[Connective tissue of the human fallopian tube mucosa--polarization microscopic detection of collagen using Solaminrot 4B].

The Picrosirius-polarization method was applied to the selective morphological collagen detection in the human uterine tube. Solaminrot 4B (VEB Chemiekombinat Bitterfeld) was used as dyestuff which enhances the normal birefringency of collagen fibrous material in tissue sections. The results show that the connective tissue of the lamina propria mucosae consists of collagen fibres, namely considerably. The mucosal folds of uterine tubes of younger individuals contain delicate, weaker birefringent fibres stained yellowish-red and red-orange. The folds of oviducts of ageing individuals composed of compact, strong birefringent collagen fibrous material stained intensely red, red-orange, and yellow. This is characteristic of organs in the pre- and postmenopausal periods and in the senium. The findings suggest that the fibrous structures detected selectively in the oviductal mucosa by combinative method of Picrosolamin-staining and polarization microscopy are distinct collagen fibres. The delicate, weaker birefringent fibres could correspond with collagen type III and the thicker, stronger birefringent ones could represent collagen type I.

A mycoplasma high-affinity transport system and the in vitro invasiveness of mouse sarcoma cells.

FS9 mouse sarcoma cells were previously shown to be highly invasive when confronted with chicken heart fibroblasts using Abercrombie's confronted explant technique. This invasion could be inhibited by addition to the assay of Fab fragments of a monoclonal antibody directed against p37, a protein associated with the surface of FS9 cells. We have cloned and sequenced the gene for p37. We show that it originates from Mycoplasma hyorhinis and that UGA is a tryptophan codon in this organism. We present evidence that the p37 gene is part of an operon encoding two additional proteins which are highly similar to components of the periplasmic binding-protein-dependent transport systems of Gram-negative bacteria, and we suggest that p37 is part of a homologous, high-affinity transport system in M. hyorhinis, a Gram-positive bacterium. We discuss the influence of p37 and M. hyorhinis on contact inhibition of locomotion of mammalian cells.

Evidence for high affinity binding-protein dependent transport systems in gram-positive bacteria and in Mycoplasma.

Gram-negative bacteria are surrounded by two membranes. In these bacteria, a class of high affinity transport systems for concentrating substrates from the medium into the cell, involves a binding protein located between the outer and inner membranes, in the periplasmic region. These 'periplasmic binding-proteins' are thought to bind the substrate in the vicinity of the inner membrane, and to transfer it to a complex of inner membrane proteins for concentration into the cytoplasm. We report evidence leading us to propose that a Gram-positive bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and a mycoplasma, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, which are surrounded by a single membrane and have therefore no periplasmic region, possess an equivalent to the high affinity periplasmic binding-protein dependent transport systems, i.e. extra-cytoplasmic binding lipoprotein dependent transport systems. The 'binding lipoproteins' would be maintained at proximity of the inner membrane by insertion of their N-terminal glyceride-cysteine into this membrane.

Coronary hemodynamics during left and right coronary arteriography with an ionic and nonionic contrast medium.

The direct effects of ionic amidotrizoate (iodine content 370 mg/ml, osmolality 2.1 osmol/kg) and nonionic iopamidol (iodine content 370/ml, osmolality 0.8 osmol/kg) on the coronary circulation were intraindividually compared in 10 patients suffering from coronary heart disease. In accordance with a double-blind, crossover protocol, both contrast media were injected into the left and right coronary arteries (8 ml and 5 ml per injection, respectively). Injections of both dyes into the left coronary artery caused a similar decrease in heart rate. The prolongation in the QT interval was significantly greater after amidotrizoate (p less than 0.05). Systolic (p less than 0.01) and diastolic (p less than 0.05) aortic pressures decreased to a greater extent following amidotrizoate injection. Each contrast agent produced a similar increase in coronary sinus flow, but iopamidol resulted in a smaller decrease in coronary vascular resistance (p less than 0.05). After right coronary artery injections, both contrast media caused bradycardia and prolongation of the QT interval, a decrease in systolic and diastolic aortic pressure, a rise in coronary sinus flow, and a lowering of coronary vascular resistance. Though most changes were more pronounced following amidotrizoate injection, the differences in the ionic and the nonionic agent were not statistically significant. Thus, after selective coronary arteriography, both contrast media caused a transient drop in coronary vascular resistance and a rise in coronary sinus flow despite a decrease in aortic pressure. The effects of amidotrizoate were more marked, which might be attributed to the higher osmolality of this ionic contrast medium. Coronary hemodynamics, however, usually returned to baseline values within 1 minute.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Residues of active substances after consumption of contaminated food: status report on the evaluation of residues with examples of two drugs].

