The PVC-g-MnG polymers were synthesized by photo-induced graft copolymerization of methoxypoly (ethyleneoxide)monomethacrylate (MnG) with various chain lengths (n) of polyethyleneoxide (PEO) (n = 4, 9, 15, 23, 50, 100) as side chains to polyvinylchloride (PVC) with photo-sensitive dithiocarbamate groups. Antithrombogenicity has been evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro and in vivo results indicated that the adsorption of blood elements to the PVC-g-MnG significantly decreased with the increasing PEO chain length (n). From these findings it is suggested that the volume restriction effect resulted from the formation of long-chain PEO on the surface and which effectively suppresses the adsorption of blood elements and prevents the denaturation of blood elements.

Immunoglobulin-bearing peripheral blood lymphocytes were examined in 20 children with Kawasaki disease and in 13 healthy control children. Routine laboratory tests were also performed. IgG-bearing lymphocytes, IgA-bearing lymphocytes, and IgM-bearing lymphocytes increased in children with Kawasaki disease when compared with those of controls. Measurement of immunoglobulin-bearing cells in peripheral blood may be used as a clinical test in the diagnosis of Kawasaki disease.

A free vascularized fibular graft was used to treat a case of congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia in a 5-year-old girl. Four weeks after the surgery, x-ray films revealed remarkable callus formation at the proximal junction of the graft and tibia. Seventeen months passed before union at this junction was completed. Union at the distal junction, on the other hand, took only 12 weeks. It was noted that the fibular graft enlarged in diameter rapidly, and at 17 months was the same size as the recipient tibia.

A rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric assay for free fatty acids using acyl-CoA synthetase and acyl-CoA oxidase is described. It is sensitive to as low as 5 nmol of free fatty acids, and the standard curve is linear up to 100 nmol. The assay consists of the measurement of H2O2 produced from free fatty acids by acyl-CoA synthetase and acyl-CoA oxidase. The quantity of H2O2 is determined by the absorbance at 550 nm in the presence of catalase and 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AHMT). This method shows a broad specificity to long-chain fatty acids and the recoveries of added fatty acids (C12-C18) are more than 90%. The presence or absence of serum components or Escherichia coli cell-free extracts has no significant effect on the recovery of added palmitic acid.
Methylguanidine concentration in blood cell of nondialysed patients with chronic renal failure was quantitatively determined by the method of the present authors. We also determined tissue methylguanidine concentrations in the liver, blood cell, kidney, colon, muscle and brain of uremic rat experimentally produced by Platt's method. Methylguanidine concentrations in blood cell and tissues except the brain of the uremic rats and in blood cell of the uremic patients were 5--7 times higher than those in their serums. An increased methylguanidine concentration in the liver of the uremic rat receiving 40% protein diet was observed. These results imply that methylguanidine acts as one of the important uremic toxins in the intracellular space except for the brain, and suggest that the liver specifically affects the formation of methylguanidine.
Some fractions extracted from ginseng radix (HAKUSAN) caused hypoglycemic effect on alloxan diabetic mice. The effect was abolished by the i.v. injection of antisera against bovine insulin. The same doses of the ginseng fraction (10--50 mg/kg) produced an increase in the blood insulin level in alloxan diabetic mice. Normal mice loaded i.p. with glucose (2 g/kg or more) showed also such an increase. Insulin release from perfused rat pancreases was stimulated by the ginseng fraction (0.2 mg/ml), but the potency was not stronger than that of the sulfonylureas. It was demonstrated that glucose-induced insulin release was marked in the presence of the ginseng fraction. Impaired insulin responses to glucose in alloxan diabetic rats were increased by the fraction (0.5 mg/ml) to or above the control responses in normal rats. The enhanced effect was observed also in the presence of 100 microgram/ml cycloheximide. These results indicate that some ginseng fractions stimulated insulin release, especially glucose-induced insulin release from pancreatic islets and thereby lowered the blood glucose level.

Nondestructive neutron activation analysis was performed on the nickel purified by floating zone-refining and anion exchange. It is found that floating zone-refining in vacuum is effective to remove Na, Sc, Cr, Zn, As, Ag, Sb and Hg through vaporization in addition to elimination of Se, Sb, Ta, Sm and Tb through segregation. Anion exchange method is also effective to separate Fe, Co, Zn, Mo, Hg, Th and U usually contained in the commercial nickel sources. It is concluded that combination of these two purification methods is required to obtain high purity nickel, since floating zone-refining is known ineffective to eliminate Fe and Co, main impurities in commercial nickel sources.
