental days of 5 subjects, the urinary iodine excretion was high (1,106 micrograms/day, 298-3,390), but was low (153 micrograms/day, 40-441) when seaweeds were not consumed. An unexpectedly low mean urinary iodine excretion of 149 micrograms/day (50-393) was found in 10 rowing club students during 6 consecutive days of their summer training camp, probably being due to iodine losses in sweat; sweat iodine concentrations were about 37 micrograms per liter, regardless of serum and urinary iodine levels modulated by the dietary iodine level. The present data indicate that the iodine intake of Japanese depends on the amount of seaweed consumption and that it is not necessarily as high as expected from the data obtained in the 1960s. Moreover, our findings indicate the importance of taking account of iodine loss in sweat in the evaluation of iodine nutrition for physically active persons working in hot and humid environments.

In order to clarify the gastric electrical and contractile activity after various types of surgery, 32 mongrel dogs equipped with bipolar electrodes on the anterior wall of the stomach underwent various types of operations. The basic electric rhythm (BER) frequency after middle segmental gastrectomy (MSG) with SPV was markedly reduced, but gradually returned to show synchronization with that of the preoperative value. The propagation velocity of the BER decreased. Dysrhythmias were observed to occur in high incidence in the early postoperative period, but were transient occurrences. High-frequency-dysrhythmias were observed in cases of MSG with pyloroplasty (PP). PP increased the frequency of dysrhythmias probably due to deranging the electric insulator of the pyloric ring. In cases of upper segmental gastrectomy, the BER frequency didn't synchronize with that of the preoperative state even in the late postoperative period. The gastric motility after MSG with SPV recovered in the late postoperative period, so the pyloric ring could be preserved. After massive distal small bowel resection, propagation velocity of the BER of the stomach were markedly decreased. Of the 5 gut hormones examined, only CCK correlated with the propagation velocity of the BER.

An application of L-thyroxine (T4) to bullfrog everted sinus-atrium preparations showed an acute negative chronotropic effect instead of a positive one in the chronic phase. The acute effect was dose dependent (7-70 microM) and the maximal negative chronotropic effect (about + 20% interval prolongation) was observed at 40 microM T4. The acute T4 effect on the cardiac interval consisted of two stages: an initial peak (about 5 min) accompanied by a transient increase in contractility, and a delayed peak (about 50 min) accompanied by a decrease in contractility to the control level. Pretreatment with TEA (15 mM) suppressed the initial T4 effect on the cardiac interval but enhanced the delayed one. In contrast the metabolic inhibitors NaCN (0.5 mM) or DNP (10 microM) abolished the delayed T4 effect while the initial one remained. Furthermore, pretreatment with Cd2+ (10 microM) suppressed antagonistically the initial T4 effect and inhibited the delayed one. These results suggest that the initial effects of T4 were accompanied by a transient increase in intracellular Ca2+ and the delayed effects of T4 were accompanied by acceleration of intracellular metabolism.
Cefminox (CMNX, MT-141), a new cephamycin antibiotic, was studied in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, and the following results were obtained. The absorption and the penetration of CMNX into pelvic dead space exudate were good. The mean peak serum level after single intravenous injection was 190.8 micrograms/ml. The level in pelvic dead space exudate reached a peak of 36.6 micrograms/ml 4 hours after an intravenous injection of 1 g and 6.5 micrograms/ml after 12 hours, thus the level over MIC against main pathogenic organisms was maintained for a long time. CMNX was administered against gyneco-obstetrical infections such as intrauterine, intrapelvic, adnexal infections and postoperative wound infections with daily dose of 2 g and was effective in 11 cases out of 12 cases (91.7%), and 81.8% of bacteriological effect was obtained. No side effect was observed. From the above results the usefulness of CMNX in the field of obstetrics and gynecology was suggested.
