Significance of fetography in prenatal diagnosis of limb-body wall complex (LBWC).

The diagnosis of limb body wall complex (LBWC) by ultrasonography does not usually present a problem. The major difficulty we found was severe oligohydramnios or a very complex relationship between the herniated viscera and the deformities. We performed fetography in a pregnant woman with fetal anterior abdominal wall defect at the 28th gestational week to show a peculiar structure of intrauterine membranes of LBWC, and we could obtain a successful prenatal diagnosis of LBWC.

Evaluation of delta-aminolaevulinic acid in blood of workers exposed to lead.

Exposure-effect and exposure-response relation between exposure to lead and delta-aminolaevulinic acid concentration in blood (ALA-B) were examined in 238 male workers exposed to lead. Concentrations of ALA-B ranged from 26 to 352 micrograms/l and lead concentrations in blood (Pb-B) from 7.1 to 86.0 micrograms/dl. Concentrations of ALA-B correlated closely with concentrations of Pb-B (r = 0.74), and increased ALA-B concentration occurred at Pb-B concentrations of around 30 micrograms/dl. Exposure-response curves indicated that the 50 percentile response doses were roughly 30, 40, and 50 micrograms/dl Pb-B when cut off points of ALA-B were set at 50, 60, and 70 micrograms/l respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of measurements of ALA-B concentrations for health screening were sufficiently high when the health based exposure limits of lead were set at 30-50 micrograms/dl. Moreover, a pronounced increase in ALA-B concentrations occurred when the inhibition rate of erythrocyte ALA dehydratase exceeded 85%. These findings suggest that ALA-B is a useful indicator for assessing the early effects of exposure to lead on haem biosynthesis.

Biological monitoring of workers exposed to acetone in acetate fibre plants.

Concentrations of acetone in urine, alveolar air, and blood were measured by gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection for 110 subjects occupationally exposed to acetone (mean 372 ppm) in three factories. Significant relations were found between the time weighted average environmental concentration and the concentration in the biological samples. The strongest correlation was between the concentration of acetone in urine and the degree of exposure (r = 0.71, 95% CI 0.64-0.77). This suggests that urinary acetone concentration is the best biological index of occupational exposure to acetone.

Effects of far-infrared radiation on lactation.

Massage and warm compresses to the breast have been commonly used for stimulating and/or increasing blood flow to the breasts, and for enhancing lactation consequently. However, more effective and easier remedies seem to be necessary. The vasodilating and warming effects of ceramics far-infrared radiation were studied. Based on the results obtained, the effect of a ceramic disc on lactation, attached to the breast skin, was evaluated in 27 puerperal women who had had poor lactation previously and in 36 with currently poor lactation monthly until weaning. Approximately 3/4 of these puerperal women enhanced lactation significantly one month after attachment and 1/2 of the women were able to breast-feed until weaning. Thus, we found that ceramics far-infrared radiation may be an effective remedy for enhancing lactation.

Significance of exercise and bed rest in pregnancy--study on the lying postures of gravidas during sleep (2).

For the purpose of determining the most reasonable lying posture for pregnant women, we investigated the lying positions of both 247 non-pregnant women and 302 pregnant women during sleep. As for the rate of each position during the entire period of observation, 33.2% of the non-pregnant women were in the supine position, 41.2% in the lateral position, 18.4% in Sims' position and 7.1% in the prone position. In the pregnant group, the rate of supine position, simple lateral position and Sims' position was 34.2%, 52.2% and 12.7%, respectively, but the rate of the prone position was limited to 0.8%. All of the gravidas assuming the prone position were at less than 16 weeks of gestation. Non-pregnant women could sleep in a variety of positions, but pregnant women could assume the prone position during sleep only in the stage when the abdomen is not yet prominent or distended. Pregnant women were restricted significantly, either consciously or unconsciously, with progress in gestation.

Effect of amniotic fluid volume on umbilical cord length.

