Study of prostaglandins and intraocular pressure in rabbits after Nd:YAG laser anterior segment procedures.

Radioimmunoassay of rabbit aqueous humor one hour after Nd:YAG laser anterior capsulotomies revealed increased concentrations of 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha (PGF1 alpha), and thromboxane B2 (TBB2). Coincidental rises in intraocular pressure (IOP) and aqueous humor protein were observed. These changes correlated with the laser power used. Pretreatment with topical 1% prednisolone acetate or 1% indomethacin prior to anterior capsulotomies inhibited the post laser rise in PGF1 alpha and TBB2, but did not eliminate the post laser rise in IOP. Small rises in IOP and the concentrations of aqueous PGF1 alpha, TBB2, and protein were observed after Nd:YAG laser iridectomies. These changes were not affected by prior treatment with 1% topical prednisolone acetate. Although PGF1 alpha and TBB2 are elevated after Nd:YAG laser anterior segment procedures, a causal relationship between post treatment IOP rise and PGF1 alpha or TBB2 release could not be determined.

Effect of Yag-laser anterior capsulotomy on the biochemical content of aqueous humor.

Elevation of prostaglandins and protein in the aqueous humor is an immediate response to Yag-laser anterior capsulotomy. There was a significant correlation between prostaglandins and thromboxane to the elevation of intraocular pressure. The elevation of protein concentration was proportional to the elevation of prostaglandin F1, but not to thromboxane. The biochemical changes in the aqueous humor were more severe as laser power was increased above 3 mj. While the role of prostaglandins in the elevation of intraocular pressure is uncertain, the present data recommend the selection of laser power below 3 mj to avoid pressure rise instead of inhibition of all prostaglandin synthesis by medication.

Myoadenylate deaminase deficiency: an enzyme defect in search of a disease.

The frequency of MAD deficiency in cases with exercise intolerance compared with the frequency in series of consecutive muscle biopsies suggests a relation between the deficiency and exercise intolerance. Deficiency cases can be presumed by an impaired NH3 production during ischaemic exercise. The ischaemic exercise test also gives information concerning the familial character of the deficiency.

Reactions to ischemic pain: interactions between individual, situational and naloxone effects.

Fifty-two paid volunteers participated in two separate factorial investigations of the effects of naloxone on time tolerance of and affective reactions to ischemia, as a function of the interaction between expectations of involvement in the experimental situation and experimental variables involving stress or suggestions of analgesia. Naloxone-induced reduction in tolerance to ischemia interacted significantly with the level of involvement expectancies. The suggestion of analgesia provided no significant naloxone-saline discrimination, but there was a significant interaction between variable memory task conditions and drug effects on the time ischemia was tolerated. These findings suggest that naloxone-opiate receptor interactions may depend on individual differences in attitudes to the situation, but may be potentiated by select environmental stimuli. Analyses of the effects of treatment on affective reactions to ischemia failed to show consistent results.
