Granulomatous dermatitis with eosinophilia (Well's syndrome) occurred in an 11-year-old boy. To our knowledge, eosinophilic cellulitis in a child in whom atrophic alopecia of the affect scalp later develops during the regression phase has not previously been reported. No notable effect of steroid therapy was observed. The cause of eosinophilic cellulitis is still unknown, but the presence of disseminated fibrinoid necrosis, vasculitis, eosinophilia, and a positive antinuclear factor test result might indicate an autoimmune or allergic disease.

A system has been developed for the prolonged administration of intravenous feeding in general wards. The service is coordinated by a clinician, specialist nurse, and pharmacist. Under local anaesthesia a silicone-rubber catheter is introduced through an infraclavicular incision to create a skin tunnel. By this technique 22 of 27 treatment periods (mean duration 42 days) required the use of only one catheter each. Ward care is simplified by the use of 3 litre bags containing aminoacids, glucose, electrolytes, and trace elements. The bags are prepared under laminar-flow conditions by a pharmacist in a specially designed room. Vitamins are added to the mixture and 'Intralipid" is infused separately as needed. In 38 treatment periods over a total of 1551 days weight-gain and gain in fat-free mass when required were satisfactory; the weight-gain correlated with increase in arm-muscle cross-sectional area (r = 0.72). Patients who have learnt to use the catheter have left the hospital for periods of up to 3 days, and 2 patients have given themselves intravenous supplements regularly at night in their homes.

Six cases of elastofibroma located in the subscapular region are reported. The age of the patients ranged from 45 to 71 years (mean 59.5 years). In three cases the symptoms were posterior shoulder pain with arm motion, and one of these also had a snapping scapula. Two cases had tumor prominence as the only symptom, and in one case the tumor was found accidentally while thoracotomy was being performed. On magnetic resonance imaging a nonencapsulated soft-tissue mass closely related to the thoracic wall and elevating the scapula was identified. At surgery the tumor was densely adherent to the periosteum of the ribs and the external fascia of the rib cage, and peripherally it proceeded into the loose connective tissue of the subscapular space. Local excision was performed. At follow-up 1 to 8 years after surgery no recurrence was observed, and all patients with painful lesions had complete relief of pain.
Quick tests are proposed in the literature as alternatives to the large scale contamination and washing studies performed to date to assess the acceptability of plastic beverage bottles for refilling. These tests use small plastic specimens ('strips') in place of bottles and use mixtures of surrogate contaminants to model the myriad of chemicals that could in principle contaminate returned bottles because of consumer mis-use. The work reported here has measured the sorption and wash performance using the quick test protocol with PET (polyethyleneterephthalate) strips and laboratory washing and compared the results with tests using actual bottles and a commercial washing process. The comparison indicates that the quick test satisfactorily simulated contamination and commercial washing of intact bottles. The results also show that repeated washing of PET bottles does not cause higher sorption of contaminants.
The migration/sorption behaviour of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and alpha-tocopherol was studied in packaging material in contact with fatty food simulants. Two low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films, containing either BHT or alpha-tocopherol as antioxidants, were stored in contact with sunflower oil or 95% (v/v) ethanol. The antioxidant content was monitored in the films throughout a period of 7 weeks. The migration of alpha-tocopherol into the food simulants was slower than that of BHT. Since alpha-tocopherol was transferred from the film to the simulant to a lesser extent, it is considered to be a more stable antioxidant than BHT when used in an LDPE film in contact with 95% ethanol or sunflower oil.
Two different humic acids (HA) and a fulvic acid (FA) were chemically immobilized to a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) silica column material. The immobilization was performed by binding amino groups in HA/FA to the free aldehyde group in glutardialdehyde attached to the silica gel. The HPLC column materials were compared with a blank column material made by applying the same procedure but without immobilizing HA or FA. Also, a column was made by binding carbonyl groups in HA to amino groups attached to the silica gel. The humic substances were selected to secure appropriate variation of their structural features. The retention factors of 45 polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) to the four columns were determined by HPLC. The advantage of the technique is a large number of compounds can easily be studied. The binding procedure does not appear to cause a drastic selection between the HA molecules. The k' values obtained for the two Aldrich HA columns agree in general reasonably. The retention or sorption of the compounds increased with the size of the PAC and the number of lipophilic substituents, but decreased when polar substituents were present. The PAC retention was much stronger to the two HA columns than to the FA and blank column, both for hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and the polar PAC. Other factors impacting the PAC binding may be specific interactions with HA and the ionic strength of the aqueous phase. The technique has been applied to do direct determinations of Koc.
