Teratogenicity of vitamin B6 deficiency: omphalocele, skeletal and neural defects, and splenic hypoplasia.

Vitamin B(6) deficiency was induced in pregnant rats with a deficient diet and with 4-deoxypyridoxine, a B(6) antagonist. Treated animals developed typical skin changes of B(6) deficiency. Fetuses were small and appeared anemic. Major fetal malformations were omphalocele, exencephaly, cleft palate, micrognathia, digital defects, and splenic hypoplasia. This teratologic system was developed as a model for human syndromes that exhibit combined immunologic and neurologic or skeletal defects.

Pathological gamblers and alcoholics: do they share the same addictions?

This study examined the cross over between alcoholics and habitual gamblers. A group of Alcoholics Anonymous members (n = 30) and a group of pathological gamblers (Gamblers Anonymous members) (n = 23) and self-identified habitual gamblers (n = 21) were asked to respond to two inventories--the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS, Lesieur & Blume, 1987) and the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI-2, Miller, 1994). Results of our analyses suggested there were not significant degrees of cross over.

The WA Hospital Morbidity Data System: an evaluation of its performance and the impact of electronic data transfer.

The paper evaluates the performance of the Hospital Morbidity Data System, maintained by the Health Statistics Branch (HSB) of the Health Department of Western Australia (WA). The time taken to process discharge summaries was compared in the first and second halves of 1995, using the number of weeks taken to process 90% of all discharges and the percentage of records processed within four weeks as indicators of throughput. Both the hospitals and the HSB showed improvements in timeliness during the second half of the year. The paper also examines the impact of a recently introduced electronic data transfer system for WA country public hospitals on the timeliness of morbidity data. The processing time of country hospital records by the HSB was reduced to a similar time as for metropolitan hospitals, but the processing time in the hospitals increased, resulting in little improvement in total processing time.

Molecular mechanisms of associative learning in mammal and mollusc.

Recent work in this laboratory has begun to cast light on the biochemical mechanisms by which a cell stores associatively acquired information. This appears to occur principally via two general pathways. The first seems to be a long-term activation of protein kinase C (resulting in long-term alterations in protein phosphorylation) while the second involves changes in RNA synthesis. One striking aspect of these mechanisms in that they seem to be conserved across the species we have studied (rabbit and Hermissenda). In the present paper we review some of the studies that support the role of protein kinase C activation and RNA synthesis in memory formation.
