Computed tomography of Moyamoya disease: demonstration of occluded arteries and collateral vessels as important diagnostic signs.

Diagnosis of moyamoya disease primarily depends on the angiographic demonstration of stenosis and occlusion of the carotid bifurcation, and extensive parenchymal and leptomeningeal collaterals. According to previous reports, computed tomography (CT) reveals multiple low density areas in the brain, with atrophic changes. Based on this review of six cases, CT with contrast enhancement often reveals tortuous, curvilinear vessels in the basal ganglia, corresponding to extensive parenchymal and leptomeningeal collaterals on angiography. The most proximal portions of the anterior and middle cerebral arteries are often poorly visualized. When multiple low density areas or subarachnoid hemorrhages are encountered on CT, these findings in the basal ganglia should be sought for differential diagnosis.

Potentiating effect of lithium chloride on methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in mice.

Single administration of LiCl potentiated the methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in mice, without affecting the concentration of methamphetamine in brain. During MAO inhibition, the level of 3-methoxytyramine (3-MT), an O-methylated metabolite of dopamine, was reduced by LiCl, but the elevated 3-MT level observed after the administration of methamphetamine was not influenced by LiCl.

[Therapeutic effect of pipemidic acid trihydrate on urinary tract infections (author's transl)].

Twenty-seven cases of urinary tract infection were treated with daily dose of 1.5 g of pipemidic acid trihydrate. Duration of drug administration varied between 7 and 28 days. The patients were consisted of acute cystitis (10), underlying disease (5) and complicated infection after long period catheterization (12). Following results were obtained: 1. Organisms cultured before treatment were sensitive to pipemidic acid trihydrate. 2. First and second classes of patients were cured by the treatment, however, patients having indwelling catheter were not changed on the view of culture. 3. No serious side effect was observed including hepatic and renal function, and blood.

Potentiating effect of lithium chloride on aggressive behavior induced in mice by nialamide plus L-DOPA and by clonidine.

Effects of acute administration of LiCl on aggressive behavior and alterations in brain norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) contents induced by nialamide plus L-DOPA and by clonidine were examined in mice. Effects of LiCl on turnover and metabolism of brain NE were also investigated. LiCl potentiated the aggressiveness induced by both nialamide plus L-DOPA and by clonidine. Increase in levels of brain NE, DA and 5-HT by nialamide plus L-DOPA was not affected by LiCl. The potentiating effect of LiCl on clonidine aggression was not observed in mice pretreated with disulfiram. Although LiCl did not alter the steady state levels of brain NE, DA and 5-HT, it increased the turnover of NE and decreased the content of endogenous normetanephrine. These results favour the assumption that lithium reduces the ability of nerve terminal vesicles to store NE leading to an increased turnover and decreased concentration of NE at receptor sites.
