Orofacial pain increases mRNA level for galanin in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis of the rat.
The changes of preprogalanin mRNA levels in the superficial dorsal horn neurons (laminae I and II) of the trigeminal nucleus caudalis in response to orofacial pain induced by the injection of 5% formalin into the lips of rats was investigated and compared to those of preproenkephalin A mRNA and preprodynorphin mRNA in the same region by means of in situ hybridization histochemistry. Rapid and marked increases of preprogalanin and preprodynorphin mRNA were observed on the side of the injection, but the increase of preproenkephalin A mRNA level was less pronounced than that of the other two mRNAs, indicating that these peptides have different roles in the dorsal horn analgesic mechanism and that galanin, in addition to opioid peptides, may have a highly specific role in this mechanism.

Characterization of telomeric oligonucleotides: fidelity of repetitive nucleotide sequences.
To clarify the reasons for the high fidelity of repetitive telomeric sequences, a series of d(TTXGGG)4 (X: A, G, C, and T) were synthesized and characterized by UV absorption, CD, chemical modification, and resistance to nucleases. d(TTCGGG)4, which is lacking in nature, has similar structural stability and resistance to nucleases, compared with d(TTAGGG)4, which is widely present at the telomeres of many organisms. d(TTGGGG)4 is the most stable as a result of formation of the four G-quartet layers in the presence of potassium ion.

Surgical correction of pseudoaneurysm of the extracranial carotid artery: the usefulness of retrograde cerebral perfusion--a case report.
Although a pseudoaneurysm of the common carotid artery is not encountered frequently, its surgical treatment is technically challenging. A case is reported of a large pseudoaneurysm of the right common carotid artery in a 45-year-old woman, presenting with respiratory distress, following a wound infection 3 months after tracheoplasty. Instead of a vascular shunt, deep hypothermic circulatory arrest with retrograde cerebral perfusion was used for protection of the brain against hypoxia during the arterial reconstruction. The pseudoaneurysm was easily corrected with an autologous saphenous vein, without any hazardous dissection through the dense fibrosis around the fragile pseudoaneurysm, under circulatory arrest.

PAF-induced eosinophilic and basophilic differentiation in human hematopoietic precursor cells.
PAF enhances the maturation and differentiation of basophils and eosinophils from hematopoietic precursor cells. These enhancing effects of PAF were inhibited by PAF antagonists, such as WEB-2086. Also, the coexistence of antibodies to IL-1 and IL-3 markedly inhibited the PAF-induced differentiation. Human recombinant IL-1 alpha/beta induced differentiation of hematopoietic precursor cells into both cell lines, and this was completely inhibited by the coexistence of antibody to IL-3. Interleukin 1 beta and IL-3 were detected in the cultured supernatant of PAF-stimulated mononuclear leukocytes obtained from human umbilical blood. From these findings, it is suggested that PAF triggers the production of these growth factors via specific receptors, and the growth factors produced may directly cause the differentiation and maturation of the precursor cells.

A comparison of swine abdominal temperature distribution after heating with BSD-1000, an annular phased array system (APAS), and Thermotron RF-8.
External hyperthermia for deep-seated tumors is still a difficult problem. We compared the abdominal temperature distribution in a pig after heating with BSD-1000, an annular phased array system (APAS), and Thermotron RF-8. Thirty elastic tubes were inserted into the upper abdomen of the pig and a thermocouple was inserted into each of the tubes. After heating, these thermocouples were moved at 1-cm intervals and the three-dimensional temperature distribution was obtained. The temperature distribution after heating with APAS and Thermotron RF-8 was compared by using the distribution on the longitudinal center line of each sagittal plane at 1-cm intervals from the center. The temperature was much higher and its distribution more homogeneous with APAS than Thermotron RF-8.

Surgical management of intracavitary cardiac tumors. A review of fifteen patients and current status in Japan.
Fifteen patients with intracavitary cardiac tumors were operated on at the Kobe University Hospital between September 1977 and January 1984. Three of the patients were men and twelve were women. They ranged in age from 9 to 75 years. Their symptoms were chest pain, dyspnea, cough, palpitation and syncope. Definite diagnosis was confirmed by echo- and cineangiocardiography. There were 14 benign tumors consisting of 13 myxomas, one leiomyoma and one malignant myxosarcoma. The left atrium was the most common chamber involved (12 instances), followed by the right atrium (3). Surgery was performed in all cases under cardiopulmonary bypass with moderate hypothermia and cold crystalloid cardioplegia. Tumors were removed en bloc at the base with their attachment to the atrial septum or free wall in all cases. Three patients underwent concomitant mitral annuloplasty or mitral commissurotomy. Two cases with left atrial myxoma died postoperatively: one case associated with mitral annuloplasty died of congestive heart failure due to newly developed chordal rupture two months after surgery, and the other died of congestive heart failure 13 months after the first operation. Re-excision for recurrence of the myxosarcoma in the left atrium was performed in the latter case as a second surgical procedure. The remaining 13 cases with benign tumors are doing well and are without recurrence. From these favorable results, surgical intervention should be recommended prior to the occurrence of heart failure and severe complications such as coronary or peripheral embolism whenever cardiac tumors are detected by non-invasive echocardiography and cineangiocardiography.
