Experimental and clinical studies of "Shen Yan Ling" in treatment of chronic glomerulonephritis.

"Shen Yan Ling" (SYL) is a compound herbal preparation consisting of 16 ingredients: Herba Ecliptae, Radix Rhemanniae, Rhizoma Cibotii, Radix Angelica Sinensis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Rhizoma Diosocoreae, Poria, Radix Sanguisorbae, Radix Rubiae, Herba Portulacae, Fructus Gardeniae, Herba Cirsii Japonici, Herba Cephalanoploris, etc. In animal experiments, SYL was shown to have therapeutic effect for Masugi's nephritis models. It has also been used with satisfactory results in the treatment of 314 cases of chronic glomerulonephritis of the common type with manifestations of Yin deficiency and endogenous heat.

[Alpha-hANP-like immunoreactivity in lung cancer].

Specific radioimmunoassay and immunohistochemical method of alpha-human atrial natriuretic polypeptide (alpha-hANP) was established to diagnose one case of large cell lung carcinoma (clear cell carcinoma) proved by pathology. It was found that there was alpha-hANP-like immunoreactivity in the cancer cells at a concentration of 147.5 pg/mg protein. Chromatography analysis showed that alpha-hANP-like immunoreactive materials had multiple molecular forms. The significance of these phenomena remains to be further investigated.

Cytokinins from the Moss Physcomitrella patens.

Gametophore-over-producing mutants of the moss, Physcomitrella patens, when grown in liquid culture export high levels of cytokinin into their culture medium. The cytokinin produced by these mutants is postulated to account for their peculiar phenotype, that of mosses treated with exogenous cytokinin. N(6)-(Delta(2)-isopentenyl)adenine, the major cytokinin, has been identified previously in two of these mutants (Wang, Cove, Beutelmann, Hartmann 1980 Phytochemistry 19: 1103-1105) and now in additional representatives. A second cytokinin, zeatin, has been identified by its chromatographic behavior and mass spectrum including chemical ionization mass spectrometry of its permethyl derivative.

Cytokinin Biosynthesis in Mutants of the Moss Physcomitrella patens.

Three cytokinin-over-producing mutants of the moss, Physcomitrella patens, have been shown to convert [8-(14)C]adenine to N(6)-[(14)C](Delta(2)-isopentenyl)adenine, the presence of which was confirmed by thin layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, and recrystallization to constant specific radioactivity. The labeled cytokinin was detected in the culture medium within 6 hours and the tissue itself appears to contain both labeled N(6)-(Delta(2)-isopentenyl)adenine and N(6)-(Delta(2)-isopentenyl)adenosine monophosphate.

Inhibition of interleukin 2 driven proliferation of mouse CTLL2 cells, by selected carbamate and organophosphate insecticides and congeners of carbaryl.

The anticholinesterase (antiCHE) insecticides, a large family of pesticides used extensively throughout the world, inhibit serine hydrolases by carbamylating or phosphorylating a serine residue at the catalytic site. These insecticides are viewed as potential inhibitors of serine hydrolase-dependent immune functions including interleukin 2 (IL2) signalling. Previous studies in our laboratory have demonstrated that carbaryl (an antiCHE insecticide) produces a marked concentration-dependent inhibition of IL2 driven 1) proliferation of mouse CTLL2 cells, 2) proliferation of human natural killer (NK) cells, and 3) enhancement of target cell killing by human NK cells. In the present study, we examined the potential of 8 antiCHE insecticides (4 carbamates and 4 organophosphates) to inhibit IL2-dependent proliferation of mouse CTLL2 cells. The order of potency for T cell inhibition was carbaryl = dichlorvos > methiocarb > carbofuran > paraoxon > mevinphos > aldicarb = monocrotophos. In view of the relatively high inhibitory potency of carbaryl (a carbamate with low cholinergic toxicity), 3 metabolites and 5 congeners of carbaryl were tested for potency to inhibit CTLL2 proliferation. The data indicate a significant contribution of the 1-naphthol leaving group to inhibition of T cell proliferation by carbaryl, and are consistent with inhibition of a serine hydrolase(s) as a mechanism contributing to the observed inhibition of IL2-dependent proliferation.

Tuberculous pseudotumor causing biliary obstruction. Report of a case with diagnosis by fine needle aspiration biopsy and bile cytology.

Hepatobiliary tuberculosis is a rare but distinct clinical entity. We report an unusual case of biliary tract obstruction due to localized hepatic tuberculosis with periportal tuberculous adenitis. The lesion mimicked a malignancy clinically and radiologically. Fine needle aspiration biopsy revealed granulomas, epithelioid histiocytes and Langhans' giant cells. The cytodiagnosis was confirmed by identification of acid-fast bacilli in the bile cytology and isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by culture. The patient responded to antituberculosis therapy. The usefulness of bile cytology in the diagnostic management of biliary tract obstruction is illustrated.
