In the cross-circulated canine heart-lung preparation, the stroke volume (SV) or the end-systolic volume increased linearly with increasing end-diastolic volume (EDV) when the afterloading impedance was fixed. Exactly the same result was obtained in the relation between the initial length (I) and the amount of shortening (S) for the tetanic contraction of isolated frog ventricular muscle. The slope of the EDV-SV or I-S relation was less than 1.0, suggesting that a kind of depressive effect or a deactivation of contraction was working during the active shortening of cardiac muscle. The slope, which inversely reflects the degree of deactivation, slightly tended to 1.0 with decreasing load and markedly by inotropic intervention, but it was not changed by partial ischemia. The horizontal axis intercept of the EDV-SV or I-S relation, which reflects the ability of the cardiac muscle to shorten under a specified afterloaded condition, shifted to the right (the ability decreased) at a larger load or under partial ischemia but shifted to the left with inotropic intervention. The deactivation increased linearly with the amount of active shortening but no deactivation was observed when there was no active shortening or no load. The mechanism of the deactivation is not due to a shortage of active-state duration but probably due to a depressive effect on Ca2+ utilization of the contractile system during the sliding phase of myofilaments.

In an effort to improve the antibacterial activity of 7 beta-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)acetamido]-cephalosporins by introducing a methoxyimino group into the 7-acyl side chain, geometrically isomeric 2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetic acids and their derivatives were selectively synthesized. Structurally related acid derivatives were also synthesized. A facile and practical synthesis of an important starting material, 2-(2-chloroacetamidothiazol-4-yl)-(Z)-2-methoxyiminoacetic acid, for the preparation of SCE-1365 which is now under extensive clinical trial was achieved.
In order to improve the antibacterial activity of 7 beta-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)acetamido]-cephalosporins new derivatives having a methoxyimino moiety in the 7-acyl side chain and related compounds were synthesized. Of these, 7 beta-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-(Z)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-cephalosporins were found to possess excellent activity against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including beta-lactamase-producing strains. An extensive study of structure-activity relationships led to the selection of 7 beta-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-(Z)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-3-[(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl) thiomethyl]-ceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid, SCE-1365, for further biological and clinical evaluation.

A total of 19 pediatric patients received cefoxitin for the treatment of various infections by intravenous injections of a daily dose ranging from 68 to 125 mg/kg body weight dividing the dose into 3 to 4 times per day. The therapeutic efficacy was excellent in 14 cases, good in 4 and fair in 1, the efficacy rate being 95%. As for side effects, 1 case each of rash, diarrhea and eosinophilia were observed, but none of them were serious.
Cefroxadine dry syrup was studied clinically and the following results were obtained. The drug was administered to 19 cases of bacterial infections: acute tonsillitis (6), acute bronchitis (6), scarlet fever (2), acute pyelonephritis (4) and acute cystitis (1). The daily dose was about 30 approximately 50 mg/kg except for 1 patient. The drug was given orally, 3 times a day and the duration of administration was from 4 to 11 days. The overall efficacy rate was 100%, i.e., excellent in 17 cases, good in 2 cases. One patient experienced a mild S-GOT elevation and another patient in mild vomiting. From the results obtained in this study, cefroxadine dry syrup seems to be useful in the treatment of infectious diseases of children.

A case of neurofibroma of small intestine presented with massive intra-abdominal bleeding was reported. There was a total of 51 cases of neurogenic tumor of small intestine including the present case to be collected from Japanese literature. 33 cases were not associated with Von Recklinghausen's disease. Discussion was given according to their sex and age distribution, symptom and sign, type of development, tendency of malignant degeneration, and treatment.
