Carcinoembryonic antigen in the bile in patients with pancreatic and biliary cancer. Correlation with cytology and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography.

The level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the bile of 17 patients with benign pancreatic and biliary diseases and 50 patients with pancreatic and biliary cancer were determined by enzyme immunoassay. The bile specimens were obtained at the time of percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography. The bile was centrifuged and the supernatant was used for CEA measurement, while the cell pellet was examined cytologically. High CEA values in the bile were significantly more frequent in patients with pancreatic and biliary cancer than in those with benign pancreatic or biliary diseases; increased CEA concentrations in the bile were observed in 76.0% and 60.0%, respectively, of all the patients and of the patients with localized cancer. The location of the cancer had no influence on the bile CEA level, but the CEA levels in the bile tended to be high when the tumor had distant metastases, or when the biliary tract was completely obstructed. Although patients with pancreatic and biliary cancer had a high CEA value in the bile significantly more frequently, bile CEA measurement is not sufficient to distinguish an individual patient with pancreatic or biliary cancer from those with other disease, since the overlap between the values is too great, and therefore, additional examinations are required. Correct diagnosis of malignancy were made by cytological examination alone, by bile CEA assay alone and visual examination of dye in the biliary tract alone in 72.0, 76.0, and 88.0% respectively, of the patients examined, while the combination of these methods raised the diagnostic rate to 100%.

The fine structure of the merozoites and gametocytes of Leucocytozoon caulleryi.

The fine structure of the merozoites and gametocytes of Leucocytozoon caulleryi from the peripheral blood of chickens was studied by means of electron microscopy. Merozoites are oval to elongate and are surrounded by a pellicle. They possess a large nucleus, numerous ribosomes, microtubules, a mitochondrion with tubular cristae, a cytostome, an apical complex consisting of three polar rings, electron-dense paired rhoptries, and micronemes. Mature gametocytes are irregular in shape and are surrounded by a three layered pellicle, and contain a large nucleus, mitochondria with tubular cristae, endoplasmic reticulum, numerous ribosomes, food vacuoles, cytostomes, and lipid inclusions. Macrogametocytes are easily distinguished from the microgametocytes by more ribosome concentration and the presence of well developed endoplasmatic reticulum.

Comparative observations on some bionomics of Japanese ixodid ticks under laboratory cultural conditions.

Seventeen species of Japanese ixodid ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Boophilus, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes, and Rhipicephalus were reared in the laboratory under almost the same cultural conditions. Their major biological characters, such as feeding, molting, oviposition, and hatching, were summarized in tables. There were some differences in these bionomics among the species. The general characteristics common to all the ticks, except Amblyomma testudinarium, were as follows. The feeding period in immature stages and adult females was 3 approximately 5 and 7 approximately 14 days, respectively. The engorged body weight in larvae, numphs, and females was 0.3 approximately 0.5, 3.5 approximately 5.0, and 100 approximately 300 mg, respectively. The potential sexuality could be estimated from the nymphal engorged weight in five species. The larval and nymphal molting periods at 25 degrees C were alike, or 10 approximately 20 days, and there were no significant sexual differences in nymphal molting period among six species. The body weight just after molting in nymphs, males, and females was 0.25 approximately 0.3, 1 approximately 2, and 2 approximately 3 mg, respectively. The pre-oviposition, oviposition, and egg-incubation periods at 25 degrees C were 4 approximately 10 days, 2 approximately 3 weeks, and 1 month, respectively.
