The role of pigmentation, ultraviolet radiation tolerance, and leaf colonization strategies in the epiphytic survival of phyllosphere bacteria.

Phenotypic mechanisms that enhance bacterial UVR survival typically include pigmentation and DNA repair mechanisms which provide protection from UVA and UVB wavelengths, respectively. In this study, we examined the contribution of pigmentation to field survival in Clavibacter michiganensis and evaluated differences in population dynamics and leaf colonization strategies. Two C. michiganensis pigment-deficient mutants were significantly reduced in UVA radiation survival in vitro; one of these mutants also exhibited reduced field populations on peanut when compared to the wild-type strain over the course of replicate 25-day experiments. The UVR-tolerant C. michiganensis strains G7.1 and G11.1 maintained larger epiphytic field populations on peanut compared to the UVR-sensitive C. michiganensis T5.1. Epiphytic field populations of C. michiganensis utilized the strategy of solar UVR avoidance during leaf colonization resulting in increased strain survival on leaves after UVC irradiation. These results further demonstrate the importance of UVR tolerance in the ability of bacterial strains to maintain population size in the phyllosphere. However, an examination of several bacterial species from the peanut phyllosphere and a collection of environmental Pseudomonas spp. revealed that sensitivity to UVA and UVC radiation was correlated in some but not all of these bacteria. These results underscore a need to further understand the biological effects of different solar wavelength groups on microbial ecology.

Chaotic control and synchronization for system identification.

Research into applications of synchronized chaotic systems assumes that it will be necessary to build many different drive-response pairs, but little is known in general about designing higher dimensional chaotic flows. In this paper, I do not add any design techniques, but I show that it is possible to create multiple drive-response pairs from one chaotic system by applying chaos control techniques to the drive and response systems. If one can design one chaotic system with the desired properties, then many drive-response pairs can be built from this system, so that it is not necessary to solve the design problem more than once. I show both numerical simulations and experimental work with chaotic circuits. I also test the response systems for ability to overcome noise or other interference.

Low-frequency switching in a transistor amplifier.

It is known from extensive work with the diode resonator that the nonlinear properties of a P-N junction can lead to period doubling, chaos, and other complicated behaviors in a driven circuit. There has been very little work on what happens when more than one P-N junction is present. In this work, the first step towards multiple P-N junction circuits is taken by doing both experiments and simulations with a single-transistor amplifier using a bipolar transistor. Period doubling and chaos are seen when the amplifier is driven with signals between 100 kHz and 1 MHz, and they coincide with a very low frequency switching between different period doubled (or chaotic) wave forms. The switching frequencies are between 5 and 10 Hz. The switching behavior was confirmed in a simplified model of the transistor amplifier.

Chaotic communications that are difficult to detect.

Work on self-synchronizing systems for communications has had limited practicality because the chaotic signals were not as easy to detect in the presence of noise as conventional spread-spectrum signals. This difficulty may actually be an advantage in some cases, where one wants to conceal the existence of the communications signal. Conventional communications signals are cyclostationary; while they may look random, they have statistical properties that vary periodically. One may design chaotic communication signals that lack this cyclostationary property, and therefore are harder to detect.

Parameter ranges for the onset of period doubling in the diode resonator.

One of the classic problems in the study of nonlinear dynamics has been the diode resonator. Previous work with the diode resonator sought to explain the causes of period doubling and chaos, and often used simplified models. This paper instead seeks to link the onset of nonlinear dynamical effects to measurable parameters by comparing experiments and numerical models.

Detecting functional relationships between simultaneous time series.

We describe a method to characterize the predictability and functionality between two simultaneously generated time series. This nonlinear method requires minimal assumptions and can be applied to data measured either from coupled systems or from different positions on a spatially extended system. This analysis generates a function statistic, Theta(c(0)), that quantifies the level of predictability between two time series. We illustrate the utility of this procedure by presenting results from a computer simulation and two experimental systems.

Noise-resistant chaotic synchronization.

The practical applications of self-synchronizing chaotic systems are greatly limited by their sensitivity to noise. Even small amounts of noise added to the synchronizing signal can degrade synchronization to the point where information encoded on the chaotic signal can't be recovered. In this paper, I show that it is possible to build chaotic circuits that operate on two different time scales. The separation of time scales allows the low frequency part of the circuit to average out noise added to the synchronizing signal. Adjusting the relative time scales of the two parts of the circuit allow one to make the synchronization error arbitrarily close to the error caused by circuit mismatch for any amount of added noise.

Functional dependence and quasiperiodicity in the spatiotemporal dynamics of yttrium iron garnet films.

When thin films of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) are placed in a magnetic field and driven at microwave (rf) frequencies, nonlinear interactions within the material cause the normal microwave spin precession to be modulated at lower frequencies. We measure these lower frequency (kHz) signals at two spatially separated locations on the YIG film and use linear and nonlinear analysis to study the functional dependence of the spin dynamics at one location on the spin dynamics at the other location. We see dynamical states where nonlinear analysis can detect a functional dependence that the linear analysis fails to reveal.

Spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics of a magnetoelastic ribbon.

Magnetoelastic materials have a strong coupling between strain and magnetization, so applying a magnetic field to a magnetoelastic material can change its shape. This coupling leads to interesting dynamics. We have studied the dynamics of a wide ribbon of Metglass 2605sc which was driven by a magnetic field. The ribbon was suspended as a pendulum in a set of Helmholtz coils, which provided both dc and ac magnetic fields. Laser light was reflected off the ribbon to measure its angular displacement. Two points on the ribbon could be simultaneously illuminated, and one of the laser beams could be scanned over the ribbon. We observed quasiperiodic bifurcations in the motion of the ribbon, and characterized the spatial aspect of the motion with some recently developed statistics.

Using unstable periodic orbits to overcome distortion in chaotic signals.

Proposals to use chaos for communications have been hindered by the fact that broadband chaotic signals are distorted by narrow band or frequency dependent communications channels. I show in this paper how the unstable periodic orbits from a chaotic attractor may be used to estimate the parameters of a filter that has acted on a signal from that attractor and estimate the chaotic signal, even when additive noise larger than the chaotic signal is present.

The advanced practice nurse role in implementing and evaluating two nurse-managed wellness clinics: lessons learned about structure, process, and outcomes.

By the year 2000, the baby boom generation will be reaching its sixth decade and 34 million U.S. citizens will be over the age of 65. One strategy for promoting healthy aging is having older persons participate in health promotion programs. Nurse-managed wellness clinics (NMWCs) staffed by advanced practice nurses (APNs) offer an option for health promotion among older individuals. This article describes the APN role in implementing and evaluating two NMWCs for older people living in urban, high-rise apartment buildings subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Lessons learned about structure, process, and outcomes in a community-based wellness center are identified and discussed.