Pharmacokinetic models are presented for the computation of time courses of blood levels of drugs in man following the consumption of contaminated food. Mathematically, two linear systems of differential equations are set up for the donor organism (e.g., trout) and for the recipient, (e.g., man), where the first system generates the initial conditions for the second. Models of this kind are applied to the transfer of chloramphenicol to man via carp and trout (which had previously been administered this drug) and to the transfer of theophylline to infants via breast milk. Limiting concentration profiles are computed by constructing the most favourable and most adverse combinations of parameters with respect to drug elimination in both the donor and recipient organism.

The effect of balloon dilatation on post-stenotic myocardial perfusion before and after stimulation of coronary flow reserve: evaluation by the densitometric parameter 'mean rise time'.

From densitometric evaluation of digital subtraction cineangiocardiograms the parameter 'Mean Rise Time' (MRT), defined as the time from the onset of local myocardial contrast medium opacification to the point of maximal opacification can be derived; this parameter revealed a close correlation with the results on myocardial perfusion obtained by Thallium-201 scintigraphy. A prolonged 'Mean Rise Time' was indicative of an impairment of myocardial perfusion. We have developed a heart-phase gated real-time digitization procedure and computer-supported method for the densitometric estimation of the MRT to obtain information about the effect of coronary balloon dilatation on myocardial perfusion before and after stimulation of coronary flow reserve by Moxaverin. In 22 patients with single vessel coronary artery disease Moxaverin caused a significant prolongation of the post-stenotic MRT (2.3 +/- 1.2s (mean +/- s.d.) vs. 2.9 +/- 1.1s, p less than 0.05), while after successful dilatation of the obstructive lesion a significant shortening of the MRT was found after stimulation of the coronary flow reserve (2.5 +/- 1.2s vs. 1.9 +/- 0.9s, p less than 0.05). A highly significant decrease in MRT after Moxaverin was measured post-dilatation in comparison to the initial pre-dilatation results (2.9 +/- 1.1s vs. 1.9 +/- 0.9s, p less than 0.005); this shows that the effect of successful balloon dilatation on the post-stenotic myocardial perfusion can be described very well by this parameter. These results demonstrate that information about post-stenotic myocardial perfusion during interventional heart catheterization can be obtained from digital densitometry.

[The Ammann test, attempt at electrophysiologic verification].

The Ammann filter test is a subjective method of differentiating functional amblyopia from the organic type. An attempt was made to verify this subjective method by means of visual evoked responses. Good correlation was found with the results described in the literature, obtained by psychophysical examination.

[40 years' of the Goldmann perimeter].

For 40 years ophthalmologists all over the world have been using the Goldmann perimeter to examine visual fields by various methods. This paper describes and summarizes the constant improvements to the instrument, the development of accessories and attachments, and examination techniques that have been introduced over the years. The Goldmann perimeter has become the accepted standard against which new perimeters are measured.

[Polyglactin 910 implants in muscle revision surgery for the reconstruction of physiologic limits in Tenon's capsule].

Iatrogenic damage to the orbital fascial system during strabismus surgery may lead to adherences with resulting problems of motility. To prevent new adherences in revisional surgery, several materials were tried, with varying degrees of success. The authors tested Polyglactin 910, popular as a suture material in strabismus surgery, in the form of a net. The material is hydrolytically soluble. Since the tissue response is finished before dissolution of the implant, it seemed that Polyglactin would be a suitable barrier to the formation of adhesions in Tenon's capsule. The implant was applied in 11 patients, some of whom had already undergone several strabismus operations and had adhesions at the surgical site. In one case the implant was used in a primary procedure. In one patient revisional surgery was needed four weeks after surgery because of overeffect, and this provided an opportunity to investigate the implanted area histologically.

[Effective dose--personnel occupationally exposed to radiation--medical supervision (the new x-ray ordinance)].

The Federal German X-Ray Regulations have been adapted to the latest state of the art in respect of dose definitions, physical radiation protection control, examination by an authorized physician and have been brought in line with existing regulations and guidelines. This has resulted in making some things easier to some extent, at least in a few areas. This applies in particular to monitoring the dose in respect of individuals and to the requisite examination of an individual by an authorized physician. The definition of an "effective dose" will hardly exercise any impact on medical practice, since it is required to be calculated in very rare cases only.
