[Status of cerebral ventricles and meninges in subarachnoid hemorrhage (clinico-pathomorphological studies)].

Long-term investigation of 64 patients with subarachnoidal hemorrhages (SH), 24 of which had subsequently died, and 2 series of experiments of animals with a single or repeated intracysternal infusion of various doses of autologous blood, yielded the description of the response of the meninges and ventricles at different terms after SH. The brain ventricles were measured by axial computer tomography and echoencephalography. A index of CSF resorption resistance and CSF pressure were determined. The cerebral meninges from experimental animals and autopsied human ones underwent the histological examination. The authors discuss the mechanisms of development of liquor dynamic disorders at different terms after SH.

[In vivo and in vitro cytospectrophotometric studies of DNA in the cells of human neuroectrodermal brain tumors].

A rather distinct correlation in the content and distribution of DNA with the grade of malignancy was estabilished for the following series: normal astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes, typical astrocyfomas and oligodendrogliomas atypical astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas. For glioblastomas this correlation is impaired, because the polymorphic variant of glioblastoma is characterized by particularly great disturbances in the content and distribution of DNA in the form of polyploidy and aneuploidy which, in this case, reflects not only the grade of malignancy, but also a pronounced polymorphism of tumour cells. The content of DNA in rapidly growing malignant tumours is not only an expressions of real deviation to the side of polyploidy and the mitotic cycle. In neuroectodermal tumours growing in the condition of cell culture, the similar regularity was observed, although the phenomena of aneuploidy were more distinctly expressed in the majority of tumours.

[Histochemical study of the enzymatic activity of cultivated human macroglial brain tumors].

A histichemical study is presented of the activity of some redox enzymes (succinate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, NAD-diaphorase and lactate dehydrogenase) in 37 cultured human glial brain tumours. The stages of cell activity at different periods of tumour cultivation and the level of their differentiation in the initial tissue were taken into consideration. The examined tumour cultures showed enzymatic cell polymorphizm. During of period of adaptation of explants, the activity of the Krebs cycle enzymes was low to increase during differentiation and proliferation of cultures. The activity of lactate dehydrogenase elevated in tumour cells from cultures of dedifferentiated astrocytomas and glioblastomas mith marked anaplasia. The activity of this enzyme increased also in the course of advanced necrobiotic changes in the tumour cells.

[Clinico-morphologic characteristics of brain contusion in patients of various age groups].

Brain contusion in children becomes fatal only when the cerebrocranial trauma is very serious and coarse diffuse lesions occur in the whole brain. Foci of intracerebral hemorrhages are relatively rare in such cases. A special form of affection--diffuse involvement of the brain is often encountered in children and young persons. In patients of the older age groups a fatal outcome may occur not only in a severe but also in a relatively mild trauma; it is due to the trauma itself and also to secondary pathological reactions on the part of the cardiovascular and other systems of the organism. The contusion foci in elderly and old-aged individuals are characterized as a rule by extensive hemorrhages. The younger the patient, the more is the tendency towards manifestation of the regularities characteristic of the child organism, and, in contrast, the older the patient and the more pronounced the signs of premature advanced age, the higher is the frequency of complications and fatal outcomes in relatively mild cerebrocranial trauma.

[Toxicity of anti-tumor preparations after intracranial, subarachnoid and suboccipital administration (experimental study)].

Experiments were conducted on animals to study intrathecal injection of agents differing in the mechanism of action: variamycin, mitramycin, reumycin, proxyphein, and prospidin. Their acute toxicity in a single intracerebral injection and chronic toxicity in repeated suboccipital injection were studied. The brains of animals who died or were killed were studied pathomorphologically in different periods. Intracerebrally and suboccipitally injected variamycin and mitramycin induced marked toxic reactions, even the death of animals, and cannot be recommended for the neurooncological clinic. The antineoplastic reumycin, proxyphein, and prospidin cause no toxic reactions of the brain and meninges on injection by the above mentioned methods; they are recommended for approbation in the neurooncological clinic for the treatment of patients with malignant tumors of the brain by injection into the system of the cerebrospinal fluid.

[Multiple primary brain tumors].

This is a write-up of 32 studies of patients suffering from multiple primary brain tumours. Such tumours are encountered quite rarely. Meningiomas, as well as their combination with tumours of another histological structure (neurinomas, gliomas) were most often studied among multiple primary brain tumours. Multiple gliomas occur even more rarely; they may be of a varying degree of malignancy and different in histological structure. Questions of histological structure, the peculiar features of the clinical picture, diagnosis and surgical treatment of patients with this pathology are discussed. A very rare case of multiple primary sarcomas of the brain is described.

[Ultrastructural organization of methylnitrosourea-induced brain tumors in the rat. Serial transplantation].

The specific ultrastructural features of two transplantable rat gliomas (221 and 223) are described. The tumors contained poorly differentiated anaplastic cells and differentiated cells with a great amount of gliofibrils. The resemblance of experimental gliomas to human gliomas is discussed. The capillary ultrastructure in the transplantable gliomas is described.

[Brain tumors in the rat induced by methylnitrosourea (induction, transplantation, monolayer cultivation)].

Tumors induced in rats by chronic methylnitrosourea administration are described. Two strains of transplantable brain gliomas obtained by serial intracerebral transplantation of primary neoplasms and their monolayer cultures are characterized. These tumors were similar to human malignant gliomas in morphological and biological properties. They possesses high oncogenicity and are easily cultured in a monolayer, which allows their application in oncological and biochemical studies.
