Cholesteatomas of the temporal bone. Preoperative C-T versus peroperative findings.

In a series of 25 ears with chronic otitis media the correlation between findings obtained by preoperative C-T of the temporal bone and observations made at surgery was evaluated. The study was performed "blindly", i.e., neither the radiologist nor the surgeon had any knowledge of the other's findings. Cholesteatoma prediction varied with location. Similar observations were made in respect to granulation tissue and erosions. A relatively high percentage of false positives and false negatives was found even in this rather small sample. To obtain better results by C-T, close co-operation and exchange of information between clinician and radiologist appears necessary, along with an explorative attico-antrotomy as a regular part of the operation.

Experiences with iohexol (Omnipaque) at urography.

In a prospective study of 547 pediatric intravenous pyelographies with a new non-ionic contrast medium (iohexol), only 5 (0.9%) minor reactions were observed. The higher price seems justified, and iohexol is strongly recommended in neonates as well as older children.

Radiological findings in children with respiratory syncytial virus infection: relationship to clinical and bacteriological findings.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a frequent cause of bronchiolitis leading to acute admission to hospital in the winter months. A wide range of findings accompanies this disease and the appearances are seldom completely diagnostic. Associated bacterial co-infections are common and we have shown an association with atelectasis among patients with pathogenic bacteria in the nasopharynx.

Hereditary renal adysplasia.

A family with unilateral renal "agenesis" through 3 generations is presented. In two of the members, a small tissue bud with a ureteric remnant was observed, compatible with the syndrome of hereditary renal adysplasia. Small kidneys and small compensatory renal hypertrophy appear to be characteristic in this family.

Sialography and CT-sialography in the diagnosis of parotid masses.

Parotid masses were evaluated by sialography and CT-sialography in 22 patients. Nineteen were benign tumors and one a metastasis. All were identified by CT. Two patients with sialoadenitis were misinterpreted at CT. All benign tumors appeared as lobulated, sharply marginated masses, embedded in displaced glandular parenchyma. The metastasis was lobulated, irregular and located within the gland. With sialography, 17 tumors were identified and 3 small superficial tumors overlooked. Both patients with sialoadenitis were diagnosed by sialography. CT-sialography is recommended in patients with suggested parotid masses, and sialography in suggested inflammatory disease.

Late presentation of left-sided congenital diaphragmatic (Bochdalek) hernia.

Two patient with late presentation of Bochdalek hernia are reported. The intraoperative findings strongly suggested a "plugging effect" of the spleen in the diaphragmatic defect, thus protecting for some time against herniation. The initial absence of respiratory symptoms indicates a normal development of the lungs in these cases of late herniation.

Metrizamide and metrizoate for cardioangiography in infants and children.

Metrizamide was compared with metrizoate in a double blind investigation. Cardioangiography was performed in 30 infants and children below 2 years of age with congenital heart disease. Adverse reactions were few and unimportant. Changes in ECG, ventricular pressure and heart rate during and after the contrast injections were recorded. The side effects were slight in both groups. Metrizamide caused less changes than metrizoate at a statistically significant level.

Ultrasonography in the diagnosis of neonatal adrenal haemorrhage.

Two cases of neonates with adrenal haemorrhage are presented. The clinical, radiological and ultrasonographical signs are described. The future role of echography as compared to other radiological procedures, including computerized tomography, is discussed. Ultrasonography is recommended as a screening method, and is well suited for assessing the size and internal structure of pathological processes.
