[Diagnostic colposcopy of adenocarcinoma of the cervix uteri (author's transl)].

Although frequency rate of adenocarcinoma of the cervix is about 5% or over in cervical carcinoma, colposcopical studies of this lesion have never been reported systematically. We observed the colposcopic findings of 52 cervical adenocarcinoma cases. Resemblances in the findings between colposcopy of the lesion and hysteroscopy of corpus carcinoma were examined in order to confirm diagnosis. And the points differentiating the lesion from other lesion with similar findings were noted. In early cases, papillary findings (Cad), transformation-like findings (Tad), mixed findings, granulation-like findings (Gr), columnar epithelium (C) and atypical vessels (aV) were observed. The lesion tended to bleed and secrete mucus. Glomerulus and tendrilous vessels were seen in the papillaries, and roo-like, wastethread-like, tendrilous and corkscrew-like vessels outside the papillaries. In advanced cases, the lesions tended to necrotic mass and the surface collapsed. White epithelium, mosaic and punctation were not observed in the pure adenocarcinoma cases but were observed in some adeno-squamous carcinoma cases. These surface and capillary characteristics resembled the hysteroscopic findings of corpus carcinoma. The papillary findings resembled some squamous carcinoma findings, papilloma and columnar epithelium. We differentiated the lesion by color, luster, degree of alteration after application of acetic acid, shape of papillaries, nature of bleedings, secretion of mucus, formation of necrotic mass, surface degeneration and vessel types.

The mechanism of barium-induced automaticity in ventricular muscle fibers.

When 2 mM BaCl2 was applied to dog ventricular muscle fibers that never showed a pacemaker activity under physiological conditions, muscle fibers depolarized to -46 mV and developed spontaneous activity. This spontaneous activity exhibited slow upstroke velocity and prolonged plateau of action potentials. The frequency of the Ba2+-induced automaticity was dependent on external Ca2+ concentrations and increased with a higher external Ca2+ up to 7.2 mM. The automaticity was abolished in Na+-free solution, high K+ (21.6 mM) solution, and the presence of verapamil. Membrane currents after Ba2+ application were shown to decrease in the steady state current and to increase in the slow inward current. The analysis of changes in the steady state current current revealed a decrease in the background K+ current, but no changes or later increase in the time-dependent K+ current after prolonged exposure to Ba2+. From these results, it is concluded that the Ba2+-induced automaticity is brought about by the decrease in the background K+ current, the increase in the slow inward current, and the activation of the time-dependent K+ current.

Intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma induced in the stomach of rats by N-propyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine.

PNNG, the propyl derivative of MNNG, was administered to Wistar rats by a concentration of 59.5 micrograms/ml in the drinking water for 4, 8, and 12 months and the rats were killed in the 15th month. Intestinal metaplasia was induced in the glandular stomachs of 25%, 75%, and 83% of the rats treated with PNNG for 4, 8, and 12 months, respectively. Metaplastic glands were found in the pyloric region, especially near the pyloric ring. These glands contained goblet cells and columnar cells with striated borders. No tumors were found in the stomach of rats after 4-months treatment, but adenomas were found after 8-months treatment, and both adenomas and adenocarcinomas after 12-months treatment.

Promoting action of croton oil on gastrocarcinogenesis by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine in rats.

The promoting effect of croton oil on gastrocarcinogenesis by MNNG was examined in male Wistar rats. Gastric carcinomas were found in five of 10 rats given 83 micrograms/ml MNNG for three months and then 0.02% croton oil with 0.5% Tween 60 as solvent for nine months. No gastric carcinomas were found in rats given MNNG for three months and then Tween 60 only for nine months. The incidence of gastric carcinomas in these two groups was significantly different (p less than 0.05). No tumors were found in rats given only croton oil with Tween 60.

Levamisole in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus complicated with lupus nephritis were treated with levamisole, an immunomodulator. Clinical features, including urinary protein excretion and creatine clearance, were restored in one patient, also immunoparameters such as ANA, Ig-bearing cell number and PHA-skin test. The other patient did not respond to levamisole but did respond to cyclophosphamide.
