[A case of successful operation of acute pulmonary embolism due to right ventricular thrombus detected by two-dimensional echocardiography].

A 44-year-old woman suddenly developed dyspnea and loss of consciousness four days after cholecystectomy. Under the diagnosis of acute pulmonary embolism, the patient was treated with anticoagulant with temporary relief of her symptoms. But emergency embolectomy was performed because of large right ventricular thrombus detected by two-dimensional echocardiography. Many reports suggest a relationship between pulmonary embolism and right-sided cardiac thrombi. We consider that two-dimensional echocardiography is essential in case of acute pulmonary embolism.

Effect of food deprivation on regional brain glucose utilization in lean and fatty Zucker rats.

Regional brain glucose utilization was investigated in lean and fatty Zucker rats when feeding status was changed. Ad-lib-fed fat rats exhibited lower glucose utilization in the central amygdala than ad-lib-fed lean rats. Food deprivation for 72 h enhanced glucose utilization in the ventromedial hypothalamus, lateral hypothalamic area of both phenotypes, hippocampus of fat rats, mammillary body and ventral tegmental area of leans. These results suggest association of the central amygdala with the development of genetic obesity and of the latter 5 areas with hunger-motivated behaviors.

Serotonin involvement in the inhibition of luteinizing hormone (LH) release induced by prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in castrated male rats.

p-Chlorophenylalanine (PCPA, 320 mg/kg i.p.), an inhibitor of serotonin (5-HT) synthesis, and 5,6-dihydroxy-tryptamine (5,6-DHT, 50 micrograms i.c.v.), a drug toxic to the indoleaminergic system were used to test the involvement of 5-HT in the mediation of the inhibitory effect of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) on luteinizing hormone (LH) release in castrated male rats. The i.c.v. administration of PGD2 suppressed the episodic LH release characteristic of castrated rats and decreased mean plasma LH levels and mean LH pulse amplitude significantly. Pretreatment with PCPA or 5,6-DHT apparently eliminated the inhibitory effect of PGD2 on LH secretion. These results suggest the possible involvement of a serotonergic mechanism in the mediation of the suppression of LH secretion induced by PGD2 in castrated male rats.

Use of pulse oximetry for monitoring tracheostomy tube obstruction.

Experimental studies were performed on dogs for monitoring postoperative tracheostomy tube obstruction using a pulse oximeter. While a 25% obstruction of the cross-sectional area of the tube did not alter the oxygen saturation, obstruction of 40% and above resulted in a drop in the oxygen saturation level which corresponded to the degree of obstruction. The greater the degree of obstruction, the sooner was the fall of oxygen saturation. Therefore a pulse oximeter could be effectively put to use to monitor tracheostomy tube obstruction.

Effects of food deprivation and high fat diet on opioid receptor binding in rat brain.

The effect of food deprivation for 72 h or a high fat diet on [3H]naloxone binding in the discrete brain regions of male lean Zucker rats was studied. In the midbrain, both treatments increased Bmax for the high-affinity site with no change in Kd. In the cortex, the high fat diet increased Bmax for the high-affinity site. These results suggest that dietary manipulations could produce significant changes in the endogenous opioid system.

Effect of food deprivation on opioid receptor binding in the brain of lean and fatty Zucker rats.

The effect of food deprivation on opioid receptor binding was studied in 6 brain regions of lean and fatty Zucker rats; using [3H]dynorphin A. There was no significant difference between lean and fatty rats fed ad libitum in binding parameters for any regions studied. Food deprivation increased Bmax and/or Kd for cortex, midbrain and striatum of lean rats, and the former two regions of fatty rats. These results suggest that food deprivation may influence opioid receptor binding in lean and fatty Zucker rats.

Amniogenic band anomalies in a fifth-month fetus and in a newborn from maternal oophorectomy during early pregnancy.

A fifth-month fetus and a newborn with amniogenic band anomalies were examined at autopsy. Both specimens were obtained from women who had undergone oophorectomy during early pregnancy. The dead male fetus was aborted spontaneously, and had a micrognathia, a right club foot, and a constriction ring on the left lower leg. The left fingers 2, 3, and 4 were attached to the placenta by a fibrous string. No internal anomaly was noted. In the other case, a male newborn was delivered at the 39th week of gestation and had an agenesis of the calvarium, a cleft lip with palate, an amputation of the right toe, and constriction rings on right fingers 3 and 4 and left finger 3. The placenta was attached to the left temporooccipital region of the head by a fibrous string. Also present was an atrial septum defect and a horseshoe kidney. Possible etiology is discussed in relation to the "amniogenic bands" hypotheses.

Modulation of luteinizing hormone(LH) release by clonidine and opioid peptides in castrated male rats.

The effect of clonidine, a central alpha-adrenergic agonist, on the suppression of LH release induced by beta-endorphin or FK33-824, an endogenous opioid peptide or its synthetic analog, was investigated in castrated male rats, with or without pretreatment with reserpine. Pulsatile LH secretion was inhibited by intravenous injection of FK33-824 (400 micrograms/kg), or intraventricular injection of beta-endorphin (5 micrograms). Without pretreatment with reserpine, intraperitoneal administration of clonidine (1 mg/kg) failed to reverse the inhibition of LH release induced by these peptides. However, with pretreatment with reserpine (10 mg/kg), clonidine abolished the inhibitory effect on LH secretion induced by these peptides in castrated male rats. These data indicate that, unlike the results in ovariectomized, steroid-primed rats, pretreatment with reserpine allows the alpha-adrenergic system to act more peripherally than the opioid neuronal system in a neuronal network-regulating LH release in castrated male rats.
