[Cooperation of proton therapy and chemotherapy].

Proton therapy was developed as one of the most promising radiation therapy techniques and it has shown remarkable improvement of the local cure rate of cancer lesions and decrease of late injury. However, cooperation with chemotherapy is to be considered as a reasonable way to further improve the radical cure rate, because the indication of proton therapy is limited to a single primary lesion. Thereupon, combined chemotherapy before or after completion of the proton therapy of the primary lesion to control latent metastases of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, to control multicentric lesions of liver cancer, urinary bladder cancer, or to diminish the size of the lesions with too much volume, could well contribute to improved clinical results.

[Proton beam therapy of cancer in deep-seated organs].

Radiation therapy has shown definite technical improvement due to application of proton beam irradiation. Clinical results of proton beam therapy also suggested enlargement of indication ranges in radial treatment and decrease of post radiation damages of the treatment of cancers in deep-seated organs. Improvement of result in cancer therapy could be expected by this treatment technique in the future.

[Oncogenes and differential diagnosis among non-neoplastic, precancerous lesions and early and advances cancers].

Reviewing recent publications, especially on ras and myc expression in GI tract tumors, the usefulness of detecting oncogene changes for differential diagnosis among non-neoplastic changes, precancerous lesions, early and advanced cancers were discussed. While quantitative change of oncogene expression per se appears to have only limited value, qualitative alteration in oncogenes or in regulatory mechanisms of oncogene expression seems to offer more promising perspective for judging the biological character of individual lesions. The definition of precancerous lesion and early carcinoma is also carefully discussed.

[Histopathological changes in the brain after radiotherapy of brain metastasis].

This is the histopathological analysis of 18 post-irradiated brains with metastases of breast cancers. There was no evidence of radiation necrosis, except for one with demyelinization and one with degeneration of nerve cells. There was no radiation damage in re-irradiated group. Whole brain irradiation of about 40 Gy may be safe, but that of 60 Gy or more may be not so safe. It may be more useful for preventing of radiation damage to take split-course-method or shrinking-technique at doses of 40 Gy or more. The combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy seems to aggravate the course of radiation damage.

[Investigation of marking procedure for markers in deep-seated organs by proton beam therapy].

To obtain, an accurate outline of a tumor lesion in deep-seated organs with X-ray images in proton therapy, an implantation procedure of markers to determine the margins of the lesion has been developed. Nonradioactive Au grains were used as the markers and produced sufficiently clear images. The procedure consists of implanting the markers with a specially designed injector for endoscopic, palpative and intraoperative approaches to the lesions, which was performed without any adverse effects. Due to application of this procedure, the accuracy of treatment planning and pinpointing the site of the treatment field has improved greatly.

Establishment and characterization of a chicken hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, LMH.

A hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, LMH, has been established from a hepatocellular carcinoma induced in a male leghorn chicken by diethylnitrosamine. The cell line is characterized by well-differentiated morphological and biochemical features including the expression of glucose-6-phosphatase and canalicular ATPase activities and triploid karyotype with six marker chromosomes. The cells have been continuously propagated in culture for 5 yr and are now at about the 120th passage. Morphological change occurred in culture associated with gradual increase in growth rate at about the 40th passage. However, the biochemical and chromosomal features remained constant. This is the first established domestic fowl epithelial cell line and will allow comparative investigation of a number of parameters relevant to chicken hepatocarcinogenesis.
