Cytosine arabinoside (ara-C), an antiproliferative agent, was given subcutaneously to Sprague-Dawley rats on the 2-4th postnatal day in doses of 12.5 and 25 mg/kg/day. Body weight and viability were found to be dose-dependently inhibited. The appearance of audio-startle response was delayed in the group on the high dose and up to 21 days of age, the ambulatory behavior resembled that seen in geriatric rats. The free-fall righting reflex failed to appear in the treated groups. The open field test revealed that only the treated females were hypoactive. The treated group showed a poor neuro-muscular ability in the rotarod performance and impairment of acquiring conditioned and unconditioned avoidance response in pole climbing. Histopathological and biochemical studies revealed a hypoplasia of the cerebellum. These findings are suggestive of behavioral dysfunction caused by ara-C-induced cerebellar disorders.
Levamisole was administered to chickens previously inoculated with Merek's disease virus (MDV) or infected by contact, and the influence of the drug on the mortality rate of Merek's disease (MD) was examined. The chickens inoculated with MDV and then administered levamisole (3 mg/bird) began to die earlier than chickens not treated with levamisole. However, the chickens infected with MDV by contact and then treated with the levamisole had delayed deaths. When the capacity of peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) to inhibit MDV plaque formation on chicken kidney cell (CKC) cultures was examined, the inhibitory activity of PEC from chickens inoculated with MDV and treated with levamisole at 4 days or 2 months of age was much weaker than that of PEC from chickens of the same ages that were not treated with levamisole. This effect was also noted when levamisole was added to CKC cultures to examine the inhibitory activity of PEC from MDV-infected chickens not treated with levamisole. These results indicate that the administration of levamisole to MDV-inoculated chickens in doses used in the present experiment suppressed the macrophage restriction on MDV replication and hastened the death of chickens by MD during the early course of infection.
When various indicator cells, including virus transformed and nontransformed cells, were cocultivated with bovine leukemia virus-producing cells, strong positive syncytia formation was found in transformed cells one day after cocultivation. The results of comparison of bovine leukemia virus antibody titers and the detection of bovine leukemia by the syncytium assay showed 89% of serologically positive cows were positive for bovine leukemia virus, whereas no reactors were found in serologically negative cows. However, the frequency of bovine leukemia virus detection differed according to the difference of incubation periods in the syncytium assay. Therefore, it is important to choose the appropriate indicator cell and culture conditions for the detection of bovine leukemia virus in the syncytium assay.

Multistage treadmill stress testing was performed in 24 patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy using Bruce protocol. 5 patients were considered to have hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), 12 hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy (HCM) and 7 congestive cardiomyopathy (CCM). Heart rate, systemic blood pressure, electrocardiographic changes and exercise tolerance were observed. The effect of propranolol on exercise tolerance was investigated in HOCM and HCM. 1) Exercise duration was less in patients with HCM and HOCM than in normal subjects (50 subjects) and greater than in 50 anginal patients. In CCM, exercise duration was the least. 2) Electrocardiographic changes observed in HCM and HOCM were increase of T waves and lessening of ST depression. In CCM, appearance of ventricular arrhythmia was noted in 4 of 7 patients. 3) Maximam exercise tolerance was reached at Bruce state III-IV in HOCM, stage III in HCM and stage II in CCM. 4) Propranolol administration resulted in improvement of exercise tolerance in 3 of 7 patients with HOCM and HCM.

Three-dimensional structures of the core of Marek's disease virus and herpesvirus of turkey were examined by the tilting apparatus of an electron microscope. Various types of the core found in the infected cells were considered to represent developmental stages of the viruses. The basic structure of the core consisted of a toroid surrounding a cylindrical mass, which was clearly demonstrated by tilting the core in two directions. A cylindrical mass spooled by more than two toroids, which seemed to constitute a spiral band of 10 to 20 nm, was demonstrated. The maturation process of the cores of the viruses was also discussed.
