Evaluation of tests for predicting the viability of axial pattern skin flaps in the pig.

The viability of axial pattern skin flaps in pigs was assessed by the use of intravenous fluorescein, intradermal injection of 133Xe in saline, intravenous 51Cr tagged red cells, and angiography. The results were correlated with flap survival at 4 days postoperatively. Intravenous fluorescein provided the most accurate method for prediction of viable tissue at the time of operation. There was no evidence of vascular perfusion in the distal portions of these flaps. These axial pattern flaps differed in their viability from similar flaps in humans, and anastomoses between discrete vascular territories were infrequent in pigskin.

Increased longevity of Drosophila melanogaster with diiodomethane.

Diiodomethane at a concentration of 10 microgram/ml increased the median life span of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, by 29.3%. Decreased flight activity was associated with increased longevity when the flies were reared and maintained on diiodomethane. Rearing only on diiodomethane increased life span by 13.6% and eliminated the decreased-flight-activity phenomenon. The effects of iodine, iodoform and hydriodic acid on longevity were also examined.

Be, Li, and Na redistribution near a porcelain/Ni alloy interface shown by ion microprobe mass analysis.

During porcelainization the non-preoxidized alloy develops a Be-rich reaction zone in the interface which separates a Be-depleted alloy from a Li and (to a lesser extent Na) depleted region of the ceramic. Thus, Be diffuses to the interface through the alloy Be degrees leads to Be++ + 2 e- occurs at the interface; some of the electrons are electronically conducted to the porcelain-air interface where they are consumed as 2 e- + 1/2 O degrees 2 leads to O=, and the resulting negatively charged porcelain surface attracts Li+ (and Na+).

Dental porcelain/Ni alloy interface reactions and their effective prevention.

In a Be-bearing Ni alloy porcelainized without preoxidation, Be diffuses to the interface, oxidizes, and oxygen is supplied by the atmosphere at the porcelain surface and by reduction of SiO2 at the porcelain-alloy interface. On the alloy side of the interface, pits develop locally and near them Ni and Cr oxidize. In the oxide, Ni and Si are reduced to form nickel silicides. Preoxidation of the alloy prevents Be oxidation and Si reduction for several hours of porcelainization.

Carcinoma in situ of the ectopic testis.

A young man with a palpable ectopic testis underwent right testis biopsy and orchiopexy. Since histological findings of the biopsy specimen revealed an unsuspected intratubular carcinoma in situ and evidence of diminished spermatogenic potential, an inguinal orchiectomy was done. This appears to be the first reported case of a tumor of this type developing in an undescended testis.

Driving records before and during methadone maintenance.

We compared the motor vehicle driving records of 104 former heroin users during 1 year of heroin use before admission to methadone maintenance with their records during 1 year after admission while they were maintained on methadone. We found a statistically significant increase in convictions for speeding from the year on heroin to the year on methadone, but no significant change in convictions for negligent collision, other moving violations, driving without a license, and in accidents. The results suggest that heroin users have slightly better driving records on heroin than they do on methadone, possibly because on heroin they drive with special care to avoid arrest. The frequency with which our subjects were involved in accidents did not differ significantly from that of all Texas licensed drivers. On the basis of this study we recommend no restriction of the driving privilege of persons maintained on methadone.

Lack of increase in DNA crosslinking in Drosophila melanogaster with age.

Adult Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies ranging in age from 2 to 7.5 weeks with a median colony survival time of 6.4 weeks at 25 degrees C showed no increase in DNA crosslinking with age. The purified denatured DNA used for crosslink determinations varied in molecular weight from 2.02 to 3.84 times 10(5) daltons and was crosslinked to the extent of 6.2-8.8% with no age-related trend.
