Delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity in children with severe multiple handicaps treated with phenytoin.

Peripheral lymphocyte counts, T-cell and B-cell populations, DNCB skin reactions, Mantoux reactions, mitogenic transformation using PHA, and determination of serum phenytoin concentration were carried out in 45 children with severe handicaps. Twenty two of these patients were receiving phenytoin treatment. When compared with control subjects, the skin reactions were significantly depressed in the handicapped children, amongst whom those treated with phenytoin had more impaired reactions than those who were untreated. No significant relationship between the results of the skin reactions and the other parameters was found.

The effect of myo-inositol deficiency on lipid metabolism in rats. III. The mechanism of an enhancement in lipolysis due to myo-inositol deficiency in rats.

myo-Inositol deficiency in rats produced an overaccumulation of triacylglycerols in the liver due to stimulated lipolysis in the adipose tissue (Hayashi, E., Maeda, T. and Tomita, T. (1974) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 360, 134--155). The mechanism of the enhancement in lipolysis has now been investigated. The lipolytic response to adrenalin, corticotropin and insulin of the epididymal adipose tissue did not change due to the deficiency, but hormone-sensitive lipase activity, plasma adrenalin level and blood pressure were higher in the deficient rats. Adrenalectomy had no influence, but administration of sympathetic nervous blockers (reserpine, hexamethonium and bupranolol) inhibited the liver lipid deposition and an increase of serum free fatty acids in the deficient rats. These results indicate that the enhancement in lipolysis is mediated by an excitation of sympathetic nerve terminals innervating in the adipose tissues.

Interaction between Sendai virus and KB cell lines with altered cell fusion ability: a study employing electron spin resonance.

The nature of the interaction between Sendai virus and Sil mutant cells was examined by measuring a change in ESR spectrum of spin-labeled phosphatidylcholine molecules on the viral envelope. When spin-labeled virus was incubated with the Sil cells that had a reduced ability to respond to virus-induced cell fusion, interchange of the phospholipid molecules between viral envelope and cell surface membrane occurred to a smaller extent than that observed with parental cells. Moreover, the degree of the interchanging correlated with the degree of the fusion capacity of the mutant lines. The results show that the mutant cells carry such a lesion(s) on their surface membranes that the viral envelopes can hardly fuse into them.

Increased concentration of 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate and 67Ga-citrate in extracranial bone metastases from pinealoma.

A rare case of extracranial bone metastases from pinealoma is reported. 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate and 67Ga-citrate scans were of great clinical value in confirming the presence of bone metastases. Bone lesions were positively delineated by both radionuclides, but the concentration of 67Ga-citrate was more extensive than that of 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate.

Does a temperature gradient exist across the mucogingival junction?

On the assumption that the colour difference between attached gingiva and alveolar mucosa is accompanied by a temperature difference, twenty subjects with a high standard of oral health were studied. Five points on either side of the mucogingival junction were examined by means of a thermocouple probe. A mean difference amounting to about 2/3 degrees C was found between the surface temperatures of the two structures.

Age changes in the perception of comfortable mandibular occlusal positions.

It has been shown that a zone of comfort in maxillo-mandibular relationships in edentulous subjects can be identified with some precision. Whilst the neurophysiological mechanism involved has not been explained fully, the phenomenon is influenced by starting position and by fatigue. This experiment was set up to test the hypothesis that age is another significant factor in perception of the comfortable zone. A group of seventeen subjects with a mean age of 62 years and an equivalent younger group, the mean age of which was 28 years, were tested with Timmer screw jacks applied using the central approach to record the upper and lower limits of the zone fifteen times in succession for each subject. A linear statistical model was used to analyse the data from upper and lower borders separately. The results showed that the effect of making successive adjustments, whilst not significant statistically in the young group, was significant in the more elderly. Regression lines from the young group data were horizontal signifying the high degree of accuracy with which their perceptual mechanisms worked: the upwards inclination of those from the more elderly was interpreted as showing that initial appreciations were subjected to constant correction.

Clinical evaluation of tumor imaging with 201 TI chloride.

201TI was used as an imaging agent in 173 malignant tumors and 76 benign lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 0.64, 0.61, and 0.63, respectively. Sensitivity was good in thyroid cancer (0.91) and fair in primary lung cancer (0.70) and primary liver cancer (0.71). Compared with 67Ga, 201TI appears to have a higher sensitivity in thyroid cancer and nearly the same sensitivity in primary lung cancer. 201TI might be useful in distinguishing cold thyroid nodules and in differentiating primary liver cancer from metastases.

Some clinical and epizootological observations of infectious sialoadenitis in rats.

Epizootological and clinical observation was made of infectious sialoadenitis ocurring at a rat facility. The disease occurred mostly among animals 8 to 64 weeks of age without specific relevance with sex and age, and clinical signs disappeared within 5 days after the onset. Morbidity rates and duration of epizootics ranged from 13 to 100% and from 5 to 32 days, respectively. Most rats having severe clinical signs of sialoadenitis showed decrease in food uptake, body weight loss and remarkable disorders of estrous cycles.
