[Comparison of cast and metal-ceramic veneer crowns; results of a follow-up study in wearers of partial prostheses].

The results of follow-up examinations of 635 gold cast and 359 metal ceramic veneer crowns inserted primarily for caries prophylaxis and static reasons in patients with partial dentures on the average 4 1/2 years ago are reported. All crowns fulfilled their caries-preventing functions well. More than 93% were free of secondary caries, this was especially so when the crown margin was still below the gingiva. The conditions at the crown margins were studied. It was found that margin seal, type of crown as well as interdependent variables like age, periodontal condition and personal oral hygiene had a significant influence on whether the crown margin was still in the gingival sulcus. Metal ceramic veneer crowns were vestibularly exposed more frequently than cast crowns. The reason for this was found to be defective construction. The study showed further that lesions at the baked veneer crown occurred more often than had been expected so far. It is estimated that they amount to 3% with widely used ceramic crowns.

[Results of follow-up studies on support methods for partial dentures].

Prosthetic provision with removable part-replacement was divided into 7 groups according to the type of support and the prognosis was established on the basis of caries activity and several criteria of the periodontal condition, separated according to anchoring or supporting teeth as well as the remaining teeth. Generally regressive changes must be expected which become more marked with reduction in the number of teeth and support possibilities.

Dental Abutments↗

[Testing of knowledge in the field of prosthetics].

At four dental schools of the Federal Republic of Germany, a joint test concerning knowledge in the field of prosthetics was carried out with 222 students and staff participating. Evaluation of the 76 multiple-choice questions showed that, on the whole, there are only small differences in knowledge from dental school. The questions permit a good differentiation between well and poorly informed participants.

Educational Measurement↗

[The effect of the density, porosity and surface properties of plastic bases of upper dentures on the palatal mucosa].

In a 14-day test with 50 probands, the effects of a heat-curing resin and a self-curing resin on the palatal mucosa of the test persons were tested by means of exfoliative cytology. It was shown that the keratinization index increased considerably during wearing the plates. It was not possible to demonstrate differences in the effect of heat-curing resins and that of self-curing resins. The different isolation with alginate film or tinfoil did not, in general, have any influence on the cytogram either. Roughness of the surface resulted in a slight increase of the intermediary cells.

Acrylic Resins↗

[Gingival hyperplasia in bar joint prostheses].

The occurrence of mucosal hyperplasias under 57 bars (according to Dolder) was examined. It was found that apart from the time factor, cleaning habits of the patient and the construction of the dentures played an important role. Short bars are more difficult to clean than those with wide distances between the abutments. The influence of additional factors can only be demonstrated in combination with other factors, this suggests rather complex connections.

Denture Design↗

[A data storage system in computer dialog for dental prosthetics].

It is reported on a data processing system with computer dialogue for the "standardized sheet of findings". The computer-readable form, improved error control, and optimum evaluation possibilities are emphasized as special advantages. Simple handling and optimum data protection permit to have this system operated by trained laymen.
