Forty-five patients with head and neck cancer were the subjects of the study. In most cases, plasma CEA was low and could not provide a significant clinical monitor. Two patients with poorly differentiated epidermoid carcinoma had low plasma CEA levels at the pretreatment stage, but after treatment, the levels tended to be higher because of distant metastasis. Tow other cases exhibiting undifferentiated carcinoma of the maxillary sinus at the pretreatment stage had abnormally high plasma CEA levels of 160 ng/ml and 46 ng/ml. These two patients proved the value of the correlation with cancer therapy and recurrence.

Morphological changes of interlobular bile ducts in asymptomatic or symptomatic primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and chronic hepatitis with ductal lesions were investigated. It was supposed that bile duct lesions found in PBC and chronic hepatitis could be distinguished histologically. There were identical epithelial changes between symptomatic PBC and asymptomatic one, but granulomas were more often found in asymptomatic PBC than in symptomatic PBC. Numbers of interlobular bile ducts per portal tract and the rates of portal tracts without interlobular duct in asymptomatic PBC were intermediate between symptomatic PBC and chronic hepatitis. Serial sections revealed that some bile ducts were able to be followed by ductules in asymptomatic PBC. From these results, numbers of interlobular bile ducts are undoubtedly decreased in asymptomatic PBC but not so much as in symptomatic one. This observation may be attributable partially for taking asymptomatic course.

ESK cells, a stable cell line derived from a swine embryo kidney, were found to be a good medium for plaque formation of the Prague and Miami strains of equine influenza virus. Factors influencing the plaque formation were investigated and a plaque assay for these viruses was worked out. The method is not only simple enough for routine use, but also is as sensitive as the egg inoculation method. The method was readily adapted for a neutralization test.

The effects of carotid body chemoreceptor stimulation by NaCN and sustained lung inflation on TTX-induced apneustic respiration were studied before and after picrotoxin in the rabbit. Intravenous and intracarotid injections of TTX (30-100 micrograms) induced the apneusis. The characteristic phrenic responses induced by NaCN and lung inflation were not observed during the TTX-induced apneusis. The results indicate that apneustic respiration induced by TTX may cause a reduction of spontaneous cell activity in the medulla and pons respiratory neurons. In TXX-treated animals, picrotoxin partially restored the excitatory phrenic responses by NaCN, whereas the lung inflation effects were not restored. Therefore, it is most likely that the TTX-resistant brain stem respiratory neurons may be stimulated by picrotoxin and this effect also acts to elevate the sensitivity of inspiratory neurons closely related to the PC neurons.

Single radial hemolysis (SRH), neutralization (NT), and hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests were carried out on sera from horses immunized against the Prague and Miami strains of equine influenza virus. The HI and NT tests demonstrated good sensitivity; the sensitivity of the SRH test was somewhat lower. The NT titers of individual sera were correlated very closely with the HI titers, although the NT titers were higher. SRH zone diameters of individual sera also showed significant correlation with the NT and NI titers. The SRH test appears to be suitable for large-scale serological surveys and offers the advantages of rapidity and simplicity.
A large malignant melanoma of the cheek with metastasis to a submandibular lymph node is described. The tumor was successfully treated by surgical excision and radical neck dissection followed by immunotherapy with intradermal injections of CWS (cell wall skeleton) of noocardia. The cheek and upper lip defects following tumor excision were reconstructed primarily by upward rotation of the cheek and neck skin flap and by lateral advancement of a full-thickness upper lip flap. The oral defect was closed by stretching the distal based mucosal flap from the lower half of the buccal mucosa.
A sequential administration of bleomycin in combination with mitomycin C was evaluated clinically and histologically in ten patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral region. The therapy was effective against seven primary lesions and one metastatic lesion with an evident tendency to remission, but was completely ineffective against recurrent carcinomas. Myelosuppression seemed to be a more important toxic effect than the bleomycin-induced pneumonitis. The mechanism of action of the therapy and indications in clinical application are discussed.
