White matter hyperintensities may correspond to areas of increased blood volume: correlative MR and PET observations.

A method for correlating positron emission tomography with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging enabled the authors to examine the high intensity white matter areas in T2-weighted images in patients with internal carotid artery occlusion. The high intensity areas showed increased cerebral blood volume compared with the ipsilateral and contralateral normal intensity white matter. This observation may have relevance in explaining some of the patchy white matter lesions seen in MR images.

Effects of adenosine diphosphate administration on the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex of rabbits.

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) injection into a unilateral vertebral artery in rabbits decreased per-rotational nystagmus; the nystagmus beating toward the injected side was predominantly suppressed. This influence became obvious when the animal's blood pressure was low. Field potentials were recorded in the vestibular nuclei upon electric stimulation of the vestibular labyrinth. ADP administration into the vertebral artery also suppressed the amplitude of vestibular evoked potentials (VEPs). Effects of ADP upon the vestibulo-ocular reflex and VEP were considered to be due to regional ischemia induced by the microemboli, which consisted of platelet aggregation.

Adhesion preventive effect of a novel hyaluronic acid gel film in rats.

This study evaluated the efficacy of a novel hyaluronic acid (HA) gel for preventing adhesions in a rat caecal model. The gel was manufactured from an acidic HA solution using a freezing procedure. HA gel films with four different half-lives (50-200 h) in physiological buffered saline at 37 degrees C were prepared, by regulating the freezing time, and tested. The HA gel film was applied as a barrier on the injured caecal surface after standardized treatment with a rotary abrasion apparatus. A control group of 20 animals were abraded in the same way but not treated. Seven days after the initial operation, the incidence and severity of any adhesions were recorded. Application of the HA gel film significantly reduced the incidence and severity of adhesion formation in all treatment groups compared with the control group. This novel HA gel film is effective for reducing post-operative adhesions in this rat model and the resorption rate is optimum for adhesion prevention on the caecal surface.

Modulation of the visuo-ocular reflex by the vestibulo-ocular reflex in peripheral vision.

Peripheral OKN was produced by stimulating the visual field with a special device, designed by Miyoshi et al. Stimuli to induce peripheral OKN and rotatory nystagmus (RN) were applied to the same subject simultaneously. The results obtained were as follows. 1) In the case of the whole visual field, with a target velocity of 30 degrees/sec the combined slow-phase velocity of OKN and RN was also a constant 30 degrees/s in any phase of rotation of the subject and with any combinations of the rotationary directions of subject and target. 2) In the case of the peripheral visual field; when both OKN and RN were in the same direction, the slow-phase velocity of the combined OKN was 10-20% greater than that of the peripheral OKN alone. However, the combined OKN never exceeded the velocity of the target. In contrast, when OKN and RN directions were opposed, combined OKN was correspondingly decreased by about the same 10-20% amount.
