Thin flexible oxygen cathodes coated with heparin-dispersed cellulose diacetate were prepared for an intravascular monitoring of blood pO2. The effect of the thickness of cellulose diacetate on various characteristics of the cathode, such as its sensitivity, response, residual current, moving artefact, linearity, and protection against poisoning, were measured. Coating with six to ten layers of 7.5% cellulose diacetate resulted in a high level of protection for cathode against poisoning by blood constituents, while still leaving a sufficiently rapid response. An instillation system using heparinized saline has been designed for further prevention of local blood coagulation. At the same time this system maintains a stable conductance of the salt bridge and furthermore, enables in vivo calibration of the cathode sensitivity by supplying an instillation solution of a known oxygen tension. Using this electrode system, various intravascular pO2 measurements have been carried out, and one representative result is shown. The advantages and disadvantages of this type of separated electrode system compared with the combined type electrode are also discussed in detail.

A convenient method for the determination of trace amounts of 137Cs in agricultural and livestock products was studied by use of a low back-ground beta-ray spectrometer. Simplification, rapidification and accuracy in the determination of trace amounts of 137Cs in environmental samples were aimed at and designed. The beta-ray spectra, which were measured by the low back-ground beta-ray spectrometer on the counting sample after chemical separation (AMP-H2PtCl6 method), were analyzed by means of the weighted least squares method using an automatic analyzer, and then radioactivities of 40K, 87Rb and 137Cs were determined. The results obtained by this method were in good agreement with the results obtained by conventional method using a low back-ground GM counter after chemical separation (AMP-Bio-Rex.40-H2PtCl6 method) in the determination of 137Cs, and then applicability for environmental samples was studied. The radioactivity of 137Cs only could be determined by this method without using Bio-Rex.40 cation exchange resin to remove impurities such as 40K and 67Rb.
The Japanese and Russian strains of Theileria sergenti were compared clinico-hematologically and serologically. They were subjected to passage in splenectomized calves 4 approximately 8 months old by the infectation of infected ticks or the inoculation of infected blood. As a result, the average of incubation of the Japanese strain was proved to be 23 days by the tick infection and 21 days by the inoculation of infected blood stored in a frozen state. The rate of detection and the average size of various forms of Theileria in the proliferative stage of the Japanese strain were as follows: Comma-shaped and bacilli forms, 86.8%; bacilli from 2.15 x 0.73 micron; oval and spherical forms, 11.3% and 1.97 x 1.22 and 1.46 micron, respectively; tetracoccal form and anaplasma-like form, 0.9 and 1.0%, respectively, and 0.54 micron in diameter. The highest parasitic rate of the Japanese strain was 11.9% on the average, and the rate of decrease in erythrocyte count 70.6% on the average. Rods were seen in protozoa particularly rich in cytoplasm. Such symptoms as pyrexia, depression, and anorexia appeared as Theileria propagated. No hemoglobinuria occurred or no schizonts were detected. Essentially the same results were obtained from the Russian strain as from the Japanese. Besides, Haemaphysalis longicornis produced in Japan acted also as a vector for the Russian strain. There was a good serological agreement between the Japanese and the russian strain in the results of the cross complement fixation test and the cross indirect fluorescent antibody test. There was no difference in the results of the complement fixation with the eight strains of the Japanese strain.

Immunofluorescent methods were used to study the serological relationships between a Japanese Babesia species and three other Babesia species (B major, B bigemina and B bovis). All the sera were obtained at intervals from five splenectomised calves each infected experimentally with five strains of the four parasites. The antibody titre of each serum was determined by the use of homologous and heterologous antigens. The reactions between homologous antigens and their serial antisera were consistently higher than those obtained with heterologous antigens. It was concluded that the Japanese Babesia species (Miyake strain) was distinguished from B major (British and Dutch strains), B bigemina (Kochinda strain) and B bovis (Miyara strain).

A prospective clinical trial was undertaken in 121 patients with stomach cancer to compare immunochemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and FT-207 combined with OK-432 or PS-K, immunostimulators, and plain chemotherapy with 5-fluororacil and FT-207. Of the 121 patients who received immunochemotherapy, 67 patients (group A) had undergone curative removal of the tumor. The other 54 patients had undergone noncurative tumor removal or had recurrence after non-curative tumor removal and they were divided into two groups (groups B and C) on the basis of lymphocyte reactivity induced with PHA. Although group A exhibited a significant increase in PHA-induced lymphocyte transformation and a trifling increase in lymphocyte counts, its survival rate within a 36 month period did not differ from that of the peer controls. Group B, composed of 21 patients showing improvement of PHA-induced lymphocyte transformation, significantly prolonged its survival compared to the peer controls. The survival of group C, composed of 33 patients showing a gradual drop in PHA-induced lymphocyte transformation, was not prolonged compared to the peer control patients; and they showed significant decreases in lymphocyte counts. The overall survival of group B and group C was not superior to that of the 48 peer controls.
1,3-Bis(tetrahydro-2-furanyl)-5-fluorouracil (FD-1) is a new masked compound of fluorinated pyrimidine and a derivative of 1-(tetrahydro-2-furanyl)-5-fluorouracil (FT-207). The pharmacokinetics of FD-1 and FT-207 were compared in the livers and kidneys of control mice and in mice (DD males) pretreated with phenobarbital. The half-time in the liver of FD-1 orally administered was about 40 minutes, whereas that of FT-207 in the liver was about 3 hours. Hepatic concentrations of 5-fluorouracil (FUra) originating from FD-1 were three to five times as much as those originating from FT-207. FD-1 formed 3-(tetrahydro-2-furanyl)-5-fluorouracil (3-T-F-FU) and FT-207 by a ratio of about 3 to 10, respectively. Although FD-1 had a short period of half reduction, FT-207 and 3-T-F-FU had a half-time lasting for 3--4 hours. In contrast, the renal concentration of FD-1 was one-third that of FT-207. Oral administration of FD-1 to the mice pretreated with phenobarbital elevated the FT-207 and 3-T-F-FU levels in the livers to twice the levels in the control mice and further elevated the FUra levels in the livers to twice the levels in the controls. These results indicate that FD-1 is catabolized in the liver by microsomal enzymes (including cytochrome P450) faster than is FT-207, which consequently enlarges the hepatic pool of the intermediates on the way to FUra formation.
