Prevalence of non-cholera vibrios in cavum nasi and pharynx of ducks.

Investigations among ducks on ten different farms showed a high prevalence of Vibrio cholerae in cavum nasi and Pharynx after the ducks were admitted to the open field. In no case was Vibrio cholerae isolated from ducks which had never been outside the houses. At least six serovars were isolated, 0:54 being the most prevalent. All the strains isolated produced a distinctive cytotoxic effect in YI adrenal cells and caused fluid accumulation in rabbit gut loops. Migratory birds were incriminated as the source of initial contamination.

Scanning electron microscope observation of the seminal vesicle in the Japanese monkey with special reference to intraluminal spermiophagy by macrophages.

The seminal vesicle of the adult Japanese monkey was observed by scanning electron microscopy. A number of spermatozoa are found scattered on the luminal surface. Some of them are normal in appearance, while others disintegrated. The epithelial cells bulging slightly into the lumen are devoid of cilia, but provided with diffusely distributed microvilli. The fracture surface reveals that the epithelium of the seminal vesicle consists of columnar epithelial cells with secretory activity and occasional basal cells, in accordance with the finding obtained by transmission electron microscope in other mammals. The most striking observation of this study is the occurrence of a number of macrophages lying on the epithelium of the seminal vesicle. They also are seen to engulf the disintegrated spermatozoa in bulk. The intraluminal macrophages observed may serve to dispose of spermatozoa which have migrated into the seminal vesicle for some unknown reason.

On the serology of Plesiomonas shigelloides.

The serology of 87 strains of Plesiomonas shigelloides was studied. Thirty O antigenic groups and 11 H antigens were defined within the 87 strains, and an antigenic schema consisting of 40 serovars was established. Some O antigens of P. shigelloides were identical or closely related to those of some Shigella serovars.

Scanning electron microscopic observation of spermiophage cell within the lumen of the epididymal duct of the vasectomized Japanese monkey (Macacus fuscatus).

The spermiophagic process by intraluminal macrophages in the epididymal ducts of the vasectomized Japanese monkey was well visualized with scanning electron microscope. The fragments of disintegrated spermatozoa were seen in the phase enveloped in bulk by flap-like cytoplasmic extensions or in the phase ingested within the cytoplasm.

Natural occurence of a biopolymer, poly (adenosine diphosphate ribose).

Evidence for the natural occurrence of poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose) in vivo was obtained using a sensitive radioimmunoassay and poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose) glycohydrolase, which specifically hydrolyzes poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose). Calf thymus, liver, kidney, brain, pancreas and spleen contained poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose). Naturally occurring poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose) in calf thymus is composed of molecules of various chain lengths, like that synthesized by an in vitro system. Calf thymus was estimated to contain about 0.02 microgram/mg DNA of poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose).
