[Assessment of pathological changes in fish muscle tissue, forming as a result of exposure to toxic factors in the environment].

Our investigation of muscle tissue of fishes, inhabiting the regions with unfavorable ecological conditions (the river Volga), permitted to select four types of degenerative changes in muscle tissue. These alterations are associated with both the phylogenetic status of fish species and ecological dispositions of species. Using different methods of investigation several types of muscle destruction were shown. I. Destruction of myofibrillar apparatus (lysis of protofibrils), with sarcolemma remaining intact. II. Destruction of the myofibrillar apparatus, with sarcolemma, T-system, and sarcoplasmic reticulum being disrupted. III. Invasion of muscle fibers by lymphoid cells and macrophages; with sarcolemma being intact. IV. Lysis of sarcolemma by proteolytic enzymes of lymphoid elements; with muscle fibers being disintegrated. The objects of this study were muscle tissues of 8 fish species (Acipenser gueldenstadti, A. stellatus, A. ruthenus, Lucioprerca lucioperca, Esox lucius, Perca fluviatilis, Tinca tinca, Caprinus carpio). The white muscle degeneration followed the patterns of types I and II, while that of red muscles corresponded to types III and IV. White and red muscles of the Chondrostei fishes (sturgeon, stellate, sterlet) undergo destruction more frequently, than muscles of the Holostei fishes (pike, perch, zander, sazan, tench). Degenerative processes of white and red muscles of fish-eating fishes were more obvious than those of herbivorous fishes.

Cultivation of the notochord of a Balanoglossus species in diffusion chambers.

Minute fragments of the notochord of Balanoglossus sp. were cultivated in diffusion chambers implanted into the arm cavities of starfish, Asterias rubens. The surface properties of the cells migrating from these fragments and the intercellular contacts between them were examined in a scanning electron microscope type "Stereoscan." The two types of cell constituting the initial notochordal transplantate migrated already on the 2nd day of cultivation; these were rather large (10-12 mu) round cells with characteristic outgrowths, which grouped into colonies already on the 3rd-5th day of growth in culture, and small cells (5-7 mu) of elongated shape that at early cultivation stages were found scattered in a disorderly manner over the filter. At later cultivation stages (days 10-12), the small cells migrated toward the colonies of round notochordal cells and penetrated inside them. As a result, large colonies (counting 100 or more cells) developed in the cultures, their arrangement resembling that of the donor animal's notochord.

[Use of scanning electron microscopy for studying the intersection of lymphocytes with tumor cells].

With the aid of steroscan microscopy it was found that the state of surface membranes of the cells under study showed a significant change during the interaction of lymphocytes of BALB/C mice--bearers of methylcholantrene-induced sarcoma--with autologous tumour cells. Lymphocytes separated from the autologous tumour cells by a millipore filter formed long cytoplasmic processes which passed through the filter pores and came into close contact with tumour cells. Tumour cells acquired a spherical shape, and became swollen; "openings" appeared in the surface membrane, and this led to cell lysis.

[Regulation of histogenesis in the axial organ of echinoderms (Echinodermata) according to findings from diffusion chamber cultivation].

Fragments of axial organs of different echinoderms were cultivated together with the gonad epithelium in the diffusion chambers made of millipore filters impermeable for cells (VUFS). Under these conditions, the histogenesis of amoebocytes suffered definite changes: the number of middle amoebocytes increased 2-3 times and that of large amoebocytes decreased correspondingly. Similar results were obtained not only under the direct contact of two tissues, but also under the contact realized through the millipore filter impermeable for cells. Corticosteroid agents of vertebrates did not influence the histogenesis of amoebocytes in Echinodermata.