To study effect of amniotic fluid volume on umbilical cord length, 939 pregnant women at 24-41 weeks of gestation, including 10 twin cases, 51 preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) and 70 premature delivery cases, were examined for their amniotic fluid volume within a week of delivery by the ultrasound procedure and these 949 newborns were also examined for umbilical cord length and incidence of fetal distress. In the polyhydramnios group (pocket size of more than 8 cm), 8 of 20 infants (40%) had longer cords and 6 infants (30%) had shorter cords, while only one of 49 infants (2%) with oligohydramnios (pocket size of less than 2 cm) had a longer cord and 36 infants (73.5%) had shorter cords than the mean cord length (+/- SD) of the normal group. The 20 twins had significantly shorter cords than those of the normal group (P less than 0.05) and the polyhydramnios group (P less than 0.01). The PROM group showed significantly higher incidence of oligohydramnios (P less than 0.05) and fetal distress (P less than 0.01), which suggests that intrauterine space availability is important for assuring fetal well-being.

[Studies on an outbreak of hepatitis A in an institution for the mentally retarded children].

The outbreak of hepatitis A occurred in an institution for the mentally retarded children in Bibai city. Hepatitis A virus infection was observed in 50 of 144 children who were sensitive to HAV (infection rate 34.7%). Clinical findings and severe liver dysfunction were seen in 30 of 50 cases and the rate of apparent infection was 60.0%. The route of infection was thought to be water-borne in bathing or contact infection in each room. Food-borne infection was excluded, as all children had eaten same food. Human serum globulin for protection against hepatitis A was administered and was effective to prevent the manifestation of hepatitis A. The rate of apparent infection was decreased 92.9% (26/28 cases) to 18.1% (4/22 cases) after administration.

[Characterization and analysis of antibodies against HBsAg produced by somatic cell hybrids].

Somatic cell hybrids which produced antibodies against HBsAg were established by fusing the splenocytes of BALB/c mice immunized with purified HBsAg and the myeloma cell line P3X63Ag8 using polyethylene glycol 1,000. Mouse ascites were obtained by inoculating 13 hybridoma clones, and 8 of them produced high PHA titer antibodies of 10(2) to 10(6) against HBsAg. These antibodies in ascites were analysed by way of Sephadex G-200 gel filtration, micro-Ouchterlony method and 2ME, DTT treatment. According to these analyses, one of these antibodies has belonged to IgM and the other 7 to IgG. By RPHA titration using tannic acid-treated SRBC coated with these antibodies, it was suggested that 2 clonal antibodies were against the common antigenic components of HBs subtypes and the other 5 against the component r. According to the results of RPHA test and PHA suppression test using these clonal antibodies and 116 samples of HBsAg positive sera in Hokkaido, one subtype of HBsAg was further classified into several groups. These antibodies will be valuable for many virological and serological investigation, for instance, for the detailed antigenic analyses of HBsAg and for searching a source of HBs infection containing feto-maternal infection.

[The prevalence of antibody to hepatitis A virus in different age groups of Hokkaido inhabitants (author's transl)].

Serum specimens drawn at random from Hokkaido inhabitants were tested for antibody to the hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) by radioimmunoassay. The prevalence in different age groups was as follows, cord blood and newborn infants 44.4%, under one year 0%, 1-9 years 5.3%, 10-19 years 0%, 20-29 years 9.1%, 30-39 years 80%, 40-49 years 90%, and over 50 years 100%. This survey confirmed that antibody against HAV could pass through placenta and HAV had been very common virus by the 1950's in Hokkaido.

Electronmicroscopic investigation of the flexibility of F-actin.

The contour lenghts and the end-to-end distances of a large number of F-actin filaments were measured in electronmicrographs. Preparation of F-actin for electron-microscopy was made at three different temperatures. The flexibility parameter or the elastic modulus for bending of F-actin was determined from the relation between the contour length and the end-to-end distance after statistical treatment. The value of the flexibility parameter obtained here showed good agreement with that obtained by the quasielastic light scattering at all temperatures examined. The flexibility of F-actin increased with raising temperature and with the binding of heavy meromyosin.
