Radioimmunoassay of bovine parathyroid hormone.

A radioimmunoassay of bovine parathyroid hormone (PTH) was developed, using guinea pig antiserum against bovine PTH and highly purified 125I-labeled bovine PTH. The 125I-labeled PTH which had been purified by antiserum against PTH had higher sensitivity than that purified by the adsorption method with microfine precipitated silica Quso G 32. An equilibrium and an unequilibrium incubation methods were used comparatively. 125I-labeled PTH was incubated at the same time, with antiserum against PTH, and a sample in the former and added after preincubation in the latter, which gave better results than the former. By the unequilibrium incubation method, the plasma PTH level was measured in nonpregnant cows infused experimentally with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and untreated pregnant cows 2 to 30 days before parturition. As a result, plasma PTH levels were raised after EDTA infusion. The plasma PTH levels in cows of the late stage of pregnancy were 1.16 +/- 0.93 ng/ml. A reciprocal relationship was observed between plasma PTH and calcium levels. It was statistically significant with an inverse correlation coefficient of -0.661 (P less than 0.001).

Clinical utility and validation of the Japanese version of Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale in a psychogeriatric inpatient setting.

Delirium is a common mental disorder in the elderly. The Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale (MDAS) was developed in 1997 to assess delirium severity over time. The purpose of the current prospective study is to assess the clinical utility, diagnostic potential, reliability and validity of the Japanese version of MDAS in a psychogeriatric unit setting. Reliability was examined by testing 37 elderly patients; validity was examined concurrently by 16 patients with delirium. Two psychiatrists evaluated each patient simultaneously. Mean MDAS ratings differed among groups of patients with delirium, dementia, or no cognitive impairment. High levels of consistency within raters (Cronbach's alpha=0.92) and reliability between raters (0.98) were indicated. The correlation between MDAS scores and rating on the Delirium Rating Scale (r=.74, P=.0011), the Clinician's Global Rating of delirium severity (r=.67, P=.0047), and the Mini Mental State Examination (r=-.54, P=.029) was fair. The MDAS seems to be a reliable measuring instrument for assessing delirium in elderly patients.

[Santa Tereza Windows: a study of the psycho-social rehabilitation process at the Psychiatric Hospital in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo].

This is a case study of a psycho-social rehabilitation process taking place at Santa Tereza, a psychiatric hospital in Ribeirão Preto, whose objective is to understand possibilities and limitations implied in the rehabilitation process within Pensões Protegidas (Protected Homes) project. The basic strategies for the present study involved participative observation and interviews with individuals living in such homes as well as with the multi-professional staff working in the process. The results reveal a kind of orientation quite distant from the hospital-centered trend, since they reveal remarkable tendency towards deinstitutionalization. Finally, the author emphasizes the contribution of Pensões Protegidas Project at Santa Tereza for the better understanding of the so-called mentally ill.

[The scientific production of nurses in São Paulo State in the triennium of 1985-1988].

An exploratory study of the research carried out by nurses belonging to the Brazilian Nursing Association from 1985 to 1988 was conducted with following objectives: to analyze the characteristics of the scientific production of nurses; to identify the forms of dissemination of these studies, and to determine the expectations of nurses with respect to the Center of Nursing Studies and Research "Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas em Enfermagem" (CEPEn). Scientific papers, reports of experience, theses and monographs predominated in the production identified. The forms of dissemination most frequently mentioned were scientific events and publication in Brazilian journals. The suggestions presented to CEPEn point at the need of promoting events, courses, research meetings, research dissemination and consulting on projects.
