Oligomycin antibiotics, 44-homooligomycin A (NK86-0279 II) and B (NK86-0279 I) are newly discovered antitumor antibiotics with the substitution of ethyl for methyl at carbon 26. They were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces bottropensis NK86-0279. The structure of these two compounds was deduced by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses. These antibiotics showed potent antitumor activities against various tumor cells in vitro, and were active against Colon 26 carcinoma in vivo. Although they showed no activity at 1,000 micrograms/ml against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeast, they have antifungal activity.

Statistical data are summarized regarding surgery for senile cataracts on patients older than 45 years of age in Okayama Prefecture. In patients older than 65 years operated on for senile cataracts, the male-to-female ratio was 1.8 with a female predominance. An age-related cataract surgery index is demonstrated which suggests that the lower limit for the diagnosis of senile cataracts should be placed at 65 years.

Plipastatins have been isolated as part of a program designed to find inhibitors of porcine pancreatic phospholipase A2. They were purified from fermentation broth of Bacillus cereus BMG302-fF67 and finally separated into four fractions by reverse phase HPLC. The respective fractions were designated as plipastatins A1, A2, B1 and B2. Plipastatins also inhibited phospholipases C and D.
Plipastatins, new inhibitors of phospholipase A2, were produced by a strain classified as Bacillus cereus BMG302-fF67. The plipastatins are a family of acylated decapeptides which differ from each other by amino acid composition and the nature of the fatty acid side chain. The fatty acids have been shown to be 3(R)-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (n-C16h3) and 14(S)-methyl-3(R)-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (a-C16h3) by mass, NMR and optical rotation. Amino acid sequence analysis by secondary ion mass spectrometry and additional physico-chemical evidence indicate that the structures of plipastatinic acids, the lactone-opened peptides are as follows: beta-Hydroxy fatty acid----L-Glu----D-Orn----L-Tyr----D-allo-Thr----L-Glu----D-Ala(Val)---- L-Pro----L-Gln----D-Tyr----L-Ile X OH.
Plipastatins are new inhibitors of phospholipase A2 produced by Bacillus cereus BMG302-fF67. Structures of the plipastatins have been determined by UV, mass and NMR spectrometries and chemical degradation. The carboxyl group of the C-terminal L-isoleucine of plipastatinic acid has been shown to form a lactone linkage with the hydroxyl group of L-tyrosine. The total structure of plipastatins has thus been established.

Although our previous studies demonstrated marked changes in the activities of hydrolytic enzymes in guinea pigs afflicted with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), it is possible that at least some parts of them were due to the effects of Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) per se used for immunization. Thus we tried to find the property of the enzymatic changes in the tissues of limb muscle, heart muscle, spleen, liver, kidney, brain, spinal cord and serum induced by the administration of FCA alone to the guinea pigs. FCA caused rather intensive enzymatic changes in every organ tested. When the patterns of these enzymatic changes were compared with those of the animals afflicted with EAE, a significant correlation was seen only in forelimb muscle at 1 week after the injection of the agents, whereas at 2 weeks significant correlations were seen in heart and liver. Although these results indicate that in some organs there are some similarities between the two experimental conditions, the degree of determination for this phenomenon was not high, being 28% at the highest. This means that most of the enzymatic changes seen in the animals afflicted with EAE could not be explained by the effects of FCA. It was concluded that FCA causes unique and systemic enzymatic changes when administered to the animals.

A new antibiotic, setamycin, was extracted from the mycelia of a rare actinomycete strain KM-6054. The antibiotic, the molecular formula of which was found to be C42H61NO12 (tentative), is a yellow powder showing activity against some fungi, trichomonads and weakly against Gram-positive bacteria.
