Three cases of ruptured arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in childhood associated with trivial head trauma are reported. These patients represented 12.5% of 25 consecutive patients with cerebral AVMs. The patients' ages ranged from 5 to 9 years; the patients were younger than their nontraumatic counterparts. The force of the trauma was presumably received in an anteroposterior or posteroanterior direction in all cases. Hematomas accompanying the AVMs were located in the subcortical area of the parietal or temporal lobe and angiographically their feeding arteries were all from the anterior cerebral artery or middle cerebral artery. The possible mechanisms for the rupture of AVMs after trivial head trauma are discussed.
A patient with a large acoustic neuroma had contralateral hemifacial spasm. On CT, the brainstem was markedly displaced and distorted by the tumor. After total removal of the tumor the hemifacial spasm was temporarily worse, but disappeared 14 days after the operation.

The effect of exogenous estrogen on gonadotropin secretion was studied in postmenopausal women. Twelve postmenopausal Japanese women were administered 40 micrograms/day of ethinyl estradiol (EE) orally throughout the study. The ages of the volunteers ranged between 51 and 86 years. In the fourth week of the study, a daily dose of 200 micrograms of EE was also given orally to each subject for 4 days. The original administration of 40 micrograms/day of EE resulted in a gradual decline in both FSH and LH during the treatment. The degree of change in percent in decrease of FSH release was greater than that of LH release. When EE 200 micrograms/day was also given for 4 consecutive days a positive feedback action in both the FSH and LH levels was evident. The duration to the peak of the positive feedback action in LH and FSH was 5.3 and 4.4 days, respectively. These results suggest that the negative and positive feedback actions of estrogen on FSH and LH release are preserved in postmenopausal women.
Human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (hG-CSF) cDNA was cloned, by using a synthetic oligonucleotide probe, from an Okayama-Berg cDNA library of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated human peripheral blood macrophages. The cDNA encodes a polypeptide with an amino acid sequence which completely matches that of the known polypeptide with hG-CSF activity derived from human tumor cell lines. Expression in E. coli of high levels of the protein (about 10% of total cellular proteins) was accomplished under control of the trp promoter, and the purified protein was proved to have hG-CSF activity. Our data provide evidence that human peripheral blood macrophages do produce hG-CSF mRNA when stimulated exogenously, suggesting they are the producer of naturally occurring hG-CSF.

The effects of the autonomic nervous system on muscle blood flow during and after contraction were studied. Autonomic blocking agent or stimulant was infused into the ear vein of rabbits. Muscle blood flow was measured by heated thermocouple technique on the quadriceps femoris stimulated by current of 5Hz, 6V and 0,1 msec duration. There was a statistically significant reduction of the postcontraction hyperemia after infusion of phentolamine methylate. Isoproterenol also caused significant reduction in post-contraction hyperemia. On the other hand, epinephrine, norepinephrine and propranolol had no effect on the muscle blood flow. These results suggest that most of the changes in muscle blood flow are not affected by the autonomic nervous system but that, the system may play in the hyperemic reaction of the skeletal muscle.

The Escherichia coli trp promoter has two A + T-rich blocks in the upstream region. The deletion of the segments containing these blocks resulted in a decrease in promoter strength. By replacing the upstream region of trp promoter with one or two large A + T-rich blocks of the major leftward lambda promoter (pL), modified trp promoters (designated let) were constructed, and the transcriptional activities of these promoters towards the expression of the human interferon-gamma gene were measured. The let promoters which contain one (designated letI) or two (designated letII) A + T-rich blocks were about 6 times (at the levels of interferon activity produced) or about 3 times (at the levels of mRNA synthesized de novo) stronger than the wild-type trp promoter. The transcription from the letI promoter was controlled both by the trpR-coded repressor and the cI-coded repressor of phage lambda.
This paper reports an autopsy case of a 5-year and 11-month-old girl with generalized subcutaneous lipomatosis, megalencephaly, and macrodactyly. Marked emaciation and poor prognosis were the characteristic findings of this case. We thought that this case was identical with a rare syndrome which was initially reported by BANNAYAN in 1971. Autopsy disclosed diffuse lipomatosis in the thoracic and abdominal cavity, and infiltration of fat tissue to the pancreas. Hyperplasia of the small intestinal mucosa and Peyer's patch, and a pedunculated polyp of the sigmoid colon were the unique findings which could not be seen in the previously reported cases.

Using monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry percentages and absolute number of lymphocyte populations and T cell subsets were enumerated in peripheral blood collected between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. from 210 healthy adults. Although absolute numbers of total lymphocytes did not differ depending on age and sex, the numbers of T (Leu-4+) and natural killer (Leu-7+) cells as well as their percentages showed negative and positive correlations, respectively, with age. In Leu-7+ cells, the percentage was male-dominant irrespective of age, and the absolute number was male-dominant only in older subjects. Absolute numbers of suppressor/cytotoxic T (Leu-2a+) and helper/inducer T (Leu-3a+) cells and percentages of Leu-2a+ cells were negatively correlated with age in females. In males, only the percentage of Leu-2a+ cells was age-dependent. Leu-3a/Leu-2a was positively correlated with age in females, and was female-dominant depending on age. These results indicate that peripheral lymphocyte populations and T cell subsets vary remarkably in healthy adults even at a fixed time of day.
