Correlation between CA19-9 production in vitro and histological grades of differentiation in vivo in clones isolated from a human pancreatic cancer cell line (SUIT-2).

The production of carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) were investigated in 28 clones isolated from a human pancreatic cancer cell line (SUIT-2) and related to in vitro morphology of the clones and in vivo tumorigenicity. Clones of fusiform and polygonal cells could be morphologically distinguished in confluent cultures. There was no significant difference in CEA production between fusiform-cell clones (2.10 +/- 2.70 ng/L x 10(6) per 24 h) and polygonal-cell clones (6.01 +/- 7.30 ng/L x 10(6) per 24 h), but polygonal-cell clones had higher production of CA19-9 (1176.1 +/- 1628.4 U/L x 10(6) per 24 h) than fusiform (6.0 +/- 7.3 U/L x 10(6) per 24 h; P < 0.01). Production of CA19-9 in vitro correlated with the histological grade of differentiation in vivo in nude mice (r = 0.73, P < 0.001), but CEA production did not. The polygonal-cell clones developed well-differentiated carcinomas in vivo and produced significantly more CA19-9 (P < 0.001) than fusiform-cell clones, which generally developed into poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinomas in vivo. This cell line may provide an appropriate system for further studies of the biology and therapy of pancreatic cancer.

Homing receptor expression on cord blood T lymphocytes and the development of atopic eczema in infants.

Expression of the gut-homing receptor integrin alphaEbeta7, but not cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA), on milk allergen-stimulated cord blood T lymphocytes precedes the development of milk-induced eczema in early infancy. The data indicate the involvement of integrin alphaEbeta7 in the development of infantile allergic eczema and provide a clue to the avoidance of specific allergens and novel therapy targeting homing receptors in food allergy.

Acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas with elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein.

A case of acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas with elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is presented. The diagnosis was reached using histopathological techniques. AFP was positive in the tumor specimen, immunohistochemically. Serum AFP had fallen temporarily after surgery and chemotherapy. The patient survived 6.5 months after the onset of symptoms.

[Long-term follow-up in patients receiving anticoagulation therapy: potency of therapy and complications].

Many clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of oral anticoagulation for the primary and secondary prevention of venous thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, systemic embolism and stroke. However, the relationship between potency and/or changes in anticoagulation therapy and frequency of complications is not clear. This study retrospectively investigated 157 patients (valvular heart disease 37, artificial valve replacement 19, atrial fibrillation 11, ischemic heart disease 55, post coronary artery bypass grafting 25, others 10: mean age 55 +/- 12 years) who received oral anticoagulation therapy for 4.9 +/- 3.2 years to investigate the development of complications. The thrombotest and prothrombin time were measured at follow-up examinations every month (mean interval 31 days). Target range of anticoagulation was 2.5 to 3.5 (international normalized ratio: INR). During the 770 patient-years of follow-up, seven major bleedings (cerebral, renal, gastrointestinal, etc.), 111 minor bleedings (subcutaneal, nasal, gum, etc. bleeding), 16 major thromboembolisms (cerebral, renal, etc. infarction) and 4 minor thromboembolisms (transient ischemic attack) were observed. INR at the onset of the complications was 2.93 +/- 0.41 in patients with bleeding and 1.81 +/- 0.46 in those with thromboembolism. INR was greater than 2.75 in all patients with major hemorrhage and less than 2.75 in those with major thromboembolism. Seventy-five percent of bleeding complications developed at the increasing phase of INR and 70% of thromboembolism at the decreasing phase. Cumulative rates free from bleeding complications with a mean INR of < or = 2.0, 2.0-2.5 and > 2.5 were 76.8, 62.8 and 45.5%, respectively, at 5 years.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Multicenter experience with maxillary prostheses supported by Brånemark implants: a clinical report.

This retrospective study involved Japanese patients with prostheses supported by Brånemark implants following maxillectomy. Questionnaires were sent to 75 institutions, and data on 19 patients were collected from 8 institutions. The mean age of patients at the time of implant placement was 64.2 years (range 22 to 82 years). The mean follow-up time was 27.6 months. Of the 81 implants placed, 16 were lost for an implant survival rate of 80.2%. The effects on implant survival rate of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and the support system of the prosthesis were analyzed, but no significant differences were observed.

Measurement of maxillary sinus volume using computerized tomographic images.

This study measured maxillary sinus volume as an aid in determining the volume of graft bone needed before grafting autogenous bone to the maxillary sinus floor. Maxillary sinus volumes were measured from computerized tomographic images of 38 sinuses using a 3-dimensional reconstruction system. When the sinus-lift procedure was simulated, volumes (mean +/- SD) of the inferior portion of the sinuses were 4.02 +/- 1.44 cm3 for 15-mm lifting and 6.19 +/- 1.77 cm3 for 20-mm lifting. In bone grafting of the maxillary sinus floor, taking into consideration individual differences in maxillary sinus volume and resorption of the grafted bone, 5.46 cm3 or more were required for a 15-mm lift and 7.96 cm3 or more were required for a 20-mm lift.
